Guest Narinder Singh
please let us not make this into an issue, this post is about the sri jap ji sahib. if you want to start a new thread on the differnet schools of thought then please do so. I know veer Narinder SIngh said that he follows the choice of the panth to read the mool mantar to Gurparsaad. I will have to say that this is not an agreed move.

This Akal Takhat will not make a decision on the issue of the Mool Mantar like wise the Raag Mala and Meat due to not wanting to split the faith. personally i can see their arguements for not making a decision.

All i would say is Gurparsaad or Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach that is not the big issue, the issue is if one is repeating the name of the Lord then dont stop them.

I will post the translations of the mool mantar accoring to the Damdami and Sato Gali taksal soon in english

Meat and Mool Mantar has been decided, all that is mentioned in the Rehit Maryada, so i advise you read it before saying "Akal Takht will not make a decision".

I did not want to make it an issue either, however i wish people would respect that Maryada of the Guru Panth which is equal to Guru Granth.

Fateh.

Translation 2

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji were helping humanity and while on their travels went to the sacred site known as Mount Sumer. When they got there they found 48 Sidhs along with their leader known by the name of Gorakh Nath. The Sidhs asked Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, “What power brings you here?”

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji said, “O Sidhs, I have come here with the strength of the almighty Lord who is known as <>.”

The Sidhs then replied, “According to the Vedas the name of God is given as Aum. Why have you said and used <> instead?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji answered the question posed to him. He said, “The word Aum stands for the trinity. It represents the virtues of passion, truth and darkness. These are the attributes of Maya who is the illusion. Due to this we have created the term <>. In the beginning to the incantation is the numeral one which shows that God is unique and has no duality. We have written this due to there being 63 different terms for Onkar, which cause controversy in Hinduism. There are three different forms of god given each with the form of the trinity, which becomes 9. There are 7 different knowledgeable people who have each given 9 forms. This makes it the total of 63 (9 X 7). These forms are shown below.

1) The first theory is called the Hirangarb, which is created by the demi god known as Brahma. This is also the theory accepted by the Patanjali order of people. The names and forms they use for God are – Trimatra Roop, Tribrahm Roop and Triakhar Roop. (Tri stands for the number 3 showing the trinity)

2) The creator of the Sankh Shastar who is called Kapal Muni says the names and forms of God are – Trigian Roop, Trigun Roop and Trikaran Roop.

3) Apatar Muni says that the names and forms of God are – Trimukh Roop, Tridevta Roop and Triparyojan Roop.

4) The order of Sanat Kumar who was one of the sons of the demi god Brahma states that the names and forms of God are – Trikaal Roop, Triling Roop and Trisangya Roop.

5) The order of Brahmnishta state that the names and forms of God are – Tristhan Roop, Tripad Roop and Tripragya Roop.

6) The order of Shiva state that the names and forms of God are – Trai Avastha Roop, Trai Bhog Roop and Trai Bhogta Roop.

7) The order of Baishnav and Narad Muni state that the names and forms of God are – Triaatma Roop, Trisubhav Roop and Tribyooh Roop.

In this way from the 7 different orders we have 63 different definitions for Onkar. Showing that there was duality.

The Christians believe God to be in three different forms and these are the Holy Spirit, God who is the father and the prophet Jesus who is the son

The Muslims believe God to be in two different forms, which are God and the prophet.

In order to get rid of all of these discrepancies and to show that God is unique the numeral one was added in front of the incantation. In order to end the dispute the numeral was added to show that there is no duality and there is no other similar to the divine Lord. We only eulogise about the one God, we only pronounce the name of the one Lord, we only are devoted to the one Lord, we are the devotee of the one Lord and God makes all of the people the devotees of the one Lord.

In our faith the form of God is one and unique. In the Vedas God also is unique and has no duality. For this reason the Name <>does not differ from the authority of the Vedas.

