it's fun thread ;) (i know rochak and his mates are feeling all :( garam) jk

maja = people who lives in and around Amritsar district and gurdaspur district

Malwa = People who lives in and around Bhatinda dist. and below the amritsar

Doaba = chandigarh peeps (?)

I don't want to contribute to the ongoing tussle of which area of Punjab is best than the others but just wanted to put a few facts.

1. Majha is Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts

2. Doaba is Kapurthala, Jullundur, Nawan Shahr and Hoshiarpur districts

3. Malwa is rest of Punjab. Chandigarh is not in Punjab but a separate union territory but the area on which it was built was a part of Malwa.

Malwa is 65.22 % of the total area of Punjab. It is double the area of Doaba and Majha combined and has 11 of 17 districts of Punjab. Ludhiana the only 1 million plus city in Punjab is in Malwa. The largest grain market in India is at Khanna also in Malwa. Barring the Hindu dominated towns, Malwa votes solidly for the Panthic parties like the Akalis. Sikhs form 68 % of the tota

l population of Malwa but only 64 % in Majha and 44 % in Doaba. Areas of Malwa such as Patiala, Nabha and Faridkot had the longest period of rule by Sikh rulers than any other area.

Google can deliver a lot of census data, the question is can it be considered valid. The CIA 2003 World factbook says that Singapore's population is 4,608,595 from a July 2003 estimate, however <http://www.embassyofindia.com/sg_society.htm> states that "Today, Singapore’s population (including permanent residents) is 3.16 million" and of them - "7 percent Sikh"(it's outdated) [also should be 0.7 percent]

(1983): "Sikhs also moved to Malaysia. Today as many as 50,000 Sikhs live in the western part and to the south, in the city-country of Singapore, there are an estimated 20,000 more Sikhs."

(1997): "... The present Sikh population of Malaysia is reckoned to stand at around 40,000-50,000, forming about three per cent of the total Indian community in the nation's population. "
