Amritsar airport takes off on new high - internationally

Amritsar : The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has some competition after all. Amritsar's Rajasansi airport has taken off literally on a new high with dozens of international flights landing and flying out - mostly booked to capacity.

Figure this. With over 80 departures during peak time a week, the airport here has come of its own, especially after 2005. Out of the over dozen airlines that operate from here, eight have international flights. Even during lean season (May-August), the departures never fall below 60 per week.

The total number of passengers handled by the airport here nearly touched 600,000 in 2006-07. Of these, 488,310 were international passengers while only 107,918 passengers were domestic ones.

Thanks to Punjab's ever-increasing population of NRIs and also the attraction of coming to the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh shrines, Amritsar has emerged as a destination in its own might.

"Amritsar is the new destination for international travellers. With so many NRIs around and people wanting to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, this airport is bound to grow. People who were till now forced to go to Delhi for international flights can now easily board from here," pointed out Amritsar-based builder Harvinder Pal Singh.

Compared to the number of passengers it was catering to just a decade ago - 22,190 in 1997-98 - Amritsar's flight plan took off in 2002-03 with over 178,000 passengers that year. In 2006-07, the passenger growth touched 596,228.

In just four years, the passenger growth is nearly three and a half times.

Aircraft movement, which was 1,864 in 2002-03, touched 5,754 in 2006-07.

The growth potential of this airport can be seen from the interest of various airlines to operate from here.

Singapore Airlines has been operating from here for over one year. Malaysia's successful budget airline - Air Asia - is planning to start its first flights out of India from Amritsar in October. Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan Airlines are already operating from here.

Airport Director Arun Talwar is upbeat not only about the growth of passengers and flights from here but also the expansion plans for the airport.

"It is the fastest growing airport in the country. With cargo operations starting Aug 1, the airport will see even more fights. Last year, Amritsar beat Goa and Ahmedabad in terms of international passenger growth," Talwar told IANS.

Amritsar recorded 488,310 international passengers compared to nearly 400,000 at both Goa and Ahmedabad - both airports known to attract tourists and business visitors.

The airport's terminal building is being renovated and expanded from its earlier covered area of 14,500 square metres to over 41,000 square metres. The building, which now has a passenger handling capacity of 500, will be able to handle 1,200 passengers by March 2008.

The runway at the airport is being extended from its present length of 10,790 feet to 12,000 feet. The airport will have nine parking bays within a couple of months compared to the present three. The Punjab government is providing 44 acres of land to facilitate the expansion plans.

"The growth of this airport has been such in recent years that projected figures for future plans have already been surpassed. The new plans are in line with future requirements till 2015," Talwar said.

Even though it is tucked in the northwest corner of the state, Amritsar is only two-three hours away from industrial hubs Ludhiana and Jalandhar. New Delhi in comparison is 8-10 hours away.

"It is so convenient to take flights from here instead of going to Delhi. If only more airlines start their flights from here to Britain, US and Canada, Amritsar will soon be in the big league of airports," says Rajdeep Abroal of Ludhiana.

I don't think it's the common Punjabi that is creating these problems. The issue of international airports in Jullundur and Ludhiana is created by land speculators trying to make a quick buck. Word got out that the government was due to announce the upgrading of either Halwara or Sahnewal airports to international status so the speculators started to buy land nearby, the price of which skyrocketed but when the announcement didn't come the prices fell again. Now they government is announcing that Mohali may get an international airport which will lead to more land speculation. The Mohali idea just shows how stupid or mischevious the people in power are trying to build another international airport at the extreme edge of the state.

I don't think that any of the people who live in the west whose back ground is from Jullundur or Ludhiana are bothered about an airport in their districts. From Amritsar to Jullundur is only 1 and half hours and Ludhiana about 2 and a half hours so it's no big deal for them.

During the same season Jet charges something like £525 from London Heathrow to Amritsar whilst from the same airport to Delhi is £390! Considering that Amritsar is closer by nearly an hour than Delhi as well as the fact that the load factor (% of seats sold) is greater in the Amritsar flights than the Delhi ones then the prices don't make any sense.

Demand and supply more demand less supply hence higher price. Plus the surcharges at the airport may be higher than Delhi. Plus the government knows its Punjabis who go there the most.

The government will not open up routes to Amritsar either. BA and Virgin have been trying to get a route to Amritsar from UK. They wont give it them yet these cheap airlines (except Jet airways) can get them Air India fly there from Birmingham also, however they control the Indian skies so you would expect it.

From very strong source.. i can state 8 international flights wants contract/permission to use ASR airport (not some cheap turkmenistan or Uzbekistan)...

Can you reveal your source? if not can u tell us which airlines. Do you know why they cant get permission. Its funny isnt it that all the cheap airlines get it, yet non of any stance do. Even Air Solvakia fly there when theyu r not going bankrupt.

    • Part of the problem is the hostilities between India and Pakistan. If the border were open, Amritsar would easily become a huge trading city. Secondly, the National Highways Authority of India is constructing a new 6-lane expressway from Kashmir, through Amritsar/Jalandhar/Ludhiana to Dehli which will be part of the Ludhiana-Delhi-Kolkatta Industrial Corridor.  Maps of the New Silk Road show Kolkata as a key part of the "road". The Punjab to Kolkata expressway and rail connections will fulfill the ability to hook up to the New Silk Road.  In addition, while crossing to Pakistan via AH1 (Asian Highway 1) is difficult, India does connect to AH1 on the other side, towards the East. Finally, Punjab can trade with the world via Mundra port in Gujurat. Rail to Mundra, then sea onwards. Dubai is very close with a free port. If you send products to Iran, there are ground links onward to Europe.

    • You're confusing two different things: One is merely adding starch to a turban to get a certain feel to the fabric. The other is tying your turban once and taking it off like a hat.     • The reason you don't see anything wrong with it is because like a fish in water, you grew up in Western culture and imbibed it fully. It's very difficult to for parents to inculcate traditional culture while in the West. The reason there is a problem is because a kiss between a man and wife is a sexual act (I didn't say it's coitus, but it's still sexual.) By contrast a kiss between a mother and a child, for example, is not sexual. And in our culture, sexual acts are not allowed in public. Goras do allow it. And that's also the reason they have gay pride parades now with people walking around naked with children in attendance and so forth.
