  1. Guru Ji wants us to trust Him with our life A man named Jack was walking along a steep cliff one day when he accidentally got too close to the edge and fell. On the way down he grabbed a branch, which temporarily stopped his fall. He looked down and to his horror saw that the canyon fell straight down for more than a thousand feet. He couldn't hang onto the branch forever, and there was no way for him to climb up the steep wall of the cliff. So Jack began yelling for help, hoping that someone passing by would hear him and lower a rope or something. "HELP! HELP! Is anyone up there? "HELP!" He yelled for a long time, but no one heard him. He was about to give up when he heard a voice. "Jack, Jack. Can you hear me?" "Yes, yes! I can hear you. I'm down here!" "I can see you, Jack. Are you all right?" "Yes, but who are you, and where are you? "I am the Lord, Jack. I'm everywhere." "The Lord? You mean, GOD?" "That's Me." "God, please help me! I promise if, you'll get me down from here, I'll stop sinning. I'll be a really good person. I'll serve You for the rest of my life." "Easy on the promises, Jack. Let's get you off from there, then we can talk." "Now, here's what I want you to do. Listen carefully." "I'll do anything, Lord. Just tell me what to do." "Okay. Let go of the branch." "What?" "I said, let go of the branch." Just trust Me. Let go." There was a long silence. Finally Jack yelled, "HELP! HELP! IS ANYONE ELSE UP THERE?" Have you ever felt like Jack? We say that we want to know the will of Guru Ji, but when we find out what it is, we can't handle it. Sounds too scary, too difficult. We decide to look elsewhere. When Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj stands in front of us with his sword in his hand, and says, "Let go of the things that stand between you and Me, and trust Me with your life, give me your head" it sounds pretty scary. But when we let go, we find his hands are the safest place to be in. By Kamaljeet Singh Source: jathashaheedan.com

  2. 1) The reality you mention which is not going to remain, is an illusion, is a dream, that temporal changeable so called reality, in fact is no reality at all... So to start with, first of all, it is our misconception of taking the perishable as reality, is the cause of our being lost .... The remedy for this, is to arise above this illusory creation and search that one permanent Reality, which is none other than Wahiguru Akal Purukh. Your soul is your reality, it is our birthright as humans to go after our this real objective, so that we too get out of the perishable creation and end our endless comings and goings in this creation. Our attention on the perishable, or our ignorance of that unique reality, is the cause of our wanderings as said before .... Hold on to His Light, and reach your true Home 2) then the question about remebering God .... it is indeed a blessing on us, not a burden. In the sense, that one goes where one´s mind and heart is. So, by remembering Him, meditating on Him, you are not doing Him any favour....As He does not need all this...Just as it is unecessary to lit a candle in Sunlight.....but yes, you can profit yourself by taking the advantage of that light and do your real work, which is, bhajan bandagee ...It is we who get inmense benefits, by remembering and loving Him. Cheer up man, you are currently very low...remember, however life maybe with you, but He is always there to guide you, if you just turn your face towards Him...and He is right within you at all times, nowhere outside ...and according to the Gurmat, His Simran is the real turninig one´s face towards Him, and being in His presence. 3) Why did God create us? Such a Supreme being, who has created all the infinite universes as well , do you think that He can make any mistakes? Have we stopped to think ever, the power and the knowlege He has to do all that? The thing is we are petty, our angle of vision is limited and poor, so we judge the Perfect One, within the limits of our agaynta and moorakhta ... Come on man, He is our very own true Father ...our essence is as same as He is. Just as a ray of Sun is related to the Sun, in a similar way our souls have emerged from Him, to merge in Him only ... The current state of most of us, is as, we are in a dark well, and we are shouting why are we here, who has thrown me here? First of all, let us get out of it...we will have ample time to know how we reached there, but not that by entertaing those petty thoughts, we waste our time and we die there, without giving the chance to be pulled out on the surface and know everything by ourselves...and our surroundings, even about our origin...so cheer up man, life is too short to be wasted in the darkness ...come out in the Light and know thyself ... You are free to think as you want, I will only suggest you to keep company of positive people as soon as possible, as your self estimation now is very low, and pray to Him sincerely from your heart to show you the way to Him... May God bless you. Sat Sree Akal.

  3. It's a great idea, if your going to carry a kirpan you should also be trained in its usage it's a shastar not a symbol as modern amritdharees have made it, this is a very big beadbi of shastar. Only those who meet the standard and have worked towards living a life of rehit , and have proven themselves to the panj pyarey should be put forward for amrit. Allowing any unknown person attend a amrit sanchaar where nothing about their lifestyle or character is known is a bad idea. Amrit is open to all but at least work towards this goal going from zero to amritdhari is very hard.sant sipahi lifestyle is heavily neglected hand in hand with your nitnem you must carry out physical training and lead a lifestyle. I see so many out of shape amritdharees it's embarrassing. The Gurus fauj does not have pot bellys and blunt kirpans. Fix up, shape up

  4. We should be shouting from the rooftops that Guru Nanak Dev Ji spun Mecca but instead we cower away full of doubt. We doubt our own father, how sad is that? How many were there at Anandpur Sahib 1699? Tens of thousands? Hundred thousand? How many stood up? only five. If Guru Ji demanded a head now rather then rushing to stand up we would find any excuse in the book to cast doubt. When you are at the gurdwara next time and the darbar sahib is full look around, there will be those with white dastars, black dastars, blue dummalay covered in chakara, those with long beards, those in full banas, those with kirpans over the top, those with metal malas . . . . . . but you will be lucky to find just one Guru - Tha - Piyara. And he/she will be non of the above, he/she will the a quiet person that on one would look at twice, but in her/his heart will burn a fire for the love of Guru Ji. The Bhagat Naam Dev Ji mandir exists now, and it points the wrong way but do we believe? If this can happen it was no big thing for Jaggat Guru Nanak Dev Ji to spin Mecca. Honestly guys, it is a good thing Guru Gobind Singh Ji is our father and looks after us, despite us being rotten to the core, else we would have gone the way of the dodo.

