can anyone do this? What if we live in Scotland, or Bradford?

Anyone can do it, you don't need to be there in Leicester, in the Guru Tegh Bhaudur Gurdwara sahib, there just doing a test too look for a match. Not 100% sure how it works.but I thinks it a bone marrow match that is needed, not sure how they find it i.e. saliva, blood etc. Just get in contact with anthony Nolan trust they will give you exact info of what you need to do. It is very quick and it is not very painful BUT IT MAY SAVE A LIFE.

Our community doesn't take part in these activities unless it affects them directly. As Sikhs we are to Das Vand, Vand Shako and Kirat Karoo. Well by helping like this fulfills all duties of a sikh and more.Sikhs esp. younger generation need to start getting invovlved in these things and even giving blood etc. It is a fact Asian's are build differently to Whites so the body requires slightly different things Im no doctor, BUT please help out when a fellow Sikh ask's, they will be forever indebted and there live will be saved not just theres but wife, kids, parents, siblings list is endless. If you can help PLEASE do. Check out http://www.anthonynolan.org/ Rab Rakha paaji Waheguru ji dee kirpa nall sab kuch teekh hornah.

Sikh bone marrow donor event attracts 600 in Leicester

Leicester, UK: More than 600 potential bone marrow donors have provided saliva samples at an event in Leicester to help a police officer who has cancer.

The event was held at the Sikh gurdwara on East Park Road for Rik Basra, who was diagnosed two years ago with acute myeloid leukaemia.

Organisers said there had been a good response from the community.

The best match for Mr Basra, who needs a transplant, is likely to be an Asian male aged between 18 and 30. Only 4% of people from an Asian background are currently registered as potential donors.

Jenner Large, from the Anthony Nolan Trust, said the event had been very succesful and she was hopeful of holding more in other areas.

She urged people to register online at the Anthony Nolan Trust’s website.

She added that one of the reasons why people were reluctant to join the donor register was a lack of understanding about the process, which she said was no worse than giving blood.

Mr Basra’s wife Kas said she was delighted that the message about a shortfall of Asian donors was finally getting through to the local community.

PRESS RELEASE!

The best Christmas present ever for Inspector Rik Basra.

A seriously ill police officer has received one of the best Christmas presents ever.

...

Inspector Rik Basra has, for many months, been battling against acute myeloid leukaemia. His long term hope as been to identify a bone marrow donor. Today, Rik has received the news he has been longing to hear - that a matching bone marrow donor has been found.

Rik is now in hospital being prepared for the bone marrow transplant, which is hoped will take place in the next few days.

Rik's wife, Kas Basra said: "We cannot believe this miracle. We have all prayed and worked so hard for this moment and we can't believe it is now happening. Although Rik still has to undergo the transplant and has a long recovery ahead of him, he now has a chance of life and that is fantastic. This is the greatest Christmas present we could have ever wished for."

Over the past few months, many of Rik's family, friends and colleagues have undertaken a number of donor giving and awareness raising events to support Rik and many other people suffering from blood cancers. More than 750 people attended two donor sessions held at Leicester's Diwali celebrations and at the Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara on East Park Road. Many more people have registered on line following the awareness raising campaign.

Kas added: "I would like to personally thank everyone, including the charity Anthony Nolan, for the overwhelming support we have received throughout this anxious time. The biggest thanks must go to the consultants, doctors and nurses at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, who have and continue to care for Rik. Without their support, none of this would have been possible."

    • So I wrote this thread out a few years ago, And Im going through the same same thing again, In the end I did email her it was an embarassing mess. This is how it started 5 years a go, I had a dream about her and when I woke up the first thing I said was Waheguru, I didnt feel right in my heart or my head, felt like there was somehing pulling me or not letting me sit still. Then I had another 4 dreams one day after the next. After a while I did email her, it was embaressing, a complete mess, I cant describe to you how bad it was.  I didnt tell her about the dreams it sounded weird like I was losing my mind, tbh it probably still came across like that.   In the end I knew something was not right with me, And I got up and went to India, to matha tekh at the Gurudwara, I went to see Mahapuhrsh[SP]. I showed them a photo of her, and to keep it simple they told me she didnt have a good heart. But when I saw them it felt like a huge weight was being lifted off me.  It took me about 2 years to sort of get myself back to how I was. At the time I was under a lot of pressure because I was buying a business and I had 30 day completion, and I was really stressed out, I think I had or was on the verge of a mental breakdown. Anyway time passed and then last year my dad died, he was 59 and just went instantly, spent the day with him at work, and he went home my mum was getting him food and by the time she went to tell him his food was ready he had passed away. I have found coming to terms with this very hard, I feel like he was stolen away from us. I dont understand what need there was for him to go. I know he was fed up, the world had drunk enough of his blood.  Anyway way last Friday I woke up again after having a dream about her, And again I been typing out emails, Ive deleted them because I dont want to do another round of doing my besthi. I am buying a house at the moment so I can move mum closer to me as I need to take care of her now. I am feeling the pressure, Im the only man left in my family now. I feel like its all on me, and Im going to <banned word filter activated> up everything my dad made. Basically I think somone has done something to me. I know I probably sound like Im losing my mind, and I probably am. But Im closer to the end than I am to the beginning, there not enough time left to keep making mistakes and recovering from them. I keep saying to God just tell me what you want and Ill give it to you, what ever it is I dont mind, what ever you want I will happily give to you. cant believe he wants me to commit a sin, or do something I know I shouldnt be doing.
    • So we find out who killed Hardeep Singh Nijjar. What we are going to do about it?  Me personally I try to avoid the whole Khalistan fiasco since religion and politics get mixed. That's a messy situation to be in.
    • *bump I firmly believe that one quote in regards to cannabis is not written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji (O'lord the fear of thee). B/c nasha is nasha. But cannabis is a bit a different since it was used for medicinal purposes in India also.
    • I feel gurdwaras are maybe somewhat getting back to their functions as dharmsalas containing schools and learning centres. With panjabi schools, gurmat classes, santhiya, martial arts, keertan training, with sikhi camps occasionally in towns, there is somewhat some functions connected to traditional gurdwaras of the past.