Onkar can be split into two separate parts when trying to find its meaning. The first part of it is Aum and the second is Kar. Aum can be split up into three different letters which are A, U and M. The three letters represent the words of Akar, Ukar and Makar. The word Akar represents the demi god known as Brahma. The word Ukar represents the demi god known as Vishnu. The word Makar represents the demi god known as Vishnu. According to the faith of Hinduism it states that these three demi gods are considered the most sacred and they are the ones responsible for the welfare of creation. The demi god Brahma is known as the creator, the demi god Vishnu is known as the provider or sustainer and the demi god Shiva is known as the destroyer. This shows that Aum represents the sacred Hindu trinity. The Kar represents the non-transcendent Lord God who has no end. The Kar is placed on top of the Aum. This represents that the sacred Hindu trinity of demi gods gain all of their powers from the greater being who we refer to as God.”

The Sidhs heard this and asked, “ Please True King with your grace please tell us in this ambrosial incantation why have you written the numeral one in front of Onkar? In the Vedas there is no numeral in front so why did you do this?”

Hearing this Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji answered their question saying, “ Our faith is for everyone and all of humanity. The incantation Aum in the Vedas is only for the Brahman social class of people as they can both listen to it and recite it. The social class of the Kashatris can listen to the word Aum but cannot recite it. The social classes of Shudras and Vais cannot listen to or recite the incantation. All of the women from all four of the social classes cannot listen to or recite the incantation of Aum. By putting the numeral of one in front of the incantation of Onkar we show that God has no duality and Ik Onkar can be read and recited by any one from any background. Those people who say the incantation of <>will be saved.

For this reason we have created this incantation for all of the people of the world. Just as a cloud showers all the people with rain, in the same way the name of God is showering all of the people of the world with his grace and love regardless of race, gender, colour, creed, social class, etc. Unlike the Aum incantation everyone has the right to recite this incantation.”

<>

Ik Onkar

Ik = one, unique, Onkar = the name of God

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to fully explain the incantation starting with the numeral 1.

The numeral 1 stands for a being that is unique and has no other similar to them.

God is considered to be Sujati. This means God is the only one of his species and you can find no other like him. Unlike with any other species you can find them in numbers of more then one such as human beings. According to science there are over 6 billion humans in the world showing that an individual human is not Sujati as there are over 6 billion similar to them but God has no other remotely similar to them.

God is Vijati. This means that God has no other species similar to him such as humans have other mammal groups, which are similar to them. According to science and the evolution theories of Darwinism and Lamarksism state that the primate family of apes is similar to that of humans and the human beings are their descendants. In this way there is no similar species to God.

God is Svaigat. God was born from himself and does not have any limbs or attachments. A tree is born from a seed and has branches and flowers or fruit. A human is born from another human and has limbs such as arms and legs. Other creatures such as chickens are born from eggs. Animals such head lice are born from heat. God is unlike these species and was not born through the means of the womb, the egg, a seed or from heat. God was born from themselves and is the form of self-illumination.

In this way God is Sujati, Vijati and Svaigat.

God has no Des. God does not have his own land, which can be named. God does not reside in a specific land but everywhere at once. The Hindus consider God to reside in the east and face the rising sun when meditating. The Muslims consider God to reside in Mecca and face this direction when praying. The Christians and Jews consider God to reside along in the seventh level of Heaven. However God resides in all of these places all at once. God is present in all the lands as Guru Nanak Dev Ji showed in Mecca when the Kabba moved in the direction that their holy feet were turned in. They showed all the Muslims that God resides everywhere and does not have to be meditated to in a certain direction and cannot be confined to a single land.

God has no Kal. At some point every being was born either during the day or night. God does not die due to this neither does his birth take place. His form is immortal. Due to this God is considered as timeless and cannot be placed into the concept of time, which is a man made concept.

God is exempt from death and cannot be destroyed, his form is timeless. God can see all of creation and due to death it is created and then later perishes. Due to God not taking birth from another other them him he is exempt from the inevitable death, which all others face.

Only God alone is exempt from death.

God has no Vastoo. A being has three kinds of states. Vishav is considered the first state of a person. This is where the being is awake in the world. Taijasav is the second state of a person. In this state is when a person is asleep but is still dreaming. Pragya is the state third state of a person. In this state a person is considered to be in a dreamless state of their sleep.

When God mixes will the illusion of Maya the Hindu faith states that there are three kinds of states.

