Revive Nanakshahi calendar: Sikh bodies

Amritsar, November 19

The Sikh clergys decision to change the date for celebrating Guru Gobind Singhs birth anniversary from December 28 to January 7 has revived the Nanakshahi calendar row. Some organisations have questioned the move while others have renewed the demand for reverting to the original Nanakshahi calendar.

Bibi Kiranjot Kaur, SGPC member, said it was time that the controversy was resolved once and for all. The community must decide whether it wants to follow the Bikrami calendar or the original Nanakshahi calendar. You cannot hold deliberations every year to decide Gurpurb dates, she said.

Bibi Kiranjot said the two-member panel comprising SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa had ignored technical aspects while amending the original Nanakshahi calendar.

Former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti said the matter should be reconsidered. He said if there were any shortcomings in the original Nanakshahi calendar, these should be removed with the help of Sikh intellectuals.

Harvinder Singh Sarna, SAD (Delhi) general secretary, said the Nanakshahi calendar came into being after intense deliberations and there was no clash of Gurpurb dates. He accused the Sikh clergy of double speak. When my brother Paramjit Singh Sarna used to celebrate Gurpurbs as per the original calendar, he was dubbed anti-Panthic. Where does the clergy stand now, he asked.

American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC) coordinator Pritpal Singh said the implementation of the original calendar could end the confusion. He said Akal Takht must convene a meeting of Sikh organisations to resolve the issue.

DSGMC to celebrate Gurpurb on Dec 28

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Manjeet Singh GK said though there were many discrepancies, Akal Takht was supreme and its decision should be accepted by all. He, however, said the DSGMC would celebrate Gurpurb on December 28 as it had already reserved the Lakhi Shah Vanjara Hall for the event.

Dal Khalsa criticises Akal Takht Jathedar

Says Gurpurb row has divided Panth

Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, November 19

The Dal Khalsa today criticised the Akal Takht chief for creating confusion over the birth anniversary of the Tenth Guru. As per the amended Nanakshahi calendar, the anniversary falls on Jauary 7, 2015. Party spokespersons Kanwar Pal Singh, Dr Manjinder Singh and Ranbir Singh said instead of bringing about oneness, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh had created divisions in the Panth.

According to the Nanakshahi calendar introduced on March 14, 2003, Guru Gobind Singh's Gurpurb falls on January 5. They appealed to the Jathedar to revert to the original calendar to end divisions within the Panth and not become a part of SAD's "divisive" politics.

On BJP leaders criticising Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, they said: The Badals dont deserve any sympathy. They ditched the Sikhs to capture power, that too at the cost of Sikh interests and aspirations.

Urging the Sikhs not to associate themselves with the RSS and its offshoots, the Dal Khalsa leaders said on assuming power at the Centre, "they have changed their strategy, surcharged the atmosphere with their fanatic ideology and adopted power politics to fulfil their agenda of making India a Hindu nation. They said the RSS-BJP were hell-bent on making inroads into Sikh-dominated areas.

Akal Takht, SGPC pass the buck on calendar row

Pak gurdwara panel willing to take initiative for resolving the controversy

Amritsar, November 20

Though the SGPC and Akal Takht today said in unison that the confusion caused by Nanakshahi calendar row should end, they appeared to be passing the buck on initiating corrective measures. However, both of them didn't rule out the possibility of further amendments to the Nanakshahi calendar.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said, "We would certainly like this confusion to end so that we don't have to change Gurpurb dates in future. We have also kept a provision for making further amendments."

He, however, said they had received no suggestions till now. He also made it clear that the two-member panel comprising SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, which was constituted for making amendments to the calendar a few years ago, would have to take the initiative, if any changes were to be made.

Makkar threw the ball in Akal Takht's court saying "whatever Akal Takht decides on the issue will be acceptable to us. We have always acknowledged the supremacy of Akal Takht."

On the other hand, the newly constituted team of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) is contemplating to hold a "World Sikh Convention" at Nankana Sahib to deliberate on the issue.

Talking to The Tribune on the phone from Pakistan, PSGPC member Gopal Singh said they were to hold the convention alongside Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations early this month, but could not do so because some key Sikh leaders from Indian and Germany could not reach Pakistan due to visa issues. He said they would soon announce a fresh date for the convention.

