Dhai Phat

 

 
If their armies take to flight, do not take it as an actual flight. It is a war tactic of theirs. Beware, beware of them for a second time. The object of this trick is that when the furious enemy runs after them, he is separated from his main army and from his reinforcements. Then they turn back to face their pursuers and set fire even to water.

ਦੇਖ ਸੁ ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਅਤਿ ਘਣਾ ਸਭ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਲਾਯੋ ਦਿਵਾਨ । ਇਨ ਸੋ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਕਿਮ ਲਰੈਂ ਇਹ ਚਲ ਅਯੋ ਜਹਾਨ । ੬੯ ।

Reckoning the strength of Mughal forces to be large in number, The Khalsa Singhs did assemble in a religious congregation. How should the Khalsa fight with the Mughal troops, As they had launched an invasion in their largest strength. (39)

 

ਜੇਉ ਸੂਰ ਸਿਰ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਤੇਊ ਕਹੈਂ ਲੜੋ ਆਜ । ਜੋਊ ਸਿਆਨੇ ਸੋ ਕਹੈਂ ਲੜੋ ਸੁ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਭਾਜ । ੪੦ ।

Those being hot-headed and brave among the Singhs, Did they vote for an instant spat with the Mughals. Those being seasoned and battle-hardened veterans, Did they advise to adopt a hit and run strategy. (40)

 

ਚੌਪਈ

ਸਯਾਨਨ ਨੇ ਯੋ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਾਈ । ਲੜਾਈ ਕੇ ਫੱਟ ਕਹੈ ਸੁ ਢਾਈ । ਮਿਲਨ ਭਜਨ ਇਹ ਸਾਰ ਦੋਇ । ਲੜ ਮਰ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਆਧਾ ਸੋਇ । ੪੧ ।

Rightly had the elders narrated a war strategy, That hit and run indeed was the best kind of battle. Confrontation and desertion being equally valid strategies, Fight or perish were indeed half as good as hit and run. (41)

 

ਹਮੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਭਜਣ ਬਤਾਯਾ । ਭਜ ਭਜ ਲੜਨੋਂ ਬਡ ਯਹ ਦਾਯਾ । ਭਜ ਭਜ ਲੜਿਓ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਆਪ । ਭਜ ਭਜ ਲੜਨੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਕਛੁ ਪਾਪ । ੪੨ ।

Advantageous desertion being approved by the Guru as a good strategy, Hit and run strategy indeed was the best policy Guru himself having deserted the field while battling, Was there indeed nothing sinful about hitting and running. (42)

 

ਕਈ ਬਾਰ ਭਜ ਗਯੋ ਭਗਵਾਨ । ਮੱਧ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਕੀਨੋ ਥਾਨ । ਪਾਂਡਵ ਭੀ ਥੇ ਭਜ ਕੇ ਬਚੇ । ਮੰਦਰ ਥੇ ਜਹ ਲੱਖੀ ਰਚੇ । ੪੩ ।

Many a time did Lord Krishna desert the field of battle, In the mid-ocean he had to sit for protection. Pandavas: to had to run away to save their lives, Seeking protection inside the Lakhi temple under-construction. (43)

ਜੋਉ ਸਯਾਨਨ ਨੇ ਕਹੀ ਮਨੀ ਸੂਰਨ ਸੋ ਗੱਲ । ਲਰਤ ਭਜਤ ਆਗੇ ਤੁਰੇ ਲਯੋ ਆਸਰੋ ਝੱਲ । ੪੪ ।

As advised by elderly veterans among the Khalsa Panth, The brave Singh warriors did obey their sane advice. Hitting and running did they proceed further, Taking shelter among the wilds (as and when required). (44)

Fascinating read!! There was so much strategy in every decision during the Guru Sahibaan Jis time, which the singhs understood during the time alluded in the above text.. We are miles behind in our current worldview, almost infantile. For example, Guru Hargobind sahib ji's jeevani is very important to understand for our community at the moment. Starting an armed force from scratch right under the nose of some of the most hostile adversaries. There were strategic moves involved in shifting base from Amritsar to Sri Hargobindpur , to Bhai ki Daroli (in malwa), to Kiratpur.

During the battle of lohgarh, bhai bachittar singh got approval from bhai daya singh to attack the Paharis at night in one swipe and leave for the chaos to ensue. When maharaj found out in the morning, they applauded their decision

    • gonna take the opposite side here and say the following; This is not comparable to the Jerusalem thing because the majority of citizens in Turkey support this and don't see it as wrong. The Mosque was first a church then became a mosque then museum and mosque again. In Jerusalem the situation is that one side of population is for it the other side is against and the area of dispute is still being used by both groups. In Turkey there is no worshippers to use it as a church no one is being oppressed if its turned into a mosque. but in Jerusalem people will be oppresed and in india with the ram mandir ppl were oppressed 
    • These weddings are like Royal Ascot for our ladies. It is just one giant peacock show. If they could get away with hats and tiaras they would. The Anand Karaj traditionally did not have a lot of people and most of the people who go to them would rather be at the reception.  I think what has happened is that typically in the west the darbar hall is a much bigger. In Punjabi typically they have never been that large. I think (my wacky theory), our gurdwarae in the west have inadvertently  have taken the design of the church. The darbar hall become long and rectangular like a church hall with Maharaj being right at the end of the darbar hall like a church alter.  This has made the Anand Karaj into a Church Wedding Service and you try to fill in as many people in as possible. The only reason a lot of people come is for the chat and mithai.  Most darbar halls in Punjab and probably rest of India are more square in shape and Maharaj tends to be more centrally located.  I think darbar hall for anand karaj's should be much smaller (which with many gurdwarae who have extra halls, they generally are) but they should may limit the number of people (with Covid-19 this maybe the case). They need to cut back on those speakers (they are completely irrelevant) Also do we need ragis at the Anand Karaj? Most Anand Karajs traditionally in Punjab never had them, it seems to be another western invention. Another western invention is the brothers helping the bride. Is there a reason for this? Typically an Anand Karaj should last 15-20 minutes not over 2 hours.    
    • David Wood has made some excellent points here about this issue.  Muslims have lost the moral argument after today. Erdegan has proven that when Islamists are in a position of power they will abuse that position. They lost the right to complain about Ram Mandir that will be re built at Ayodhya by Hindus or when the Jews will eventually rebuild their temple at the site of Al Aqsa. Muslims have shot themselves in the foot on this one.
    • I've always thought about that! Aurangzeb wanted darshan of Guru Ji after reading the letter. There could be a possibility of that happening. Imagine if he actually met Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji! How would history look afterwards? 
    • We know Aurangzeb was so moved by the Zafarnama that he sought Darshan of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. You ever wonder if he made the mistake of voicing to his entourage he intended to convert to Sikhi and it wasn't natural health decline that prevented the darshan?