These are Vairat, Hirangarb and Abiakrit.

Vairat – This is the state where a God mixes with the illusion. This is the awakened state. The form of this state is made up of all of creation.

The head is made up of the seven heavens, the feet are made up of seven underworlds, the sun and the moon make up the eyes, mouth made from fire, the heart made of Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma make the two arms, oceans make the stomach, the rivers make the veins, the mountains make the bones, body hair made up of the vegetation, religion and sin making up the rest of the body. This is the form of the awakened state.

This is the form that Sri Krishna showed his devotee Arjan on the battlefield of Kurakshetra prior to the commencement of the great battle of the Mahabharat.

Hirangarb – This is the state when God is in the sleep state where they dream.

Abiakrit – This is the state when God is in a dreamless state of sleep.

Due to the illusion known as Maya these three states are known.

God however does not have any of these states. These states have only been created due to ignorance of people. God is unique and has no duality. Due to this God does not have different states and does not have any need to rest or sleep.

Due to God being Sujati, Vijati and Svaigat, also God having no Des, Kal and Vastoo he is one. This is the reason for placing the numeral 1 in front of Onkar.

Onkar is the word that God said in order to cause the creation of the universe according to the Vedas and Sikhism. Although the Islamic belief is that the word said was Kun rather then Onkar.

Onkar is the conventional and traditional incantation.

1) The Sanketa translation of Onkar is that God through the spiritual master gives one knowledge and illumination.

2) The Viakaaran translation of Onkar is that God is the protector of all and the root of all.

3) The Jogak translation of Onkar is that God is the one who take the air and vital life force into the tenth gate where when gains divine knowledge.

4) The Saints translation and Vaisno faith translation of Onkar is that God is the one who gives offerings to his beloved devotees. The offerings can be anything that the devotee wishes for.

5) The translation of the symbol of Onkar is the following; Onkar can be split into two parts. The first is On and the second is Kar. The On is the same as Aum. This can be split into three parts which are A, U and M.

A - stands for Akar. This is attributed to the virtue of passion and represents the demi god called Brahma.

U – stands for Ukar. This is attributed to the virtue of truth and represents the demi god called Vishnu.

M – stands for Makar. This is attributed to the virtue of darkness and represents the demi god called Shiva.

The Kar, which is the line, represents the Lord God. This is never ending and infinite like the Lord. This line when added to anything adds an infinite amount of fortune. This line also shows that the trinity are under the divine being and get their powers from God.

6) The Lai Chintan Se translation of Onkar is that it represents God’s different states.

The Ukar in Onkar represents the Vairat form, the awakened state of the Lord.

The Akar in Onkar represents the Hirangarb form, the sleeping state of the Lord.

The Makar in Onkar represents the Abiakrit form, the dreamless state of the Lord.

God takes the awake being into his Vairat form, the sleeping being into his Hirangarb form and the being in the dreamless state into the Abiakrit form. This way the being can always be with the Lord.

The Kar shows that God is correct and is the one who gives knowledge to all beings.

7) The name of God Onkar by reciting it takes a person from his feet to his forehead and makes them greater. Due to this name it makes a person rise in the social ranks.

8) The word Onkar is made up of two letters and is the root of all. The translation for this is that god is the nourisher and takes care of a being. The one who says this incantation is provided for and nourished for by God. Whatever material object a person wants, that is provided for him. God provides everything that a person does not have.

9) The word Onkar also stand for the divine Lord. Anyone who recites this incantation shall become the Lord themselves.

Translation 3

The Anbundak Meaning

The Sikhs said to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, “There are four obligating appendixes in each scripture that are necessary. Are these four in your incantation?”

Guru Gobind Singh Ji said that in each scripture there are these four obligating appendixes in each scripture and these can be found in the incantation. The four are as follows;

1) The Adhikari Anbund.

<>

Ik Onkar

Ik Onkar = form, invocation

This is the form of the auspicious Lord.

siqnwm

Satnam

Satnam = official start

This is the official opening of the scripture.

The Sikhs asked Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, “Who is entitled to read the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji?”