The Sikh leaders in Pakistan plan to extend an invitation to the Jathedars of all five Takhts, besides key Sikh organisations like the SGPC and the DSGMC for the convention. Former PSGPC president Bishen Singh said, "We may be having our differences with the SGPC over the calendar issue, but we would welcome them to air their views. We will also be sending invites to Sikh leaders in countries like the USA, the UK, Canada and even Afghanistan. We wish to bridge the divide in the community and work for the unity of Sikhs across the globe."

The PSGPC follows the original Nanakshahi calendar, while the SGPC follows its amended version.

In the past, the SGPC and the PSGPC had been at loggerheads over the Nanakshahi calendar row.

If 'leaders ' can not /will not put their heads above the parapet maybe the best thing is to put it to worldwide sangat after putting pros and cons of both bikrami and Nanakshahi calendars , the fact that the sangat is ultimately the ones who will uphold the gurpurabs and shaheedi diwases. The advantadge is, the Guru Panth will make the decision and all will have to stand be it as in old times. If they, the 'leaders' fail to do so, They will show themselves to be thinking themselves above Gurus in status and thus not worthy of listening to.

there are no cons of bikrami , if guru ji wanted they could have made separate calander

I understood that due to it's movement there will be a period when Guru Gobind SIngh ji's gurpurab will not be celebrated as it will not exist

also the fact that the slow movement across time the main dates for us as a Panth will not longer fall in the correct seasons

Why are we letting this happen? the Nanakshahi calendar while not perfect (nothing ever is ) was the closest we got to maintaining seperate , unchanging dates for our commerative dates EVERY YEAR without having to go to Hindu lunar calendars to confirm if and when we celebrate the life and times of our Gurus and shaheeds. Guru ji told us to be independent of outside influence so why are we going backwards and falling back into old crazy ways?

This year SGPC and Akal Takht have declared that Guru Teg Bahadur ji's shaheedi diwas can be celebrated on three different dates (personally I think every day to the year should commemerate our panth's glory) This year they have also screwed around with Guru Nanak Dev ji's Gurpurab as well meaning confusion for those Sikhs who were trying to go to Pakistan in getting permissions, and now we will celebrate our Father's prakash twice in one year and not Next????

The current level of confusion was not there in the year of the introduction of Nanakshahi calendar 2003 so how comes this year has been so disastrous could it have more to do with RSS and BJP meddling now they are in power and their paltu kootey are now trying to show loyalty by messing up sangat ?

If we go back to 2003 version and accept only the tradition of celebrating Guru Nanak's prakash diwas on the date of the full moon as per gurbani , surely that would be better than this almighty mess?

A letter to SGPC, from Belgium which talks about faults of Purewal calender:

About the calendar controversy

The Nanakshahi calendar which was implemented in 2003 is based on the solar chart
It has fixed dates of all Gurpurbs except three
Prior to the Nanakshahi calendar, Sikhs folowed the Bikrami calendar, which is based on the lunar chart - Gurpurbs dates kept changing every year as per this calendar
The Nanakshahi calendar was rejected by Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, Takht Sri Patna Sahib and the Sant Sama
The amended calendar came into being in 2010
As per the amendments, the Sikhs reverted to the Bikrami calendar for observing all Gurparbs
Therefore, the amended version is a mix of the original Nanakshahi calendar and the Bikrami calendar
Pal Singh Purewal, the architect of the original Nanakshahi Calendar, had warned of these issues

some explanation for bikrami calender for those who dont know

A Bikrami, or Desi year, is named after king Vikramaditya and starts in 57 B.C. The calendar has two elements: lunar and solar. The calendar starts with the lunar month of Chetar which starts during March, or the start of Spring, and consists of 365 days. Many states of India have Chetar as the new year. In places such as Sindh and Kerela, the new year starts in Chetar.

The solar element starts with the solar month of Vaisakh during April. Some states of India begin their calendar with the solar new year. In Punjab and Bengal, the solar element of the calendar starts with Vaisakh and the first day is the Vaisakhi new year in Punjab and the Pohla Boshakh (new year) in Bengal.

Nine of the solar months consist of 30 days, one are of 31 (Visakh) and other two (Jeth, Asadha) are of 32 days. This calendar is in traditional use in Punjab (both in India and Pakistan). Later the use was changed to other calendars including the Islamic calendar, the Nanakshahi calendar and the Gregorian Calendar.

