What are your opinions on a Sikh Awareness Month similar to the Islam Awareness Week which takes place every year. I think it is almost necessary. It will create interest in Sikhi from the outside as well as creating pride for current Sikhs. What sort of things could it consist of?

Maybe a few information stalls throughout central london for passer bys to learn about sikhi (run by volunteers)

Talks and discussions at local halls and centres

What are your thoughts, ideas and views?

This is a very good idea. We should have stalls with refreshments and things about sikhi we could also have flyers and we hand them our. Also we could go to the people in your neighbourhood and tell them about sikhi. If you live i a place where there os alot of goray

Well like or not but the riot coverage and particularly Sangat TV has created a fantastic level of interest and awarenes of sikhi among the wider population. There couldn't have been a better time to have a Sikh Awareness Month. You just gotta build on the exposure we have now. At the moment the wider population seem to be interested in the aspect of social justice and standing up for the vulnerbale. Perhaps we need to highlight those aspects from our history. perhaps even about being the natural policeman of order. Forexample you could include bits about the Sikhs became the policeman of order in British territories such as in China....Singapore etc. Perhaps even about how hard work ethic. The calvanists and Amish etc have done well by stressing the hard work ethic of their faith......We should also stress these important aspects. What i've noticed in previous things such as 'sikh awareness month' etc is that the sikhs tell non-sikhs about our prayers, hymms, songs, religious stories etc as if the non-sikh person came there with a pre-knowledge of sikhs ready to make the big jump into the theology of sikhism. But....that is not how things work in the real world. First, people have an interest in the people...the society that are sikhs. Its only when we've got them taking an interest in us as people that they will start to show an interest into the religion.

Very true, good and valid points. Particularly about how we should strike a balance between talking about the religion and talking about the people of the religion.

fantastic idea, should be coordinated by a higher body though (akal takhth), so that there is consistency in the parchar. on a grassroots level much of the parchar could be taken by university sikh societies.

True, a lot of it could be instigated through University Sikh Societies.