Guru Ji went on to answer the question, “The person who does not forget God in all eight parts of the day they are the worshippers and recite the incantation of siqnwm (satnam). They are entitled to read the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. They can then gain the understanding of the spiritual knowledge and religious pursuit. The four spiritual disciplines are Vairag, Vivek, Khat Sampati and Mokh Icha.

The characteristics of siqnwm are the following.

a) Vivek – God is the true form now, God was the true form before and in the future God will still be the true form. This is the wisdom of God. Vivek means wisdom.

The person who gains reasoning and wisdom of God then they also gain Vairag, Khat Sampati and Mokh Icha.

Which ever being gains the grace of their spiritual master and becomes the worshipper of the one true Lord gains the characteristics Vivek, Vairag, Khat Sampati and Mokh Icha.

b) Vairag – one leaves the material objects and everything on this earth in order to reach the heavens. This is a person who renounces the world. Vairag is renunciation.

c) Khat Sampati – This is made up of six disciplines, which are;

i) Sam - To control the mind

ii) Dam - To stop the lust for sexual pleasure

iii) Sardha - To have complete faith

iv) Samadhan - To keep a clear mind

v) Upram -To be disinterested in sexual pleasure

vi) Tatkhacha - To control a hunger

One is to endure pain and happiness as if they are the same. Khat Sampati are disciplines.

d) Mokh Icha – This is the yearning for salvation. This is when a person turns their back on all other things that makes them happy.

These four characteristics are the entitlements. The person who meditates on the one true Lord is a God willing devotee and is entitled to read the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Out of all of these disciplines the initial one is Vivek. Because of Vivek it invokes the state of Vairag, Vairag invokes Khat Sampati and Khat Sampati leads to Mokh Icha.

This is the Adhikari Anbund and is the official opening of the scripture.

2) The Vikhai Anbund.

A second question was asked, “What is the Thesis of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji? Until a person fully understands the thesis, topic or subject of the scripture one remains attaches to mundane worldly affairs.”

Guru Gobind Singh Ji answered, “krqw purKu (karta purkh) contains the thesis of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. When God (krqw) and the being (purKu) become one this is the true union and topic of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

krqw

Karta

Karta = human being

This stands for the being. If this being from his toe of his foot to his head is egotistical and believes that all of his actions are done to his own accord.

purKu

Purkh

Purkh = God

This stands for God. God who is exempt from the illusion known as Maya and provides and protects for all of creation.

When the being and God come together and become one, this is the doctrine and meaning of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and can be found in the root incantation.

This is the Vikhai Anbund of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

3) The Paryojan Anbund

The Sikhs then asked, “What is the supreme purpose of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji?”

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji said, “The supreme purpose of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is inrBau (no enmity) and inrvYru (no fear).

inrBau

Nirbhou

Nir = no, Bhou = fear

The fear of the birth and death should be eradicated.

inrvYru

Nir = no, Vair = emnity

The devotee of God should realise their enmity free soul and should be acquired.

The supreme bliss obtained by getting rid of a person’s pain is the supreme purpose.

For this reason inrvYru (nirvair) and inrBau (nirbhou) are the supreme purpose of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

4) The Sanbandan Anbund

These are the kinship and relationship purpose of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. These are Akwl mUriq (Akaal Moorat), AjUnI (Ajooni) and sYBM (Sai Bhang) are the kinship and relationship purposes of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

AjUnI (Ajooni) and sYBM (Sai Bhang) are the form of God. God is exempt from birth and death and with his name one gains knowledge.

The knowledge is the self illuminated scriptures of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and gives the full explanation of God.

Akwl mUriq

Akaal Moorat

Akaal = immortal, no death, Moorat = form

The form of God, which is exempt from death. This is the real form of God.

Through these three the kinship and relationship between a being and God is explained for the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and this can be found in the root incantation.

The Sikhs then asked, “What is the relationship between the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and knowledge?”

Guru Gobind Singh Ji replied, “ The Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is like a father to all beings. The name of God is like the son and the knowledge gained from it is the form of the son.

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji creates the knowledge and for this reason is the father. The knowledge created from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the form of the son.

The relationship of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and knowledge is of a father and son.

