Five men in court over Longford fight

Jun 25 2009 by Emma Stone, Coventry Telegraph

FIVE Coventry men have appeared in court following a mass brawl which left two teenagers seriously injured.

The accused, aged between 17 and 20, have all been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent following the clash in the Longford area of Coventry on December 14 last year.

Jatinder Singh, aged 19, *address removed* Sukhdeep Chokar, aged 20, *address removed*, Dilraj Sandhu, aged 20, *address removed*, Ricky Grewal, aged 20, *address removed* and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Coventry Magistrates Court on Tuesday for an initial hearing.

The disorder – believed to be between two opposing groups – is thought to have begun in Longford Park before spilling out onto the Longford Road, near to its junction with Blackburn Road, at about 5pm.

The two injured men, aged 17 and 18, were treated at University Hospital, Walsgrave.

West Midlands Police said the brawl had involved a “large group of people”.

The incident, which involved members of Sikh and Muslim communities, led representatives from Coventry City Council and West Midlands Police to meet community leaders to discuss the importance of maintaining good community relations.

Detectives based at Stoney Stanton Road police station investigated the disorder and appealed through the Coventry Telegraph for witnesses.

All five defendants were released on bail following Tuesday’s hearing.

They are all due to appear at Coventry Crown Court on July 1 for a further hearing

mod note: addresses removed as per request.

Even though we do not know the full story although we can probably guess, we can read between the lines of what the media is saying.

From the quote this means that the Sikhs retaliated and gave a befitting reply, so therefore "community leaders" must call for "calm"

I am sure that if the Sikhs did nothing then this would not have been in the news, it's only good community relations if the Pakistani can get away doing anything they want, if someone retaliates and tries to redress the balance then that means that "community leaders" must appeal for "calm"

I know all of them involved, there decent guys! Fact is, I could understand them listing the areas but come on the actual streets is a bit stupid!

Normal practice. It is the norm in such cases. Nothing ou can do. Had a friend who was involved in an altercation and they plastered his address as well. Lawyers said there was nothing they could do about it.

What exactly happen here?

Anyway it is finally nice to hear UK Punjabi youths stand up against these bullies. Well done lads(lol...you gotta love British slang terms).

Good thing you posted this story here because a lot of people on this site always negative/harsh on youth.

Can someone please explain to me why British media hate Sikhs and always take Muslims side all the time?
