Fair enough you could not contact a member of the Sikh community so contacted a member of the Hindu community. You made it clear they are not the same but you stated it is an Sikhism is an offshoot of the Hindu religion. Just to clarify things up it is NOT.

The easiest way to do this is by an example which you will understand. It is the equivilant of saying Christianity is an offshoot of Judaism. Just because Mary and Joseph followed Judaism prior to Jesus Christ birth it does not make Christianity an off shoot religion of Judaism.

Banerjee seems to be a Bangali, and Bengali don't like calling themselves by a derogatory word "Hindu", this guy does not know his identity - a Bengali, he is just looking for cheap publicity, and probably fetch some quick money and power in politics, does not seem to be a skilled guy to earn money through technical/management skills.