All other relationships are not as strong and close as this one.”

gurpRswid

Gurparsad

Gur = spiritual master, Parsad = grace

Out of all of these appendixes without the grace of the spiritual master nothing can be achieved. For this reason with all of the appendixes you need the grace of the spiritual master to gain knowledge.

Without the grace the right and authority cannot be gained.

In this way Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji explained the four obligating appendixes of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji out of the root incantation.

The Atee Biapatee Dosh Nivirat meaning.

The Sidhs asked Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, “O True King in this incantation that you have recited do you have the flaws of Abiapatee, Goravta and Atee Biapatee in it? From what we have heard we have not seen these flaws.”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji said, “This incantation is exempt from all flaws. When we created this incantation we made sure we eradicated all of the possible flaws.

The Atee Biapatee is where a creature or thing is its own specie but has similarities to another. For example you can find a cow with horns. There are other animals that also have horns such as bulls and rhinos.

The Sidhs then said, “ O true king we understand that <> (ik onkar) means that god is one, he has no duality and is the one who illuminates and gives knowledge to all. siq (sat) means that God is the form of truth. What was the reason for continuing the incantation further and adding nwmu (nam)? Would not it have been better to leave the incantation at this point and make it easier for your devotees?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji replied

nwmu

Nam

Nam = well known

If we left the incantation at Ik Onkar and Sat then the atheist also believe that the genus and the sky are also true. The atheist says that the genus is made up from one generation of a person to another. If a father dies then a son remains carrying on the genus. Later on you get grandchildren. In this way the genus remains forever. For this reason the atheists believe the genus of a species to be true.

The sky is the root cause. The sky is attributed to the virtue of darkness. The atheists also believe the sky to be real.

However the sky and the genus are said to be true in accordance to the atheists. However they are not well known. Not all the people believe that these are true.

The Lord God is well known and for this reason Nam was added. If Nam were not added the Ik Onkar Sat would not be attributed to God. Those atheists that say that the genus and the sky are true they would have attributed Ik Onkar Sat to their school of thought. However we wanted to attribute our incantation to the Lord only. For the reason of attributing this to Lord we made the incantation Ik Onkar Satnam. The One Lord God has a name that is the truth and he himself is the truth. The form of the illusion Maya and everything else is false. The name of God and the form of God is true. For this reason we attributed this to the form of God and had to extend the incantation.

The Sidhs then asked Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, “ Why did you not leave the incantation at Nam. What was the reason for adding Karta? By just saying this much of the incantation the Sikhs would gain divine knowledge. Why not leave the incantation as Ik Onkar Satnam?”

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji answered

krqw

Karta

Karta = creator

The reason why Karta was added because each human being has an individual name. Some people are Hindu and some Muslim. One person has one name and another has a different one. Due to the vast number of names the individuals would come to the assumption that the incantation was attributed to them. We wanted to attribute the incantation to God. For this reason Karta was added. The people have many names but none of them are the creator. God is the only creator he has created the holy word, which is known throughout the entire universe. Karta was added to make sure God is the one everything in this incantation is attributed to.

The Sidhs then asked, “What was the reason for adding Purkh? Why not just leave the incantation at Karta as just by reading the incantation the Sikhs would have gained divine knowledge.”

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer this question

purKu

Purkh

Purkh = male, complete within all

The reason why this was added to the incantation is due to suitors, blacksmiths and ironmongers all also being creators. For this reason due to the work that they do daily they all become creators. For this reason people think of them if the incantation was left at Karta.

There are many types of creators. There are people who create clothes from thread, people make jewellery from gold and weapons from iron. The second type of creator is one that makes things from his own such as a being in his sleep can create thousands of things. A spider can be a creator as it can make a web from itself.

The only difference between a spider and God as a creator is that the spider has to make its web from himself. God however can create everything from just a command or thought. In all of his creation God is complete and mixes with his creation.

The created creation of the Lord is being looked after by God while he continues to create it. For this reason Purkh has been added. The other creators are real but they are not complete or mixed in what they are creating. For this reason Purkh was added as the incantation was to be attributed to God only and not the other creators.

Another reason why Purkh was added because the illusion known as Maya is also known to be a creator. The incantation was not to be attributed to the illusion known as Maya but the Lord. For this reason Purkh was added due to it representing a masculine force. The only true masculine or male is God as all others in creation are his counter part. For this reason Purkh was added so that the incantation could still be attributed to God.

The Sidhs hearing this asked, “O true king what was the need of adding Nirbhou? Why not just leave the incantation at Purkh as just by reading the incantation the Sikhs would have gained divine knowledge.”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer this question

inrBau

Nirbhou

Nirbhou = without fear

The incantation could not be left at Purkh as the stories connected to holy people say that they are Purkh. They say that they are complete. Some people also call themselves complete and now call themselves creators of all sorts of things. Due to this Nirbhou was added as this incantation is to be attributed to God and not human beings.

The human beings are not Nirbhou. They fear the thought of death and this fear is implanted in them and remains with them all through life. Due to this it was added as only God is without fear and the incantation was made to attribute to him only.

The Sidhs then asked, “What was the need of adding Nirvair? Why not just leave the incantation at Nirbhou as just by reading the incantation to this point the Sikhs would have gained divine knowledge”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer this question

inrvYru

Nirvair

Nirvair = no emnity

The attribute of Nirvair was added because demon kings such as Ravan, Sawasbeeraj, Harnaksh and Mahiravan who were also without fear.

Harnaksh made the world revere him and hated the demi god Vishnu. He wanted to kill the demi god as revenge for the killing of his brother. Harnaksh made the world live in fear of him and made everyone recite his name. He called himself God. He lived without fear of anyone and saw himself as invincible.

Ravan was another demon king who could not be burned by fire and could not drown in water. He also lived without fear of anyone and believed himself to be immortal.

These beings were indeed without fear and if the incantation ended there then people would attribute it to them. The incantation was to be attributed to God alone and due to Nirvair was added. These demon kings were not without enmity as they considered God as an enemy and many other people. By adding this the incantation could still be attributed to God. God also is both without fear and without enmity. No other being is the same.

The Sidhs then asked, “ Why not just leave the incantation at Nirvair? What was the need to continue the incantation and add Akaal?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer the question

Akwl

Akaal

Akaal = no death

This was added to the incantation due to the saints also being without enemies. They see all beings as that of God. For this reason the incantation was continued as it was not supposed to be attributed to the saints but God. Akaal was added as the saints are susceptible to death. Their bodies eventually have to succumb to the inevitable death.

God however has a form that does not perish and is exempt to the flaw of death. God alone is immortal.

Akaal, which means beyond death was added. If this was not added the incantation would attribute to the saints and not God. The incantation was made to be attributed to God and for this reason it had to be extended.

The Sidhs then asked, “Why not stop the incantation at Akaal? What was the reason for adding the word Moorat?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer the question

mUriq

Moorat

Moorat = form

The incantation was continued due to time also being immortal and never ending. The time zones of past, present and future remain forever. People believe time to be endless. If Moorat was not added then people would attribute the incantation to time. Time is not without form. It has forms such as seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, etc. God however is without any form and due to this it was added to show that this incantation is attributed to God only.

Another reason for continuing the incantation is that science states that the shards of broken pottery remain the same. Such as an earthen pot can be broken but all the shards although are not in the same form as before they remain the same. For this reason the incantation continued to separate God from the basic shards. For this reason Moorat was added.

The Sidhs then said, “Why not stop the incantation at Moorat? What was the reason for making it longer and adding Ajooni? The Sikhs would have gained divine knowledge by reading the incantation up to Moorat.”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer the question

AjUnI

Ajooni

Ajooni = without birth

The reason why the incantation could not be left at Moorat was due to God creating the atom, which is without form. The point of the incantation was to attribute it to God alone. If the incantation was left at Moorat then people may have attributed it to the basic atom. For this reason Ajooni was added. God was the only thing not created.

The Sidhs then asked, “ Why was the incantation continued and not left at Ajooni? What was the need to add Sai Bhang?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer the question

sYBM

Sai Bhang

Sai Bhang = self illuminating

The illusion known as Maya is also unborn. She has not been born at any point that any being knows of. Also no one can state where she was born. The point of the incantation was to be attributed to God however if it was left at Ajooni then some people would have attributed this incantation to the illusion known as Maya.

