Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Gujri Ang 507

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh !!

Lakh Lakh Vadhaai to All - May Guru Sahib Shower Blessings on you all this Vaisakhi.

To celebrate Vaisakhi I am posting perhaps my most favourite painting of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

This image is from P S Padam's 'Gobind Saagar' - The image is from a Pracheen Saroop of Sri Dasam Granth - compiled under the guidance of Mata Sundari Ji. The painting dates from around CE 1700 - this date together with it being pasted into a saroop of Sri Dasm Granth complied by Mata Ji gives it special significance. It can be argued that it is perhaps one of the earliest portraits of Guru Sahib perhaps even a contemporary one.

Enjoy !

Thanks for that Freed!!!!!

What a treat. Do you know where the saroop of the Dasam Granth is? Any more info on it? If it was painted around 1700 (8 years before pita ji's passing) and is affiliated with Mata Ji then we may have an accurate record of how he dressed.

I always imagined bue and not saffron.

..........then we may have an accurate record of how he dressed.

Possibly, but bear in mind that this style of painting (Pahari) doesn't aim to be realistic - there's a lot of artistic license involved.

I understand but the image may also reflect contemporary dress albeit in a very stylised way.

I'm a bit confused anyway. I was under the impression that the Dasam Granth was compiled after Dasmesh Pita's passing?

I clearly remember a story from my younger days, of the decision being made to compile the various separate books that make up the granth on the successful assasination of Massa Ranghar. I'm pretty sure this happened in the middle of the 18th century.

What i never get is there is not a SINGLE picture from that time where ears are inside dumalle!!! :S Whats with ears out?? lol

I know and for the last few decades many Sikhs have been hiding or unaware of the fact that some Sikh warriors wore metal helmets over their kesh in battle.......hmm

i think if they wore a helmet... mahadurdev wouldnt have made singhs wear bunga and shasterdari dhumalla. a helmet wouldnt allow us to do a "jaat jaapah" and mahagurdev was farladhari. farla rehat is that nothing except saroop of maharaj can go ontop of farla.

a farla comes out of a bunga. a bunga is tied into your hair. helmets therefor could not be worn by farladharis

I'm not saying all did, but a small number did at least and with no opposition like there would be today.

I think they were mainly high ranking leaders who did, the aristrocracy perhaps?
