Women's Shaheedee Jatha On The Road To Self Immolation

AMRITSAR - Five Sikh women of the Danga Peerit Welfare Society, dressed in what they described as Shaheedee baana (martyr's robes) - black gowns, a black ribbon on their mouths, with their heads covered with saffron cloth - did ardaas at the Akal Takht before setting off for Chandigarh. Mata Harbans Kaur, 60, Kashmir Kaur, 42, Gurcharan Kaur, 40, Harbans Kaur, 50, and Gurdeep Kaur are to self immolate on June 03 in front of the residence of Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh.

The Shaheedee Jatha, or martyr's group, is protesting non-implementation of the decision announced by the previous Government for the welfare and rehabilitation of the victims of the 1984 anti Sikh pogroms in Delhi.

No member of the apex Sikh body, the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), or any representative of the Akal Takht was present. Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh has disapproved of the decision by the women to commit suicide stating that it is against the Reht Maryada, the Sikh Code of Conduct.

In a meeting with the representatives of the society, the Jathedar made it amply clear that the request for intervention would be considered only if the suicide mission is dropped.

Society General Secretary Amarjit Singh has declared his intention to be part of the next Shaheedee Jatha.

"As many as 500 victims of the pogroms arrived at the Akal Takht from various places in Punjab," informed Surjit Singh, President of the society.

Members of the Society will accompany the Shaheedee Jatha to Jalandhar, where an effigy of Amarinder Singh is to be burnt. After an overnight stay

at Nawanshehar, the activists are expected to arrive at the residence of the Chief Minister at 12 noon on Tuesday.

Some of the demands are allotment of 327 booths and plots of land at Dugri and Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana; allotment of 200 booths at Mohali and Patiala; allotment of 230 houses in CRP colony and setting up of a 10+2 Government School at Dugri.
