Rahul Opens Guru Tegh Bahadur Memorial

Just six months before the Assembly elections in Punjab, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi heaped praise on the Sikh community and recollected the teachings of the Sikh gurus.

The scion of the Gandhi family today inaugurated a memorial to mark the martyrdom of ninth Sikh guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur at the Singhu border of Delhi and Haryana.

Built at a cost of Rs 26 crore, the memorial has 40 plaques inscribed with the tenets of Sikhism. The guru was beheaded in 1675 at the orders of the then Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, PS Sarna, bestowed a “siropa” on Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul reminded the audience that Guru Tegh Bahadur taught us to respect all religions.

On the Sikh community, Gandhi said it had made the country proud in foreign lands where they represent the nation. He went on to refer to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh adding that he was taking the country to new heights.

If nothing else, this can and should be a lesson for all Hindus who have forgotten Guru Sahib's unparalleled sacrifice. True, it can very well be a political stunt, but it will make Indians wonder several times as to how supreme Guru Sahib's shaheedi was.

Not sure how to receive this gesture. On one hand it makes me proud, but on the other I'm riddled by my cynicism for the Indian government.

Mixed feelings regarding this. Pride because it honours Guru Ji but loathing because of the Congress element.

I'm quite cynical about the intentions of this.

I don't think you're respecting someone just by building a big memorial, it's one thing to show respect for Guru Sahib ji's sacrifice for humanity through actions and then it's one thing to turn it into a simple "memorial".

Money and a memorial doesn't do much in terms of information. If they wanted to show love for Guru's they would respect their Sikhs and rid Punjab of corruption, drugs, alcohol and the media that is trying to wipe Sikhi off the face of India- something that my cynical side wants to say thatcentral is helping promote in Punjab.

Perhaps whilst he was there...he had time to reflect on the irony.....The irony of his fathers friends and supporters trying to burn down the gurdwara built on the spot Guru Tegh Bahadur was martyred.
