Recommended Posts

Dear Sikh brothers and sisters,

Can anybody please explain the following verse from the SGGS ?

Shabad/Paurhi/Salok Guru Granth Sahib Page 1165

Kādẖ kẖaṛag kāl bẖai kopio mohi baṯāo jo ṯuhi rākẖai.

Harnaakhash thundered with rage and threatened to kill Prahlaad. "Tell me, who can save you?

Pīṯ pīṯāʼnbar ṯaribẖavaṇ ḏẖaṇī thambẖ māhi har bẖākẖai. ||4||

Prahlaad answered, "The Lord, the Master of the three worlds, is contained even in this pillar to which I am tied."||4||

Harnākẖas jin nakẖah biḏārio sur nar kīė sanāthā.

The Lord who tore Harnaakhash apart with His nails proclaimed Himself the Lord of gods and men.

Kahi nāmḏėo ham narhar ḏẖiāveh rām abẖai paḏ ḏāṯā. ||5||3||9||

Says Naam Dayv, I meditate on the Lord, the Man-lion, the Giver of fearless dignity. ||5||3||9||

I would realy appreciate a response.

Thanks

Mardana

Please remember that Dhan Dhan Sri Guroo Granth Sahib Ji Mahraj is not a book, but our King our Guroo, so lets not use the word "page", but "ang" (body part) :)

Bhagat Prehlad Ji has been mentioned numerous times in Gurbani, we praise bhagat ji for the immense sharda they had, and were not willing to give up bhagti no matter what the price.

Guroo Sahib gives a full account of the sakhi of Dhan Dhan Prehlad Ji:

Parahlāḏ paṯẖāė paṛan sāl.

Prahlaad was sent to school.

Sang sakẖā baho līė bāl.

He took many of his friends along with him.

Mo kao kahā paṛĥāvas āl jāl.

He asked his teacher, "Why do you teach me about worldly affairs?

Mėrī patīā likẖ ḏėh sarī gopāl. ||1||

Write the Name of the Dear Lord on my tablet."||1||

Nahī cẖẖodao rė bābā rām nām.

O Baba, I will not forsake the Name of the Lord.

Mėro aor paṛĥan sio nahī kām. ||1|| rahāo.

I will not bother with any other lessons. ||1||Pause||

Sandai markai kahio jāė.

Sanda and Marka went to the king to complain.

Parahlāḏ bulāė bėg ḏẖāė.

He sent for Prahlaad to come at once.

Ŧū rām kahan kī cẖẖod bān.

He said to him, "Stop uttering the Lord's Name.

Ŧujẖ ṯuraṯ cẖẖadāū mėro kahio mān. ||2||

I shall release you at once, if you obey my words."||2||

Mo kao kahā saṯāvahu bār bār.

Prahlaad answered, "Why do you annoy me, over and over again?

Parabẖ jal thal gir kīė pahār.

God created the water, land, hills and mountains.

Ik rām na cẖẖodao gureh gār.

I shall not forsake the One Lord; if I did, I would be going against my Guru.

Mo kao gẖāl jār bẖāvai mār dār. ||3||

You might as well throw me into the fire and kill me."||3||

Kādẖ kẖaṛag kopio risāė.

The king became angry and drew his sword.

Ŧujẖ rākẖanhāro mohi baṯāė.

Show me your protector now!

Parabẖ thambẖ ṯė niksė kai bisthār.

So God emerged out of the pillar, and assumed a mighty form.

Harnākẖas cẖẖėḏio nakẖ biḏār. ||4||

He killed Harnaakhash, tearing him apart with his nails. ||4||

Oė param purakẖ ḏėvāḏẖ ḏėv.

The Supreme Lord God, the Divinity of the divine,

Bẖagaṯ hėṯ narsingẖ bẖėv.

for the sake of His devotee, assumed the form of the man-lion.

Kahi Kabīr ko lakẖai na pār.

Says Kabeer, no one can know the Lord's limits.

Parahlāḏ uḏẖārė anik bār. ||5||4||

He saves His devotees like Prahlaad over and over again. ||5||4||

Thanks for your reply. I want to clarify this portion of the verse

Parabẖ thambẖ ṯė niksė kai bisthār.

So God emerged out of the pillar, and assumed a mighty form.

Harnākẖas cẖẖėḏio nakẖ biḏār. ||4||

Is this God the Hindu God Vishnu ? That is what Hindus claim. Would appreciate a reply. Thanks.

Singhstah maybe you could give Guru Maharaj more respect as well. If you gonna post a shabad then put its title as well. jus posting the words to the shabad without the title is giving full repsect?

Chatanga, maafi ji but there was no raag title at the beginning of this shabad, it just continued straight on from the last shabad by Dhan Dhan Bhagat Kabeer Ji, have a see on ang 1195.

Vahegurrroooo.

sikha, Vaheguroo isn't the same as the hindu god's of the past, for example in one shabad bhagat kabeer ji makes a clear distinction between Vaheguroo and the hindu god raam, saying that Vaheguroo is pervaiding everywhere, while the hindu god raam chandar pervades only in himself. The hindu gods are all just CREATIONS of Vaheguroo, they do not equal the greatness of Akaal Purakh Vaheguroo by even a miniscule amount.

Vaheguroo is inside his creation and can do what he wants with it, so he decided to reveal himself in one way, as the point is Vaheguroo will go to any lengths to save the people who love him and have faith in him.

There's a lot more to the story. Can't remember the exact details but:

The King somehow was granted protection in that he would never be killed by any man in this world.

The King wants to kill Prahlaad.

Prahlaad remembers the Lord.

The Lord comes in the form of Narsingh - halfman and half-lion (so not a man).

Narsingh then takes the king and drags him somewhere where there is no sky nor ground (ie not this world).

Narsingh kills him to protect his saint.

My point exactly. I thought Sikhism does not believe in avatars and assuming forms. But Hindus use this shabad and claim this is Hinduism ? Is this right ?

Can we get an exact interpretation from a scholar ?

Thanks

Mardana

I'm No scholar but,

Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj explains in the Dassam Guru Granth that God told Vishnu to take form of the Avatars including Narsingha but Guru ji also explains that the ultimate power shakti is AkalPuraks Alone.

We as Sikhs worship the Nirgun qualities of Narsingha. Others worship the Sargun aspects.
