Kirpan Case For Young Boy

"But my brother what are you going to surrender by wearing a kirpan. Can't you achieve that by not wearing it?

It goes back to my original question, is this not same as wearing the thread of the Brahmans? If Kirpan has no practicality in the modern world, then it's another ritual object. As Sikhs aren't we suppose to move away from rituals."

KPhull Ji, are you acquainted with the amrit sanchar ceremony and the divine status of Guru Gobind Singh Ji?

10th Master has ordained the kirpan for all who become 'Singh' via the khande de pahul ceremony. The kirpan is a shaster (weapon) but which is only to be used for the protection of the oppressed (us or any other human). Therefore it is distinct from all other weapons. It is a tool to uphold dharma. Please stop living in false sense of security like the Jews of WW2 or the Delhi Sikhs of 1984, no nation is perfect, man can turn into beast anywhere, anytime as has been proven in history time and time again.

The upkeep of the kakaar serve the purpose of ensuring Singhs are disciplined and to serve as a constant reminder of who we are and what our Guru given purpose is. The kirpan ensures we remain brave and face injustice where ever we encounter it - peacefully, and as a last resortm physically.

Somewhere you said "we Sikhs", a Sikh is a devout disciple of his Guru, kakaar wearing Sikhs are simply this.

I would also like to add, the word ritual is being used in a negative connotation, this is wrong. There are good rituals and bad rituals, rituals govern everyones life, no one is exempt.

Fateh parwan karor jiyo,

The Canadian Government has allowed Baptized Sikhs to carry Kirpans in Olympic venues. If only Guv Arnie did a 'total recall' of what transpired in Hundustan and then India he would rethink his Veto. He needs to see what the Canadians are doing.

Its not a weapon of aggression, Its not a weapon of oppression,Its not a weapon of suppression. Kirpan makes the wearer realize his or her mission in life,The wearer does not duck away when against righteousness there is strife,How misplaced their opinion is that a Kirpan is knife!

US has very lax gun laws and a tolerance to drugs but a problem with Kirpan. Canada has tight gun laws , no tolerance to drugs and undrstands Kirpan... what does this say?

And I'm sure Sikhs living in US , when the time comes would be the first to stand up for their Country (USA).

Courtrooms, depending on country, have varied explicit and some unspoken dress codes, robes, suits etc. Do you see that as a ritual kphull? Or is that different? If so how is it different? Business environments have dress codes. Men wear 'men's clothing' even if some women's clothing would fit them better and vice versa. Handshakes are expected in certain environments. People stop at red lights and wait even when there is no traffic and it is absolutely safe to proceed. The union of marriage can be seen to be a ritual. Our Guruji was not so simplistic as to have a specific limited dislike for the thread itself.

With respect, considering that you do understand that the kirpan is an integral part of a person for many, your view is sluggish and ill-considered. You have not seemed to consider the basic difference between discipline and ritual. You have also conveniently thrown in the word “purpose” without acknowledging its scope.

All this to arrive at an abysmally stereotypical and meaningless point. Now that my friend, is a true display of the thread (Jaanou) to which our Guruji referred.

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
