Hanji, I had a question about kirtan. How come it's always only people on the vaja singing and not those on the tabla, occassionaly the tabla players sing along, but the vaja player always leads. Any particular reason?

i think unless you got skill on tabla, its sometimes hrd to multi task singing and tabla, might just be me but thats what ive found out. if i play tabla and then sing same time sometimes i got out of beat on tabla because i was trying to sing loud... might just be me though

modern keertanees excluding a few are so poor:

1 keertanees have no gursikhi jeevan

2 keertanees dont have enough knowledge and rehearsal to be as good as possible

3 tabla vadaks are no way good at all perod- how many tabla players can play like bhai raghbir singh (player for Bhai Balbir Singh Siromani Ragi)

4 As time goes on we can see Gurmat Sangeet is dying out and being replaced by a diluted vidiya of what little we know will do..........the same is with Katha vachiks and Granthis.

Once Sant Baba Takhur Singh Ji requested Bhai Balbir Singh to do a shabad in Raag Mlaar, this raag if performed correctly

can cause rainfall, it was the hot season at Mehta Chowk when Bhai Balbir Singh Sung this shabad to everyones suprise it began raining

Its hard to sing and play tabla together, i have loads of respect for those who can!

I can't sing and play tabla. I am not good on tabla and nor on singing and both together is the worst thing *g*

It needs very much practis to sing during your both hands are doing something. And specialy it's hard to stay in the rythm.

Only with maharaj's kirpa can a tabla player stay in beat while giving saath to the kirtaneea. In modern times, i've only seen 1 jatha where the tabla player can give full saath (Bhai Gurtar Singh, Hoshiarpur Wale)
