I am not sure if sangat here is already aware of peak oil - but the issue is real and happening - as I write this oil has reached 139$ /bl - highest ever

I know people will try to counter this with

(i) There is too much oil to ever run out - oil prices are up because of speculators.

(ii) There are alternative sources of energy - wind ,solar and hey now you can produce energy from corn too.

(iii) Human ingenuity will help us get out of this mess.

Mark my words - markets will collapse - money will be reduced to just papaer - jobs will disappear - there will be widespread anarchy wars (iraq war is already about oil ) and famine - and world population will drop back to what it was before we discovered black gold - 1 billion

All complex systems eventually collapse - this is that moment for human civilization.

oh please, for decades if not centuries people have argued that the earth can not sustain so many people, and yet the human race has gone from strength to strength. The beauty of the market, and the forces of creative destruction are that these crisis we face in periodic waves just leads to drmatic improvments.

Over a century ago (1851 TO BE EXACT), when Crude oil had not been discovered whale oil was used to power everything, a barrel of oil cost $1200s in todays money, (we complain when it only $138) Whales were almost hunted to extinction, and as they did the high price promoted technological advances, it encouarged the search for alternatives eventually Crude oil was discovered. Thats how capitalism works.

The probelms faced by the world today are all the fault of government, high food price all down to subsidies in the USA and EU, aswell as export bans in Asia. High price of oil, subsidies, which 75% of the worls population receives and has prices rise it has no effect on them beacuse they have no incentive to cut down.

All the great acheivments have come because of short term problems, look at nuclear power, had world war 2 not occured the development of the Nuke would have taken many more years (there wouldn't be an urgent need).

"All complex systems eventually collapse" only beacuse in the past they have been run by governments. From the Romans to the Soviet Union, the only systems that havnt worked are those that are centrally controllled. Unless Humans are free, progress can never be made.

It was Einteins own intution that led him to make his breaktrhoughs, it was Hawking who discovered black hole because he was able to., it wasnt down to some civil servant telling him.

The succsess of our "complex system" has come from are tremendous ability to adapt, because it is the most flexible, and as a result has no alternative. Look around the world the countries with the most problems are those with powerful governments who dont let there people flourish.

All this scare mongoring, is just that.

The world won't end, but will change for sure. There was ice age before the age we see today. Now temperature of the globe is increasing and glaciers are shrinking. The next world war will be fought not for Oil, but Water.

Punjab was before a large ocean named Tipnis. But that was millions of years ago. Everything on this planet goes through change, same thing applies to Earth. Humans won't die, we might evolve into another species with time.

To be honest, no one knows when the world is going to end. The only thing is to live everyday like there is no tomorrow and to be thankful for what you have. Only God knows for sure when this world will end. But that's just my opinion.

In the words of the REM song-;

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine!

Does anyone know of a company that makes carts for horses? They look like a great investment opportunity!

.

Thanks everyone for taking time to reply. After I posted this post someone posted this must watch video on internet featured on history channel

khalistani,

As to your comment about human ingenuity saving the day - we need a stable environment for scientists to research for at least a decade or two - but all i see is complete anarchy coming our way.

A clarification "world is not coming to an end" but world as we know it is that means lot less people on the planet , no internet , no factories and a largely farming lifestyle.

Also all complex systems collapse not into smithereens but into something much simpler.

Fertilizers and pesticides both come from Petorleum and soon they will be beyond reach of avg farmer in India - leading to large scale starvation.
