Are they forcing people to consume cigarettes and alcohol? NO. People come and buy with their own will.

And you are missing the point, the video is there for another purpose, so please do not divert the topic.

WJKK WJKF

You make out as though 'Man in pugri' potecting alcohol and ciggerets are meant to encourage Bir Rass in the Naujwaan and fester some from of Sikh pride or promote Sikh bottle-fighting skills. So when does defending a stock of alcohol and tabocco warrant a saropa from the Panth or a mention that Sikhs are 'brave'....Last time I checked they were Bujar Kurehits along with kes katal and adultry. Wonder how you'd feel if the man was pimping as Maharaj's puts the consumption of alcohol and tabocco along with extra-martial relationships/visiting prostitutes....but hey...this is pardes and people need to 'earn' a living/

And then what, had the 'Man in Pugri' died in the process would we have made him a panthic Shaheed and put his picture in the langar hall..?

I can show you dozens of fist fights between Uncles at Jatt/Punjabi wedding receptions usually out of some stupid misunderstanding and over indulgence of alcohol. The alcohol which our gracious off-licence heroes provide to them.

Mala

You need to come to reality, they have done brilliantly. The two examples are great, of how to fend someone off in a sign of trouble. They were going on their gut instinct and they came of better. This rubbish about alcohol and cigarettes, it's his job, that's how he makes his living. You need to get out of your fairy tale land, perhaps take some beats, so it brings you to the real world.

Protecting personal property, jagir and family honour is a common punjabi trait, even go as far and say it's a human instinct. Standing up for Dharam is another story. People can compromise Dharam for a livelihood, people shed the kes to get a job, people start selling drugs, alcohol, tabacco, pornography etc to earn a livelihood. That's not an example of a Sikh who wants to give kurbani for his beliefs as he's already comprimised his belief.

I don't get the same level of excitement some of you other veers are getting from these videos, I can be accused of looking too deep into this and applying too much 'fairy tale' Sikhi (as someone above put it) tothe scenarios. But shouldn't one look at sitiuations with depth and apply it to what Gurmat tell us, not just shape the conclusion we desire?

very true both gursikhs non gursikhs and clean cut clean shaving sikhs need to come together as a community

as well not everyone who fought for sikhi was a gursikh, one of the greatest sikh leaders was maharaja ranjit singh, who was known for drinking as well as having affairs and marrying many women

I kept thinking of this topic yesterday as it has been so debated on here, and this thoughts came to me today that Gurujee did not judge, nor condemn Bidhi Chand and rubbish off even his thievery instantly, but accepted Bidhi Chand as his Sikh and just worked Guru magic on him and made him into a blessed Sikh and later Gurujee made him use those same skills to bring back the stolen horses dilbagh and gulbagh by 'counter-stealing' them back from the emperor's stables.

The point i am making is maybe living out in the west subtly influences our pattern of thinking making it over-intellectual ,judgemental, legalistic, condemnful and overtly critical to the point of missing out the good that can show itself in a situation not too acceptable to us, like the video of the man defending his shop albeit him selling stuff not accepted in Sikhi. That same video was watched by a white norwegian mate of mine when it appeared somewhere last year on the news of a sikh man defending his shop from thieves and to be honest, it inspired my friend that Sikhs have a fighting spirit and he compared us to his viking heritage.

I grew up in my childhood in an environment where not everybody was a blessed fully baptised rehat keeping amritdharee, though there were loads of 'sikhs' around . However there was a mutual tolerance of one another and there were common 'Sikh values' that distinguished the Sikh community as a whole from other communities, such as valour, honesty, hardworking nature, sincerity, determination, passion , sharing and self dignity/esteem. While we make our own little journeys to Gurujee and stand at varying distance in our closeness to Gurujee and our committment to rehat and maryada, yet there are certain values that ought to define us on the whole as a community. I think the person who started this thread was trying to emphasise that point even though he may not have used the best of examples.

As individuals, and as members of a family, and community we do tend to inherit through our genes and upbringing the mindset and psyche of that culture or religion, within which we are brought up and it can be later in our life that we appreciate the goodness of that culture/religion and recommitt ourselves to it. What we need is to create a positive vibe, easy access and a motivation for recommittment and for that we need to create an atmosphere not of hostility and looking down or patronising such people but accepting them ,loving them and gently nudging them back towards their wonderful Sikh-roots.

Thats exactly what Gurujee did with bidhi chand . Gurujee accepted him, recognised certain skills and talents in him and helped Bidhi Chand use them to defend his new faith for God's glory.

I think the real challenge today is for amritdharees the world over to step up Sikhi parchar, to refrain from being introverted and condemning in character, and to be play their/our role as Gurujee's saint soldiers, and to extend the hand of love and care to a troubled world. The other challenge is to extricate Sikhism from the clutches of punjabee and indian culture through a process of brave self- introspection as well as learning from non punjabee sikhs that are beginning to emerge now, not burdened with the inherited tendencies, ethics and moral values or mindset of punjabee or indian culture.
