Anti-Sikh preacher barred from temple

KAREN BURKE - 23 August 2007

A PREACHER has been barred from speaking at a Hindu temple after fears he could disrupt the harmony among faiths in Redbridge.

Members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Albert Road, Ilford, held an emergency meeting after they were told a man reputed to hold anti-Sikh views had been booked to speak there.

Sikhs were in communication with the temple throughout Monday, alerting members to the dangers of allowing the preacher to go ahead and members cancelled the booking, due to have taken place on Tuesday from 7pm until 10pm.

Goodmayes ward councillor Satnam Singh said the preacher, who goes by the name of Maharaj (meaning God-like) Tarlochan, had come over from India to tour the UK.

"This guy comes from India from a simple sect," said Cllr Singh.

"He booked the Hindu temple in Albert Road, but the management did not know who this guy was at the time.

"He was in Leicester for a booking last week and the Sikh and Hindu communities got together and contacted the police.

"I have not heard him speak, but he is reputed to be anti-Sikh."

Cllr Singh said a preacher, who voiced the same anti-Sikh views as Tarlochan, was shot by two young men at a gathering outside the area 10 years ago.

Tarlochan uses the dead man's name, Darshan Das - said to be his father - after his own name.

"Tarlochan is seen as divisive and we don't want him disrupting our community relations," added Cllr Singh. "He would walk away but we would carry the can."

Swarn Singh Kandola, general secretary of Sikh group Singh Sabha London East, said: "I am really happy that after all the contact, the Hindu management cancelled it. They should be congratulated."

Raj Chanan, chairman of Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Ilford, said: "I booked him because somebody came to me and said he wanted to book the hall for a spiritual discourse.

"I understand from a number of organisations that this is a disruptive man and he shouldn't preach at the temple because he would cause disharmony.

Good to see some involvement from the local Gurdwara committee took. Perhaps that's why the issue was taken seriously by the Hindu committee.

There are numerous anti-panthic groups/dehdhari groups who openly tour the UK without any resistance, namely Namdharis, Radhosoamis and Nirankaris. Some even perform kirtan and katha openly on Sikh Gurdwara stages. It would be good to see these Committees also take the responsiblity of this, particularly if this is within a Gurdwara itself.

I know of committee members that are radha swami's who are on managing comiitees. what action do you expect them to take against other radha swami's. admittedly there are very few comiittees as such, but ideqally there should be none.

Jagtar Singh Ji,

It is very encouraging to see an active response from local Prabhandak committees, Sikh councillors and other Sikh organisations regarding the tour of this individual.

What would be even more uplifting is to see these same Prabhandaks, Councillors and Sikh Organisations taking the same active stand against the beadbi of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Saroop within banqueting halls and hotels. Also the same kind of active stand from our leaders against the use of alcohol, meat, tobacco and dance music within Gurdwara complexes would be most appreciated. We don’t need to always wait for an anti panthic cult leader to tour the UK, there are dozens of real life issues going on at the moment where involvement from local Sikh leaders would go a long way.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
