School Play - Acting Out Guru Ji

tbh - sometimes we all think its great to have Sikh taught in schools to make people more aware about Sikhi etc, which is good. However, this kinda stuff happening is inevitable really. Perphaps the consequences outweigh the benefits when sometime we try to promote Sikhi.

Theres been a few projects of late with good intentions which have ended up leading to some form of beadbi. i.e. the turbanizer application which was suppoosed to promote the turban. Think about how many sikhs gave shaheedi for us to wear dastars and now you go on that websites and theres pictures of peoples dogs wearing dastars - I hope im not the only one that finds that offensive. While often people do not mean to cause offense look at what we have seeen in recent times:

images of Gurus used to promote playing cards and casinos.

harimandir sahib being used on promotions for resteraunts and night clubs.

Ive also seen people work on Sikh comic characters, while again with good intention - how long before people who dont know about Sikhi decide to write story or comics with Sikh characters?

I think before "you throw your bottle out of the pram" you should approach all local leaders and get them to discuss what is the best way to promote sikhi without offending anyone.

The forum of this discussion should be done with representatives and the teacher who is spearheading the production. A suggestion might be to represent Guru ji through a voice over and orange/white light beam down onto the stage.

Might it be worth being liberal with such a contenious subject, has the play ACTUALLY been rehearsed? Or is it a suggestion that has been taken out of proportion by someone (which happens all the time!)

Nice to see three pages worth of "no's!" which if the case of what you have stated is correct, id agree with. But why not be sensible and people actually suggest better ways of promoting sikh history in a play!?

After all, if we dont who will!!!!!!!!

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

At Holly Lodge High School, Smethwick, Birmingham, the ICT and R.E teacher is aiming to hold a play about Vaisakhi, and they said they are going to need someone to act of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. Please, let me know what we can do, and, I shall show this post to the school.

She even quoted that "It does not say in the book" (trying to call the Guru Granth Sahib a BOOK).

Please try and stop this!

Fateh.

Do you realise, everytime you wake in the morning, do your nitnem, wear a dastar, put a bana on with shastar and remain tyar bar tyar you are acting Guru Gobind Singh Ji!!!!

What's is wrong in all your heads, a play acting Guru ji is not paap, he wanted us to be so much like him he became one with us in the form of the khalsa. He is not so far away, he is within us, we are him, and he is us! That is my father! I want to be so much like him, I smile everytime I look in the mirror and see a dastar and dara and think vaaah!!!!

Object to what I have said, I don't care, you are more worried about someone acting Guru Gobind Singh, and you and me are forgetting about the rest of what's happening around us.. This is not beadbi. This is khalsa. We will never be able to peform what the Guru did, but acting is a way of educating the masses. Isn't it funny after watching films, you want to be that person, you will immitate the person in the movie, girls all around the world immitate the actresses based on what they see.

Let them see and imagine what Guru Gobind Singh is like through acting, there is nothing wrong in it!!
