Question to the original poster:

How many hours a day do you do simran?

1 or more?

What time?

Amrit vela or other?

And for how long have you been doing so?

1 month or more?

And how do you do it?

Fast or slow?

Please answer these questions before proceeding.

Hi...Thanks for your questions...See I am still a "murak" insaan and I am still learning. And the best way to learn is to do the sangat of learned people and get their views. I was listening to Giani Sant Singh Ji Maskeen katha one day where he mentioned that the best way to chant waheguru was to do it slowly so that the lips say that word and the mind listens and feels it. He also showed how to do it. And believe me it really sounded very soulful and peaceful.

So when I recently noticed some Ragi Jathas doing that very fast, so a natural question came into my mind as to what could be right way. So thats why I started this forum.

I was merely asking for other people views on it...I did not want to start a controversy over here on this topic or get personal with others. I personally do the waheguru simran quite slowly by feeling the word. But again I have understood from other people's view out here is that there is no right or wrong way. But again I admit that I am not a good sikh as I don't do it regularly or for a fixed number of hours or at a particular time.

Again quoting one of the katha of Giani Sant Singh ji Maskeen...he mentioned that the best thing about our religion through ancient times has been that we don't force our views on others but have a honest discussion about things..Guru Nanak Dev ji challenged the old mindless rituals by having discussions with people and showing them the right way. He did not get angry with people but he did that in a nicer way by going into the basics and by giving them practical examples. We should carry on that tradition of going into the basics and questioning ourself as to how we can improve things.

That was all my moto...as I said I am still a learner and was just trying to understand other people views. I thank you all for your answers. They are much appreciated and eye opener for me.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji ke Fateh

Human being jeeo great topic and indeed that needs vital attention especially from our kirtanias out there who are doing superfast naam simran. My question is the same as yours Gurbani mentions: "Sehaj belovoo jasee tatt na jaeee" (apologies for spelling mistakes) then why are not doing in sehaj?. This question was recently asked to keertani Bhai Kulatar Singh son of keertani bhai Avtar Singh. He answered and advised that in his experience from his father and other previous great kirtani there is nothing wrong in doing naam simran while kirtan. However,it should be slow, we're mentioning our eternal Father's name "Waheguru", he asked the question to the sangat if your father was standing right in front of you would you call out as fast as some jathas do in this current climate!!!?

It's understandable that some kirtani obtain maha rass while doing naam simran and do it really fast but it begs the question whose responsibility is to connect the sanagat?? the Guru's kirtani isn't it?? What are the probablitlites of the sangat being connecting to naam simran when done real fast or slow?? It's obvious if done slowly the probablities of those connected would be higher.

And a final note tawla and shanees, vajas and any other instrument being played during Gurbani kirtan /naam simran should be of low tone, and Gurbani ucharna and naam simran of high tone.

Perhaps you should read some Sikh history, which makes is absolutely clear that pronunciation of Gurbani is of utmost importance.

:) I think by low tone you mean low in volume...

When dhadrewale does its, its like a well rehearsed performance.

Bless your cotton little white socks Ford Capri. When you do Naam Abhiyaas on a daily basis it becomes a daily reharsal. What better performance in life than sitting together and doing naam simran. Try it some time, in between your other AGENDAS...

Dhardewale creates false emotion and hype so the sangat put money on the stage.

Do you think Dhadrewale could give a programe on Sikh Ethics or social philosophy with in Sikhi ?

At best he is a musician type.

Last time I checked, Sikh Ethics was Rehat Maryada and Social Philsophy was Gurmat. All seem to be covered in most parcharaks kathas...perhaps what they dont discuss is support for the BNP, hate for muslims and paranoia of deceptive women..best place do discuss that would be your local loony bin or the next SAS gathering at Startford Road!