Solar calendar

The table below starts the calendar from the Solar month of Vaisakh.

The names of months are

S.No. Solar Month Name Duration 1. Visakh (Besakh) Mid of April to Mid of May 2. Jeth Mid of May to Mid of June 3. Harh Mid of June to Mid of July 4. Sawan Mid of July to Mid of August 5. Bhadon (Bhadhray) Mid of August to Mid of September 6. Asooj (Assun) Mid of September to Mid of October 7. Kattek (Kattun) Mid of October to Mid of November 8. Maghar Mid of Novemberto Mid of December 9. Poh Mid of December Mid of January 10. Magh Mid of January Mid of February 11. Phaggan Mid of February to Mid of March 12. Chetar Mid of March to Mid of April

A day consists of 8 Peh'r/Pahars, every Peh'r/Pahar equals to 3 hours of the modern clock. These Pahars are named: 1: Sajar vela or Sver vela = Morning/Day-break (6'o clock to 9'o clock). 2: Dhammi vela = Pre- noon time(9'o clock to 12'o clock). 3: Paishee vela = Noon(12'o clock to 3'o clock). 4: Deegar vela = Afternoon(3'o clock to 6'o clock). 5: nimasheen/namashan vela = Sunset + Evening + Early hours of night(6'o clock to 9'o clock). 6: Kuftain vela = Pre-midnight time (9'o clock to 12'o clock). 7: Adh Raat vela = Midnight to 3'o clock (12'o clock to 3'o clock). 8: Sarghee vela = Pre Dawn/Very early morning before the sunrise(3'o clock to 6'o clock). The word vela which may be spelled as vailaa means "time of the day" whereas the word Adh means half. While 'dowpahar/dowpeh'r' denotes noon time; and 'shikardowpehr' when sun is right on the heads.

Lunar calendar

The following is the lunar calendar based on the new month starting on the day after a full moon[4] (as in the Punjabi calendar).[5]

The following table gives the dates of the new months for 2014/2015

S.No. Lunar Month Name Date 1. Chetar 17 March 2014 2. Visakh (Besakh) 16 April 2014 3. Jeth 15 May 2014 4. Harh 14 June 2014 5. Sawan 13 July 2014 6. Bhadon (Bhadhray) 11 August 2014 7. Asooj (Assun) 10 September 2014 8. Kattek (Kattun) 9 October 2014 9. Maghar 7 November 2014 10. Poh 7 December 2014 11. Magh 6 January 2015 12. Phaggan 4 February 2015

A lunar year consists of 12 months. A lunar month has two fortnights. The lunar days are called "tithis". Each month has 30 tithis, which may vary from 20 – 27 hours. During the waxing phases, tithis are called "shukla" or the bright phase — the auspicious fortnight, beginning with the full moon night called "purnima". Tithis for the waning phases are called "krishna" or the dark phase, which is regarded as the inauspicious fortnight.

From the information coming out from those involved in making the current calendar, they state that they were ordered by Badal to change the seperate Sikh calender. The RSS are the chief culprits behind this move to remove the Sikh identity and align with the Hindu one. You can't blame the British for this.

How can you state or come to conclusion that purewal's calendar is without fault?

If countless mahan sikh roops of past few centuries didnt find any fault or mind bikrami (non-hindu) calendar then why yesterday born folks felt the need to change the calendar.

