With Chandni Chowk To China sinking without a titter, Akshay Kumar can't afford to take any risks. After the furore that was raised over the apology of a beard that Akshay Kumar sported as a Sikh in Anees Bazmi's Singh Is Kinng, Akshay Kumar is taking no chances.

For the role of the real-life Sardarji who sailed in the fateful ship named Kamagata Maru from Hong Kong to Vancouver in1914, Akshay is taking no chances. He'll grow the beard to the size stipulated by the Sikh community before plunging into the role in January 2010.

In fact, the actor smarting under the attack he faced for his improper beard length in Bazmi's bearded burlesque, has this time decided to set aside all his assignments for Kamagata Maru to avoid clashes with other projects.

Says Deepa Mehta, "Akshay is so amazing. Considering he has so much work on hand I was surprised when he absolutely insisted on growing a full-length beard. One of the reasons I postponed Kamagata Maru to to next year was so that Akshay would be able to block the entire chunk of dates for my film and keep the beard. I was very sure that I didn't want him for a month and then return with a false beard and finish my film. It's very important for actors to respect continuity. That's the only way to work."

Deepa saw Akshay Kumar play a Sardar in Singh Is Kinng before casting him in Kamagata Maru. "I thought he made a very good Sardar. He has a very Panju-Sardar look. Akshay has to play a 48-year old Sardar. And he's absolutely fine with a salt-and-pepper beard."

"Akshay is also the film's producer along with my life partner David Hamilton, so his interest in the film is very very deep," says Deepa.

Post the fiasco that's Chandni Chowk to China, Akshay Kumar is also counting on converting his comic currency into something more compelling and enduring. According to Deepa, Akshay Kumar will be seen in a completely non-comic serious and politically profound role in Kamagata Maru.

"Five years ago, Akshay was completely ready to transform his image in Water when he was to play the Gandhian reformist. The role in Kamagata Maru is far more challenging."

Most of Bollywood actors (since 50s 60s) are Punjabi Hindus... Actresses usually were of Bengali or other south or west Indian origin. Nowadays there are actors from different backgrounds. I don't know if Dharmendra counts as a Sikh as he and his dad were Arya Samajis. The only 'Sikh' stars (aka known actors, Monas) in Bollywood are Jimmy Shergill and Harman Baweja. Behind the screens, one of India's finest directors is a Sikh, Sampooran Singh Gulzar. Akshay is a Hindu Punjabi, but proud of his Punjabi roots, and also used to visit Gurudwaras with his grandma as a kid. The shabad he sang for T-series was from his childhood (he heard it often in a Gurduwara which he and his grandma visited).

I hope the film has no errors and protrays history correctly...

All the best to the films cast and crew.

Sunnybond singh, U seem to possess lots o knowledge about bollywood. Gulzar is not a sampooran sikh, but a mona. He made a good film Maachis.

Sikhs need to boycott bollywood. Watch hollywood movies like predator, terminator.

chao shukar hai

but that is also temporary

i herd in dhadrian wale cd diwan that some punjabi director want to make the movie where a patit sikh goes to dhadrian wale sant and sant ji preaches him that he shud become a gursikh and he becomes.

the dhadrian wale agreed that if that actor is willing to keep beard and kesh for whole life. but the director said that he is only an actor. then sant ranjit singh said that people will say that dekh layo baabe chuuthe gursikh bana rahe ne.

i really respect sant ranjit singh for his great love and dard for sikh panth

we need more chardikala sants which are short in numbers in todays modern world.

bhul chuk maaf

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
