i read in a book once that sant isher singh used to be against putting money in the gholak. he used to say bring flowers or something that will make guru's darbaar look nice or food for langar. i guess that might have been to stop dodgy commitees though grin.gif ill have to read the book again i suppose to confirm it though :)

I think it would make more sense to make contributions to the gurdwara somewhere else (such as by the entry of the prayer hall) instead in front of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Can someone please explain why I am wrong?

Ik ong kar satgur parsad!

I feel there is no difference. On the contrary.. let us look at it this ways :

We put in our contribution and then do Matha Tehk.. only goes to make our contribution humble and nothing bad about learning humility..

Bhul chuk maaf karni ji!

I Fink we making a big issue out of Nothing. Its not even an issue..

Whats the problem if you're bowing to Guru Ji and a golak is between you.. its not exactly stopping your soul bowing down to Guru Ji - Thats YOU. Not The Golak!

I agree that giving money inside the darbar hall can be a distraction
You know.. *anything* can be a distraction if you want it to be rolleyes.gif
Because the full focus should be on praying and showing respect to the Guru Granth Sahib, not on giving money to the gurdwara as well

Again, that's the individual's problem rather than Sangat's problem. If you focus more on moeny than Guru Ji then that's your fault. It's like saying "Lets banish giving out Parshaad because it makes people focus more on that than Guru ji"..

Gurfateh!!

I was just reading the other thread about if Guru Ji was here in human form, and i was thinking if Guru Ji was then would you seriously go to your Guru empty handed? Would you not take something to offer. Even if it is 1 penny. We spend so much on ourselves it's not just about giving 10% give more when you can and if you can, we don't really need all the money we have. Our Guru has given us everything, shelter and food and so much more.

If the golak was outside somewhere how many people would just walk past it, i have seen golaks outside halls and people don't even look twice. When you matha tekh there is plenty of stuff infront of you so why you would feel as though your bowing to money i don't know. We need to be able to focus on Akaal Purukh at all times.

Please also remember Gurdwareh need money to run, don't think that all committees eat all the money because they don't. Gurdwareh have bills, and i have seen some hefty council tax bills for Gurdwareh.

Muslims have to give 2.5%

The Compulsory Charity (Zakah)

In Islam, the true owner of everything is God, not man. People are given wealth as a trust from God. Zakah is worship and thanksgiving to God by supporting the poor, and through it one’s wealth is purified.. It requires an annual contribution of 2.5 percent of an individual’s wealth and assets. Therefore, Zakah is not mere “charity”, it is an obligation on those who have received their wealth from God to meet the needs of less fortunate members of the community. Zakah is used to support the poor, orphans, and widows, help those in debt, and, in olden times, to free slaves. (source: http://www.islamreligion.com/articles/3/)

no i didnt say it feels like your bowing to money but I just don't like the idea of including money which is a worldy material thing because at the gurdwara I like to think of a heavenly place without a need of money. and money to me more represents the fake world buuut its true there are a lot worse distractions that go on at gurdwaras too like the "show offs" in the sangat.

well it was just a thought that maybe the golak could be moved and still be as noticed and function (maybe even more if theres eyecatching posters explaining lil facts about how much the money helps)

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
