houmai naavai naal virodhh hai dhue n vasehi eik t(h)aae ||

Ego is opposed to the Name of the Lord; the two do not dwell in the same place.

haumY ivic syvw n hoveI qw mnu ibrQw jwie ]1]

houmai vich saevaa n hovee thaa man birathhaa jaae ||1||

In egotism, selfless service cannot be performed, and so the soul goes unfulfilled. ||1||

har chaeth man maerae thoo gur kaa sabadh kamaae ||

O my mind, think of the Lord, and practice the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

hukam ma(n)nehi thaa har milai thaa vichahu houmai jaae || rehaao ||

If you submit to the Hukam of the Lord's Command, then you shall meet with the Lord; only then will your ego depart from within. ||Pause||

houmai sabh sareer hai houmai oupath hoe ||

Egotism is within all bodies; through egotism, we come to be born.

haumY vfw gubwru hY haumY ivic buiJ n skY koie ]2]

houmai vaddaa gubaar hai houmai vich bujh n sakai koe ||2||

Egotism is total darkness; in egotism, no one can understand anything. ||2||

haumY ivic Bgiq n hoveI hukmu n buiJAw jwie ]

houmai vich bhagath n hovee hukam n bujhiaa jaae ||

In egotism, devotional worship cannot be performed, and the Hukam of the Lord's Command cannot be understood.

houmai vich jeeo ba(n)dhh hai naam n vasai man aae ||3||

In egotism, the soul is in bondage, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, does not come to abide in the mind. ||3||

naanak sathagur miliai houmai gee thaa sach vasiaa man aae ||

O Nanak, meeting with the True Guru, egotism is eliminated, and then, the True Lord comes to dwell in the mind||

My mind and body, my mind and body - I cut my body into pieces, and I dedicate these to Him.

Cutting my mind and body apart, cutting them into pieces, I offer these to the one, who recites to me the Words of the True Guru.

Those who worship in adoration the Name of the Lord, Har, Har - their pain, doubts and fears are dispelled.

saevak bhaae milae vaddabhaagee jin gur charanee man laagaa ||

Through their loving service, those very fortunate ones, whose minds are attached to the Guru's Feet, meet Him.

Says Nanak, the Lord Himself causes us to meet the Guru; meeting the Almighty True Guru, peace is obtained.

Har bisarath sadhaa khuaaree ||

Forgetting the Lord, one is ruined forever.

ਤਾ ਕਉ ਧੋਖਾ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਓਟ ਤੁਹਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Taa ko dhhokhaa kehaa biaapai jaa ko outt thuhaaree || rehaao ||

How can anyone be deceived, who has Your Support, O Lord? ||Pause||

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਜੋ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਬਲਨਾ ਸਰਪ ਜੈਸੇ ਅਰਜਾਰੀ ॥

Bin simaran jo jeevan balanaa sarap jaisae arajaaree ||

Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, life is like a

burning fire, even if one lives long, like a snake.

ਨਵ ਖੰਡਨ ਕੋ ਰਾਜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਚਲੈਗੋ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

Nav khanddan ko raaj kamaavai anth chalaigo haaree ||1||

One may rule over the nine regions of the earth, but in the end,

he shall have to depart, losing the game of life. ||1|

ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਗੁਣ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਗਾਏ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

Gunh nidhhaan gunh tin hee gaaeae jaa ko kirapaa dhhaaree ||

He alone sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the treasure of virtue,

upon whom the Lord showers His Grace.

ਸੋ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਧੰਨੁ ਉਸੁ ਜਨਮਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੨॥੨॥

so sukheeaa dhhann ous janamaa naanak this balihaaree ||2||2||

He is at peace, and his birth is blessed; Nanak is a sacrifice to him. ||2||2||

Uncounted millions, so many they are endless, search for Him.

The great sins are the terrible ocean of pain; the mortal is engrossed in them.

One who meets with the Perfect True Guru, O Beloved, that humble person is enraptured.

 ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

He alone serves the Guru, O Beloved, unto whom the Lord becomes merciful.

safal moorath guradhaeo suaamee sarab kalaa bharapoorae ||

Fruitful is the form of the Divine Guru, O Lord and Master; He is overflowing with all powers.

O Nanak, the Guru is the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord; He is ever-present,

live by hearing, hearing of those who know their God.

har naam araadhhehi naam vakhaanehi har naamae hee man raathaa ||

They contemplate the Lord's Name, they chant the Lord's Name, and their minds are

imbued with the Lord's Name.

 ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮਾਗੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਕਮਾਵਾ ॥

saevak jan kee saevaa maagai poorai karam kamaavaa ||

I am Your servant; I beg to serve Your humble servants. By the karma of

perfect destiny, I do this.

  ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਦੇਖਣੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੨॥

Naanak kee baenanthee suaamee thaerae jan dhaekhan paavaa ||2||

This is Nanak's prayer: O my Lord and Master, may I obtain the Blessed

Vision of Your humble servants. ||2||

  ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸੇ ਕਾਢੀਅਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਵਾਸੋ ॥

Amrith naam araadhheeai niramal manai hovai paragaaso ||

They contemplate the Immaculate, Ambrosial Naam, and their minds are illuminated.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚੂਕੈ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣੇ ॥

janam maran dhukh kaatteeai piaarae chookai jam kee kaanae ||T

he pains of birth and death are eradicated, O Beloved, and the fear of the Messenger

of Death is ended.

 ਤਿਨਾ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਣੇ ਭਾਣੇ ॥੩॥

Thinaa paraapath dharasan naanak jo prabh apanae bhaanae ||3||

They alone obtain the Blessed Vision of this Darshan, O Nanak, who are pleasing to their God. ||3||

Ooch apaar baeanth suaamee koun jaanai gun thaerae ||

O my lofty, incomparable and infinite Lord and Master, who can know Your Glorious Virtues?

Gaavathae oudhharehi sunathae oudhharehi binasehi paap ghanaerae ||

Those who sing them are saved, and those who listen to them are saved;

all their sins are erased.

ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਮੁਗਧ ਕਉ ਤਾਰੇ ਪਾਹਨ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੈ ॥

Pasoo paraeth mugadhh ko thaarae paahan paar outhaarai ||

You save the beasts, demons and fools, and even stones are carried across.

The sleeper is said to be awake, and those who are awake are like sleepers.

The living are said to be dead, and no one mourns for those who have died. ||4||

One who is coming is said to be going, and one who is gone is said to have come.

That which belongs to others, he calls his own, but he has no liking for that which is his. ||5||

He serves the maid, and does not see his Lord and Master.
