Temple disorder leader sentenced

A man who led a disturbance at a Diwali celebration has been fined £7,500 and put on probation for two years.

Jasvinder Singh Uhbi, 48, of Court House Green, Coventry, was charged with violent disorder after a fracas at the Sikh temple in Leamington Spa in 2005.

Coventry Crown Court heard more than 50 people stormed the temple and attacked some of the elders believing alcohol was being drunk inside.

Uhbi was also sentenced to do 200 hours community service.

He has already spent two months in custody after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing.

The court heard that a group stormed the temple on 12 November, 2005 and attacked people inside.

They threw chairs and tables, and men had their beards pulled and their turbans removed before the turbans were doused in alcohol.

Vaheguroo Jee Kaa Khalsa Vaheguroo Jee Kee Fateh

The Gurdwara Committee of Leamington & Warwick were organising monthly alcohol drinking sessions within the Gurdwara. On 12th November 2005, the Gurdwara Committee were caught red handed. There was no mistake as to alcohol and meat behind inside the Gurdwara and pictures taken at the time show this:

I accept the verdict of the courts that have passed sentences, however no one can dismiss the fact that the Committee abused its powers and Gurdwara Rehit Maryada.

The Party Room, which was later labelled as a Elderly Day Centre, is part of the Gurdwara Complex. The room itself had a sign on the door prohibiting Meat and Alcohol. This shows the attitude of the Gurdwara Committee who thought it was hilarious to put this sign up and conduct drinking sessions within the same room.

Leamington Sangat rebelled on the 20th November 2005 when they confronted the Gurdwara Committee to stop these drinking sessions in the Gurdwara after the incident. Many within the Sangat had complained time and time again to stop these drinking sessions however the Gurdwara Committee continued to ignore the problems. Things would never have got so out of hand if the Gurdwara Committee acted responsibly and put Gurdwara Maryada first. They chose to ignore the Sangat and disrespect the sanctuary of the Gurdwara.

The Singhs and Singhnias who came to stop this beadbi know what the saw that evening. One thing is for sure, the Singhs and Singhnias who came to stop this beadbi had no political motive to take over the Gurdwara. Only a Sikh will understand the pain of beadbi to Guru Maharaj and a Gurughar.

The aftermath has been dealt with by the Police and the Courts, but the real issue cannot be hidden under all these happenings.

Alcohol is a big no no for Sikhs.

Meat at the Gurudwara again a big no no.

However, the conduct of people like Ubhi and co, is a big no no TOO!

Vote them out. Use democratic means. ........to resort to violence and beat up old men is out of order.

Why can't these brave Singh's stand up to outsider's when they make fun of their turban's, and attack them? Then they run like cowards.

If you do not have communication with the family, please email covkhalsa@gmail.com or the R4G campaign email address so that they can pass on details on to the family.

Bhai Sahib and his family have been through hard times over the past year and its kirpa maharaj has sorted it, hopefully we can all take an example from him and stand up when beadbi is happening.

Please may each person do ardaas and chaupi sahibs for the chardi kala of the panth now as you have seen the state of sikhi!! The pictures have shown it all!!!! Let us come together and bring Sikhi BACK to the way it was before the western culture took over

thanks for your comments......

i cant talk for anyone else...i aint saying what happened on the day was right or wrong....but there was a big issue and it caused a big reaction...reactions aint always what we want them to be.....it would be ideal if the masands were voted out....what was and still is annoying & demoralising is that none of these panthic jathebhandia came forward to resolve the problem....where where our political elders when we really needed them......at the end of the day ubhi was the fall guy, the person the masands wanted to blame...but the real issue still remains

Many lessons have been learnt. Everyone went to stop beadbi, not vote the committee out. The court have sentenced Ubhi. End of story. But its up to the Sangat to sentence the committee for their actions. No UK court of law will do this.

The power lies in the Sadh Sangat. When the Sikh Sangat realise their responsibility to their Guru, then half the battle is won. It is always disheartening to see that the beadbi of Sikh marayada is almost mainly carried out by "Sikh" elders.

Pathetic excuses to justify the need to serve alcohol and meat in a Gurdwara Sahib complex seem to now be abundant. Masand committees will (they may already be) allow their constitution to permit alcohol and meat on the Gurdwara premises in order to fulfil their social requirements.

All historical Sikh movements came about for one purpose only and that was to maintain the sanctity of Sikh maryada. For this reason we have been blessed with countless shaheeds and GurSikhs who have given kurbania for their Guru Ghars. Bhai Jasvinder Singh Ubhi and his family are a prime example of the passion of Sikhi which needs reawakening in our kaum.

"Jina Singha Singhniya Ne Thurum Heth Sees Dithe Buynd Bund Kutai Khopriya Luhayiya Chrukriya Te Churiye Aria Naal Churie Ge, Gurdwaraiya Di Secva Layee Kurbaniya Keethiya Turum Nehi Hariye Sikhi Kesaa Swasaa Naal Nibahi Thina Di Kumai Da Thiyan Tur Ke Bolo Ji Waheguru

Think of and remember the unique service rendered by those brave Sikh men as well as women, who sacrificed their heads but did not surrender their Sikh Religion; Who got themselves cut to pieces from each of the joints of the body; Who got their scalps removed; Who were tied and rotated on the wheels and broken into pieces; Who were cut by saws; Who were flayed alive; Who sacrificed themselves to upkeep the dignity of the Gurdwaras; Who did not abandon their Sikh faith; Who kept their Sikh Religion and saved their long hair till their last breath; Utter Wahe Guru (Wondrous God)
