Cultural .. not really anything to do with religion and we celebrated both .. girls just been born in our family and a bigger fuss has been made when the boys were born ...

the Question is why people still see girls in a neg view .... equal rights have been given people still need to be educated ..

What is the cultural significance, if any? Where did it orginate from? Why was it started?

I dunno, I went to 2 lodhis this year, both were for girls....equality is showing its head, but the funny part was they were both "monah" couples.

Gursikhs don't celebrate Lodhi as there Guru told them, so there is no reason for them to have parties for any gender. Instead Gursikhs teach Sikhi to there kids and everyday is a celebration when Gurbani is being read to the young boy or girl.
