Like everything, this depends on your definition.

Milk is an animal product, as are eggs. So both are NOT vegan. But vegetarian? There are different types of vegetarian. lacto-vegetarians drink milk and milk products, but not egg. ovo-vegetarians eat egg, but not milk. lacto-ovo-vegetarians eat milk products and eggs. Vegans eat neither.

So it's really your choice. Unfortunately, there is no set rule that specifies milk or eggs and defines them as one or the other.

yeah.. diet and how your go about it is really up to you, different circumstances and backgrounds require different standards. But you would be surprised at what how many products you use everyday have/or been processed with animal products.

With an Amritdhari it depends which ceremony (Parchar) you had when taking Amrit. For example, some of my cousins who have taken Amrit, there was no mention of vegetarianism and they are not vegetarians in any sense. Wheras others who have taken it they are strict on no eggs meat and fish.

On a side note I have a lunatic sister in law who is a vegetarian, yet she still eats fish....because she claims fish is vegetarian.........now that is pretty stupid.....even in the eyes of a Sikh non vegetarian like me...... LOL.gif

Well the gurus had no problem with milk. Although it comes from an animal (at the time) animals were not put into pain or killed to obtain this. Technically, eggs could be seen to be a life (if fertilized) and so that is a good argument on not eating them.

However, the choice is yours as to weither the original assumptions apply today. The milk we drink now, and the eggs we eat now are different than the ones that were present during our gurus' time. Some organizations show that the way milk is obtained is very unconfortable for the cows (tight places, indoors at all times, fed cr@p from other dead cows, painful milking with machines). At the same time eggs (mostly) are unfertilized, and so it could be argued that now no life exists within them and are like any other animal product. (but then again, chickens are also mistreated...)

So the choice is really left to each one of us, to see what we are willing to take or eat or not. The basic rule that we should not kill other animals for our food should still apply, but we must all see when these rules apply in our foods today.

'Type of Amrit ceremony' aside, it's actually quite simple.

Eggs have the potential to become a living creature, while milk does not. Obviously if you are a vegetarian, the former is forbidden and the latter is alright. If you are not a vegetarian, it doesn't matter either way. Above and beyond that, considering humane methods and the like, you shouldn't drink milk because of the way it is obtained. Like all of the above posts it's ultimately 'your choice', but eggs are not vegetarian, while milk is.

Animal products are put and processed with so many things today.. jsut leave thsi up to the individual to decide.
