I'm sorry about the sac state comment i didn't mean it that way i was just trying to be funny

i meant to say that it was nice to see the sacramento gurdwara floats peforming kirtan (since it's supposed to be a Nagar Kirtan not a "Sikh Parade" which i guess some people might interpret it to be

anyway i just wanted to point that out and I knew since i mentioned sacramento somebody would ask about Sac State so i thought i'd try to be funny but i guess i have bad humor

i typed

(not sac states lol jk)
k=just kidding

the sac state float was very nice but when i said impressed i emphasized the kirtan and not the decorations

all the floats were nice and even if i didn't like one i wouldn't say so lol

it's not that hard to do kirtan. It's not a concert where you'll get booed of the stage if your not good

i remember when i was little they had us Jaap Satnam Waheguru on the mic and everyone loved it

there was kids as young as 5 years old and they would lead and the rest of the sangat would follow

that's what a Nagar Kirtan is supposed to like

i wasn't really dissing on the dj's playing the same stuff i was hating on the DJ's IN GENERAL lol

you have two back to back floats with dj's and the music is loud as anything and yeah some songs are appropriate but some of them were just punjabi bhangra tracks

i'm not talking about sac state's floa

t, i don't even know what they played but i just think it would be much nicer if everyone who wanted to have their own floats did so and decorated them nicely but instead of having dj's and stuff they sang kirtan or followed behind one of the floats who performed kirtan and sang along with them

they could still have whover sit on their floats or follow behind

you don't have to have a jatha or sing whole shabads or do them in raag or whatever

about the dharmic geet i don't have any objections but i remember the Akal Takht issuing an hukumnama that folks who sing bhangra songs shouldn't be making dharmic albums

i'm not sure about that i may be confused

excellent point amardeep singh, infact it wouldn't be hard at all to find kirtanis at such a big event. Me and bravekhalsa were actually talking about this and it seemed like many ppl didn't like the loud dj music, though it was still dharmik. The point of nagar kirtan is not to walk around the streets but to get together and do kirtan in the nagar!! I know for a fact that there was many awesome kirtani singhs/kaurs walking down the street so perhaps in future if anyone needs kirtanis for their float, they should just ask on the microphone! Anyway, what do you guys thinking about making a Sikhsangat.com float next year?

another thing which would be nice is if someone enforces that ppl do cover their head man.. we definately should have a parband where ppl can find rumaals on the way. Out of no where one uncle who had a hair cut asked me if I had a rumaal. THe worth thing was to see all the ladies who had chunnis but still didn't care to cover their head while Guru ji's bani was being sung.. in the pictures you can see non-Sikhs covering their heads and on their side u see so many punjabis with bear heads.

amardeep singh, dude i know u were juz jokin, i didn't take it seriously

About the ppl juz walking around with bare heads....that is looking kinda bad especially since SGGS ji is on the first float so heads should be covered in its presence juz like its done inside gurdwara. ppl juz don't know what they're doin or what they should be doin i guess. :D

and i agree about the dj's. right now dj's play dharmik songs but that day isn't far probably when all the dj's in the nagarkirtan are gonna play party songs

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa!!

Waheguroo Jee Ki Fateh !!!

The sevadars of Waheguroo! Network are sure that you will enjoy the video of the 25th annual Yuba City Nagar Keertan. Please share it with your family and friends so they too can learn about their Sikh traditions. We are deeply indebted to all those sangatta who visited locally and from abroad alike to make this event as successful as possible. Love and devotion of our people towards Sikhi can easily be seen from this video, there were many devotees who did seva of serving food and langar throughout the 4 mile span, many walked barefoot to show their respect to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee, and many others tried to take part in whichever way was possible for them.

It is very important that events like this take place because they create awareness of our community worldwide. But we have to realize that the point of Nagar Keertans or any other Sikhi related events is not just to attend them, but to educate others about our rich religious values, and we can only do that if we understand them ourselves. Otherwise if we think we are doing a great job just by coming and walking around in parades than we are deeply mistaken. It was really good to see so many people turning up for this Nagar Keertan, and it is obvious that people only traveled from far places because they take pride in their traditions, but on the other side, it was really saddening to see so many people only taking part in this event for the sake of it and without understanding the real purpose. We have to recognize that whenever a

ny procession is being led by Guru Granth Sahib Jee or Punj Pyare, we have to show our uttermost respect.

Firstly, the sangat should refrain from talking while keertan is going on and secondly, to show our respect towards Gurbani, we should have our head covered at all times. Another thing we want the Sikh sangat worldwide to realize is that it’s our duty that we put a positive impression on non-Sikhs and for this reason we need to make sure we dispose all our waste properly and not dirty the surrounding areas. When you eat a meal or langar, please do not leave your plates where you ate because after you someone else might need to use the same place. And we also should make sure that we never damage any public or private property or belongings. These things do seem small but they do put a large impact on our community. We humbly ask everyone that we help out with these events as if we are in charge of them. We would also like to request all of those who do seva of running the floats that you only project or play that material (audio/video) which will enable others to learn about Sikhi. Where (remixed) dhadi vaars/dharmik geets do hold some significance, it is really Gurbani Keertan which can help us become better Sikhs. Loud music does not only cause distraction to those who are trying to pay attention to keertan, it also remains lacking of creating a spiritual atmosphere where sangat can enjoy ‘anand’ or bliss.

And last but not the least; please understand your roots, your history and your traditions. Unless we are aware of the reasons why religious events are held, they cannot serve any purpose.

Read Gurbani, give up intoxicants, believe in Guru Granth Sahib jee and take ‘Khande Batte ki Pahul’ so we can become Sikhs in true manner.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