For this reason Sai Bhang was added to the incantation. The illusion known as Maya is not self illuminated but is illuminated by God. God alone is self-illuminated. For this reason Sai Bhang was added so that the incantation could only be attributed to God.

The Sidhs hearing this asked, “ What is the reason to continue the incantation and adding Gur? Why not leave the incantation at this point and leave it at Sai Bhang?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer this question

gur

Gur

Gur = supreme cosciousness

This is due to the sun, moon, lightening, water, fire and stars being self-illuminated. In order for these to illuminate you do not need to add an accelerant such as oil, petrol, gas, etc. They illuminate themselves according to science and the atheists. The eyes can see this illumination. The light for the eyes to see is from the form of the supreme consciousness.

For the eyes to see there is a form of light in them. The sun, moon stars, etc are not self illuminated but are illuminated by another. At the time of the doomsday when it comes to their destruction they will become black and no longer illuminate. Due to the power of God these things are illuminated.

These cannot be the form of the supreme consciousness. In order to attribute this incantation to God the word Gur was added. There is only one form of supreme consciousness in all of existence and that is the Lord God.

The Sidhs then asked, “What was the reason for adding Parsad to the incantation? Why not just leave the incantation at Gur?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer this question

pRswid

Parsad

Parsad = supreme bliss, grateful

Parsad was added due to Gur meaning great or big. The biggest mountain according to mythology is the Sumer Mountain. Other things such as the expanse of the universe are also called big and great. So in order to show that God is greater then them the incantation had to continue. None of these things mentioned are the form of supreme bliss and are not graceful. There may be many things that are great but they are neither the form of supreme bliss or graceful. Only God is graceful and the form of supreme bliss for this reason Parsad was added to the incantation so that it could be attributed to God.

The Sidhs then asked, “You have explained why you put Parsad in the incantation but what was the need to add the numeral one at the start of it?

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer this question

<>

Ik Onkar

Ik = one, unique, constant

The people of the earth state that they are in supreme bliss once they have eaten a meal.

A human being can remain in a state of bliss whilst in yoga as long as his mind is settled. However later the concentration can be broken and due to this person falls out of bliss.

However God is the supreme blissful being who is graceful. He is like an ocean of water, which never changes. The water never spills, never runs out, does not get cold, does not get hot and does not get dirty. It forever remains the same. Unlike the bliss from eating or doing yoga, God never changes. God is one and is unique. For this reason the numeral one was so that the incantation would be attributed to the lord only.

The Sidhs then asked, “You added Ik what was the reason for adding Onkar to the incantation?”

Onkar = illuminator of all

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer this question

There is but one illusion known as Maya. But Maya is not the root cause of everything. God alone is the illuminator of everything and gives everyone knowledge. For this reason Onkar was added so that the incantation could be attributed to God only.

The Sidhs then asked, “You have said Ik Onkar for your incantation. Why did you extend the incantation further then this? Why did you add Sat to the incantation?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on to answer this question

siq

Sat

Sat = true

Due to God populating the three domains of heaven, earth and hell he is considered to be true. For this reason Sat was added in order to attribute the incantation to God.

This is the Atee Biapatee Dosh Nivirat meaning of the Maha Mantra of the Jap Ji Sahib. This was explained in order to show that the incantation was made to attribute it only to God and no other.

The incantation from <> to gur pRswid is known as the Maha Mantar (the great incantation). God gave this to Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji when they went into the Beas River and stayed under it for three days. This was the basic message given by god to Guru Nanak Dev I so that it could be given to all of mankind. This was done in order to teach the world about God.

Akaal = immortal, Moorat = form

Due to God being exempt from the cycle of transmigration and never taking birth he has an immortal form. The Sikhs then asked, “How is God beyond birth and death?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji answered the question

AjUnI

Ajooni

Ajooni = beyond birth and death

Due to God being a self-illuminating being he is beyond birth and death. He does not enter the cycle of transmigration. Those beings that are illuminated by another source cannot be considered as being beyond birth and death. Only God is self-illuminated and is exempt from entering the cycle of transmigration.

