Into some, he sets pearls, while to others, he attaches filth. ||2||

God gave wealth to the miser for him to preserve, but the fool calls it his own.

When the Messenger of Death strikes him with his club, in an instant, everything is settled. ||3||

The Lord's humble servant is called the most exalted Saint; he obeys the Command of the Lord's Order, and obtains peace.

i think basically maharaj is saying that ppl are sooo engrossed in the world and maya, that death hits them suden;y, and they lose all they ever had

i think twe prasad savayye discusses a bit about this

the bird cage could be your physical body, and the soul(the bird) is taken away from it when death arrives, and all that is left is the lifeless body(torn threads), the same lifeless body which we then take to cremate or bury, because it is worthless to anyone now, life has left it, so we burn it, bury it. the same body or cage which we once thought was unbreakable.

just a thought, guru sahib's baani, dhur ki baani is vast, so don't take this as a final thought, but the beginning of a lifetime of vichaar, which is sikhi...

i also think achintay baaj bhaey isn't necessarily just referring to manmukh lok...

Gurmukh lok accept death, i agree. but it doesn't necessarily mean that they know when it's coming... they just accept that when their time comes, they go with a smile or what not.

achintay baaj bhaey simply just says death is uncertain. the only certainty is that it will occur...

My interpretation is that the cage represents material/worldly things that a person keeps around him/her, things that make you forget about Waheguru and death (that death can come at any moment) surrounded by "their" material things a person feels safe, but the messenger of death breaks through all of these things and takes the soul (bird) away leaving only the the torn threads (your body).

As for the Manmukh part, I agree with sher-e-moreau's second post. The bird must represent a Manmukh b/c I thought that a Gurmukh does not suffer the pain of death and does not go with the messenger of death?

The faithful do not have to go with the Messenger of Death

For those who serve their Guru, there is no punishment at the hands of the Messenger of Death

Serving the Guru, one is released from the Messenger of Death.

The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord with the tongue. ||1||

A really nice discussion.

Daas thinks Mann Veerji is right about the Cage representing the body and the Bird representing the soul. This comes up quite often in Gurbani.

To understand the part about the threads, i think we we need to look at the previous line too.

Calling out "Mine Mine" is like saying and believing that all things in your life are yours. And you attach yourself to them as if you were connected to them by string.

When Jum comes, the messenger of death, it takes the soul out of the body. All those things that you thought belonged to you, that you thought were yours, when death comes, none of them go with you. You cant keep hold of them, the stings break and all thats left is the torn threads.

But Maharaj knows the real meanings :) :upid:
