Labour and the Conservatives have lamented a “sad moment” for British politics after the far-right British National Party (BNP) won its first seats in the European Parliament.

The party’s leader Nick Griffin was elected in the North West, while Andrew Brons, a former leader of the National Front, secured victory in Yorkshire and Humberside. The BNP won 6.5 per cent of the overall vote, up 1.4 per cent on its performance in the 2004 European elections.Griffin’s party won a seat on the London Assembly last year but has never previously won representation on a national or European level.

In his victory speech, Griffin, who will receive thousands of pounds of European Union funding, said: “The most demonised and lied about party in British politics has made a massive breakthrough. The public have had their say in a democratic election and we should respect that.”

Brons, 61, who stood for election as a National Front candidate five times in the 1970s, re-entered far-right politics last year after retiring as a politics teacher. He said his victory had struck a blow against the “European dictatorship”.

“I don't need to tell you that my election is not universally popular ... But despite the lies, despite the misrepresentation we have managed to win through. I regard this as the first step towards the people of the UK getting freedom from European dictatorship,” he said.

Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary, argued that the increased support for the BNP was “a two-fingered salute” to the establishment following the expenses scandal.

Eric Pickles, the Conservative Chairman, said that Labour’s declining support in working-class areas had allowed the BNP to make a breakthrough.

“What has essentially happened is that there has been a retreat particularly by Labour but we haven't been able to fill that particular vacuum,” he said.

The success of the BNP, which campaigns for the repatriation of all immigrants and for immediate withdrawal from the EU, is likely to lead to a major re-evaluation of anti-fascist strategy by all the main parties.

we must see past the fact that the BNP wants rid of our modern common enemy, the extremist Islam, and see the fact that the BNP are oppressors of free men and the enemy of the Khalsa.

they are the same as the Nazis of the previous century, reborn into the new generation of new fascism; a new BNP

theres nothing to worry about bnp wont win enough votes anyway.

its good they are getting more votes than usual, as labour and tory need to wake up to the islamisation of the uk, thats one of the reason people are voteting bnp.