    • as long as no major panthic figure lays ungli on them lol  implausible at current state of affairs  we can have three sets shrimoni akali panth panj pyare of sikh sarbat khalsa along with 5 mukte and 25 mahakaali/giani singhs a mukhi of a really major dal (budha dal, taksal, akj, nkj, all the new ones lol) arent allowed to be in panj pyare or ppanj mukte  panj pyare can have more politically involved sikhs, meanwhile panj mukte be more panthic type folks like late bhai jugraj singh  one seat of panj mukte reconsidered every 2-4 years (some seats for 3, some for 4, one for 2) two of panj pyare for life till removed by 21 or more of mahakaal/giani (scholars, veterans, raagis, etc.) (i dont know how these are selected but perhaps a combination unanimously approved by 40 legislators mentioned below, they can be for life) other three chosen every 4-5 years by panj mukte  panj mukte advise panj pyare in joint session under a mukh diwan and meet diwan (chief minister of joint panj pyare/panj mukte session, secretariat minister of mahakaal assembly) who try to set up meetings and agenda and are chosen by small body of 40 legislators (need 37 or more to become) representing different parts of world and india and punjab and sampardiye that can be removed only if other 28 or more demand so  52 sewadars of sarbat khalsa enforce gurmattas under supervision of meet diwan third set of panch is akal thakt panj pyare (jathedari of akal thakt can be abolished) of which four must be most senior mahakaali singhs (the 25) and only one can be young if approved by same margin meet diwan is, this is like the jurisdiction that can remove a panj pyara anytime and de-ratify a gurmatta anytime  replaces sgpc gursikhs like baba nihal singh harianbela, giani pinderpal singh, that are admired or at least tolerated by most of panth are good candidates for panj mukte or panj pyara positions until we harvest a youth full of potential  a panj pyare can never be a panj mukta, a panj mukta can never be a panj pyare after retiring from former position mukh diwaan cannot be a former panj pyare akal thakt panj pyare cannot be former mukh diwan, and after retiring cannot serve panj pyara sarbat khalsa takes oath of restricting political activism to a certain region (perhaps pakistan punjab, punjab, haryana and maybe j&k, himachal, rajasthan) and beyond this region it confines itself to humanitarian relief, activism for sikh rights, gurudwara management, gurmatta/maryada enforcement) a politican isnt allowed from a another party to serve any position in this sarbat khalsa system but sarbat khalsa can recommend or back a panthic sikh up for a seat in the prescribed region  constitution (prescribing values of economic and relgiious freedoms, and promoting a federalist republican structure in india that candidates backed by sarbat khalsa must adhere to), code of honour (for scholars, intellectuals, officials), rehat maryada (mostly adopted from prior one) sikh intellectual council of free thought, free space for all sorts of intellectuals to discuss ideas, and a ultimate sikh reference library for all; presided by council of five elders (one chief elder) selected by mahakaali council that maintains order and intellectual integrity amongst this diaspora where intellectuals, scientists, theologicians, can freely correspond with each other and release findings (I wish bhai vir singh ji or professor puran singh ji were alive lol) sikh education front, trying to spread parchar in world, and impart worldy knowledge of stem onto youth in the north indian region described above (as our youth is behind rest of india)  revised anandpur da matta, reinforcing punjab's demand for autonomy, riparian rights, and additional territory (that we can get with help of our sikh education front working to spread sikhi in those areas and literate the poor with punjabi and other wordly stem sciences) we will harvest intellectuals, sikhs, and a stronger panth we would also need a team of lawyers to fight the cases in high court and supreme court for the matters discussed in above revision of anandpur matta, and maybe we can allign ourselves with whatever the punjab govt is at time in such legal battles against center for betterment of punjab i think i got carried away, maybe panj pyare system is better for individual gurudwaras lol although we can't have a autocracy with all the division in the panth either like we used to under diwan darbara singh ji, nawab kapur singh ji, sardar jassa singh ahluwalia

    • yes bibi rajni was married off to a leper by her father for her refusal to worship him instead of raam/gopal/akaal purakh she remained firm and took her husband village to village and was now thrown into a life of poverty she was married to a disabled man with leprosy and was told by her father to deal with the consequences of not worshipping him and told her to go find her waheguru/akaal purakh/raam now she carried her leper husband in a tokra basket on her head through villages and did work like a banjaras at different households until she reached amritsar sarovar she left (probably for work), while husband went for sarovar and when he came out he was cured (some versions say sikh villagers around told him to jap waheguru as he took the dip) he held onto a twig on a tree with his pinky so he wouldnt drown as he took ishnan he was cured but bibi rajni his wife did not recognize him so there was commotion to which villagers told them to go to dhan dhan sri guru raam das ji to whom bibi rajni begged for the man in front of her to be punished thinnking he killed her husband  but guru sahib told the (husband) to show his chichi (pinky finger) which wasn't dipped in the sarovar and thus remained with leper marks which proved that he was indeed the husband (he was told by guru sahib to dip the finger and his finger was cured as well to which bibi rajni believed him) duni chand the arrogant father of bibi rajni came and asked for forgiveness, and i think he had four daughters or so and no son and thus adopted the former lepor as his son  one of my favorite sakhis from childhood