The Sikhs then asked, “How is God self illuminated?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji answered this question

Sai Bhang

Sai Bhang = self illuminated

God is the great being who gives grace to all. God is the one who adorned the form of the ten Gurus and graced all of humanity. God is the one who has given the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji the throne of authority and they as the spiritual master are giving grace to the world.

This shows that the Gurus who are the spiritual masters are here to give grace to other in order for another’s good.

The Fal meaning. This is the meaning to show what rewards one receives from the incantation.

The Sidhs asked, “By reciting your incantation what rewards does a person receive?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji said the reward that one receives is as follows –

God who is without fear (inrBau), beyond birth and death (AjUnI) and is self illuminated (sYBM) has this incantation as God is one and without duality, he gives all persons knowledge, he cannot be destroyed and his name if well known and the form of truth through the world (<>siqnwmuu). The worshipper of the incantation is the being (purKu) who with the grace of the true spiritual master (gurpRswid), becomes without fear (inrvYru), immortal form (Akwl mUriq) and the doer of all (krqw). Whoever does recite this incantation will receive this reward.

The Lakhan meaning.

The Sidhs asked, “ There a two types of utterance and characteristics with regards of scriptures. The characteristics are permanent and temporary. Can you tell us in your incantation which are permanent and temporary characteristics?”

Guru Nanak Dev Ji went onto answer the question

The incantation has both characteristics in it –

Saroop Lakhan – These are the permanent characteristics of God. God is always the form of supreme consciousness and bliss.

God is always unique, distinguished and without duality (1). God cannot be destroyed (siq). God is exempt from birth and death and does not enter the cycle of transmigration (AjUnI). God is always self illuminated (sYBM).

These are the permanent characteristics of God and are in the incantation.

These are the supreme blissful and conscious characteristics of the Lord

Tatsathee Lakhan – These are the temporary characteristics of God.

When God creates the universe at that point the name of God (nwm) creates (krqw) everything and is complete (purKu) in all. When God comes to doomsday then he will not be creating anything but will be destroying all of creation.

Onkar is also a temporary characteristic as at the time of doomsday God will not be giving knowledge and illuminating things when destroying all.

To find out all of these things one needs the grace of a spiritual master (gurpRswid) to know what characteristics are permanent and temporary.

The Sidhs then asked, “ In the Upanishads there are many incantations all of different lengths. Some of the incantations are of 5 letters, some of 7, some of 12 and some of 16 letters. Tell us about your incantation. Is your incantation similar or different to these?”

Upaans – the type of incantation that is said with the lips in a low volume so that only the reader can hear it and no one else can understand it.

Manas – It is the type of recitation done in a persons mind

In the prayer of the Sri Jap Ji Sahib one should always become immersed in it. One should recite it with the mind, scripture and body becoming one. One should recite the name of God in the four ways of Vaikhree, Madhma, Pasantee and Para.

Whatever a person puts into their mouth will go into their body. The name of God is also inside a person but is hidden.

By reciting the name of God it embeds itself in a persons body.

Vaikhree – This is where one recites the name of God by the mouth.

Madhma - This is where the recitation of the name of God is done in the neck. The son of the third Guru, Baba Mohan Singh Ji used to recite the name of God from the Madhma.

Pasantee – This is where the recitation of the name of God is done in the heart and the name of God is said with every breath of air inhaled and exhaled.

Para – This is where the recitation of the name of God is done from behind the belly button. The name of God is then forever being repeated day and night without any resolve or determination.

The following are rules to respect when reciting the name of God.

3) One should speak little when listening to the divine scriptures.

4) A person should remain content and patient.

6) All people present should join in with the utterance of the scriptures.

7) One should forget their ego and sit in the presence of their spiritual master.

8) One should have full faith and belief in their spiritual master.

9) One should refrain from sexual procreation until after one has completed their worship of the Lord.

A person should have all their thoughts focused on understanding the meanings of the scriptures. After listening and meditating on the Lord one should not go back into idle gossip and conversation due to it breaking the bliss that one has created. One should not eat too much as well so that it makes a person tired.

A person should do all of these things so that they can start to comprehend the almighty Lord better.
