Just wondering, why do we call someone around our age veerji or bhainji? They have a name, so we should be calling them by their name. We don't call goray as veerjis/bhainjis, because they're mutual, and understand, therefore use only the person's name to refer to them.

For most of us its just a sign of respect, but to an extent it does have to do with kaam. But if you regard others as your brothers and sisters you wouldn't really have to call them your brother or sister, you and they would automatically know right? Like, how many time do you call your own brother/sister in your family by 'veerji / bhainji', might be very few. Then why do we use such terms to classify fellow Sikhs, we can call them by their name, can't we? :@

I understand with the same sex its not much of a problem, like a singh calling another singh veerji is alright and a kaur calling another kaur, bhainji is also ok, but why's there more of emphasis when a singh calls a kaur bhainji, or when a kaur calls a singh veerji, is it really that hard to control kaam?

Bhul chuk muaf karnee ji, just wanted to get the sangat's view on it. ^_^

I Doubt its got to do with Kaam - its more like for respect

I knwo I use it for respect

as I'm youunger than most on this forum

But I try to call everyone Veer jee / Bhenji just for respect

well...itz a sign of respect actually...

but...i would like to confess sumthing...i dun actually call my REAL bro veerji..but by his name..itz just like that...coz if i call him veerji..i feel weird..lolzz..but itz normal to me to call a person elder than me veerji... :@

makes me sick at times when ppl use it just as a freaking term to show fake respect and dont mind if they end up marrying the same person in future :@ ...the logic given is that in Sikhi everyone is ur bro/sis till marriage...ok i agree but come on u gotta have some self respect for ur own words blush.gif ...i mean come on :@

dont be surprised, but sometimes its NOT used by many just to keep eyes and options open for other fish out there in the sea which is why they wont use veerjee/bhainjee for anyone, if u know what i mean :)

anyways...this issue screwed up my head pretty bad for 3 days last weekend and i lost a hell load of temper breaking my head as to why people are this way...in the end, all i know is that one has to show one's face to Guruji, and even after being a Sikh if one has that "keep looking around" nature, then best of luck when u meet Dharmraj.

may Guruji keep us away from such thoughts and mentalities :WW: pray.gif

Say you call someone a veerji/bhainji then what if you end up marrying them!! THat's disgusting!!

Going back to the original post, why would you call someone that, when you already know in your heart, they're your veerji/bhainji, and if you don't know their name(s), then you shouldn't really be calling them your "veerji" or "bhainji", different people take it different ways. Why not just stick to the person's name and if you don't know their name you can say excuse me, and refer to them in countless other terms.

what u've wrote is true also...but then..itz a sign of respect..

btw..i'm going against myselft!!...we can say.,...for e.g jagjit JI..rite?? itz also respect...we dun have to say veerji or phenji...hmm..i'm a 2 sider now..lolz...anyone will do!!! :@

I know my brothers really well. The love and understanding between us is well...understood.

But this is not true with family friends and associations not as close as the immediate family. So as to not offend (which can be easy to do), terms like Veerji and Bhainji are used. Other times, it is used just out of the sheer respect of a person.

But i agree wit all that it is respect. And regarding gorai... i call gorai .. brother/sister ... and sometimes they ask why i do .. they like it :@ .. they see your respecting them then and using such words... ur acting in peaace rite.

But ya... about saying to someone veerji/bhainji to someone you may marry afterwards. Its not gross... its just a name ...

      I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving.       That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.

      Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!

      Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
