True, Sikhs need to preserve the Punjabi language as much as possible. For Sikhs in the west, read as many books as you can in Punjabi to get a good grasp of the language. Make an effort. Promote the language by speaking Punjabi with your children, so atleast they will know the language. Children will learn English even in schools so no need to speak English with them at home, but if you don't speak Punjabi with your children at home they will not learn Punjabi from outside and consequently they will lose touch with Punjabi.

Knowing Punjabi(or any other north Indian language) has the added advantage that you will be better equipped to understanding Gurbani, Bhai Gurdas Dhiyan varan.

Do Santhea and learn how to read and pronouce Bani correctly. Bhai Baldeep Singh Ji holds classes at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick Thursday and Friday evenings. Also at Guru Har Sahib Gurdwara West Bromwich on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

I don't get it that how sikh "punjabi" (gurmukhi in writing) sounds familiar and same as of pakistani "punjabi" (urdu in writting)

Same language different script. Lahore and Amritsar used to be the same/sister cities and are fairly close together.

Sindh is written in gurmukhi too I think, but many are switching to devanagri or w.e it called.