  7. wjkk wjkf i think there should be a regulation system to take amrit, so u have to meet certain requirements, by letting anyone take amrit we have de valued amrit and made it seem easy and as if its no big deal, there should be a certain criteria every person wanted to take amrit has to meet and they should be interviewed by the panj pyare, the punj pyare should ask the sikh what can they bring to the panth and why they should be amritdhari. on the siantly aspect of the requiremtns , they should know their bani's and read it to the punj pyare to prove they know, they should know how to speak/read punjabi/gurmukhi and they should know our history and they should understand the value for sikhi, also they should have a soldier aspect aswell, they youths especially, they should be physically fit which means being able to do x amount of press ups, sit ups, squats etc unless they have a reason they can't. by doing this it will inspire more people to take amrit, because it will give it value and it will give sikhs who want to take amrit something to aim for, being amrit dhari has always come with a price, why has it chaged now? ive been thinking about this alot lately, im glad someone posted this thread xD wjkk wjkf

  8. Sikhs don't need a worldly government to issue us a worldly licences to carry a kirpan since we have been given a divine licence by none other than Guru Gobind Singh Jee. Allowing a government is issue us licences would set a dangerous precedent. If one government does it, then tomorrow maybe all the governments of the world(including GOI) will also restrict Sikhs from carrying kirpans without their so called permission. During Islamic rule in India, the Muslims had restricted non Muslims from carrying weapons. Only Rajputs were allowed since they served in the Mughal army. But Guru Gobind Singh jee changed all that when He gave hukam to Khalsa to carry Shastars and gave Darshan to that Khalsa who presented himself wearing no less than 5 Shastars.

  9. Dear Palarmux, we must never forget, that whatever good or bad phases one goes through, it is nothing, but one´s own karmas. There is nothing absolutely possible without karmas...either we are sowing a new seed, or either we are reaping a past seed, but anyhow, everything is karma. Secondly, about your question of what is the meaning of your present life? Well, your life´s meaning is a very simple, clear and objective one, like the rest of us all human beings, and that is, to get the most of this blessing from the personal gift from Wahiguru to us, which is having born as humans, as per to realize Him. This human body is called the temple of the living God, where He resides. This human body is got after the fruits of countless good karmas in several lives .... So just arise above the level of mind, which is the cause of all our misery and tension in any sphere in life. This mind will have its ego hurt, and make us feel regretful, full of grudges, it will keep us sad and resentful, these are all its tricks, to keep one entangled in this world. But as said in some other post, we(souls) too are not less, we are of the very essence of Wahiguru Akal Purukh. We just need to realize this truth, to overcome all the mischefs of the mind. Once we understand, who we are, then nothing can prevent us, from moving firmly towards our sole goal, which is none other than Akal Purkh himself. Religions as such, are all responsible from keeping us away from Wahiguru. Because the Bani says only one thing, and in all religions we have rituals, ceremonies, dogmas, an endless list of outer activities, which take us farther from Wahiguru. Religion, is a latin word, which means, the path which takes us to our origin and merges our individual consciousness(soul), in the infinite ocean of Cosciousness, which is the supreme being Wahiguru. And in this sense, the Bani very cleary says: awar kaaj tere kitteh na kaam, mil Sadh Sangat, bhaj kewal Nam. Jin Har japeeya, se Har hoeeya. The Bani says, whosoever ever repeats His Name in meditation, merges in Him, becoming Him. The Bani does not say, you have to belong to this or that religion, you have to be from a particular nationality or community, rich or poor, young or old, male or female....nothing of these man made limitations upon himself... Nooo, Wahiguru is not like that, His path, His mat or Gurmat, is universal for the whole of humanity, for any soul willing to go back to Him. Just as, if the ocean has no nationality nor creed, what nationality or creed is going to have a simple drop of that ocean? In a similar way, if Wahiguru has no nationality, nor class, no creed, what nationality, which creed, colour or class is going to be of the soul? Naturally, none. All outer man made limitations, are layers of ignorance upon himself .... Other thing is, one may belong to a particular caste, land, community, because of one´s interaction of karmas in that location, but that does not means, we have lost our spiritual divine essence of Wahiguru.... Due to maya, we are not aware of it; but in reality, we are spiritual beings, going through human experience. There maybe many different sizes, shapes and colours of bulbs lit in each one´s house(dharam, mazab, karam khand...), but the light which all get, is from the one Sun, no matter where one is from, but that one Sun, is the Light of all lights.... We tend to dispute and fight for our petty bulbs, but if we just looked up in the sky(within ourselves), we all shall see the only one Sun giving its light in all directions and corners. In the same way, in outer ways, paths, Wahiguru is not to be found, thus there is darkness, or agyanta....but if we all turned our attention within ourselves, we shall see that there is only one Sun giving its light, no matter from where one is. If we could only do this, all our disputes and fights shall come to an end, because then we shall see by ourselves, that nobody´s god is superior or inferior, there is only one God giving its light to the whole creation. So as long as our search is outside, there shall be hatred, wars, and disputes. But once we change the direction of our search within ourselves accordingly to Gurmat, then, there is only one religion, only one God. So we should be a bit intelligent and abide by Gurmat, for our own benefit and our own evolution, towards our goal of God realization, namely Wahiguru Akal Purukh. One has not to give up one´s culture, traditions, customs, neither the religion in which one is born, rather live in those conditions with calmness, dignity and respect for all our fellow beings, because our objective is not outside there, but within our own temple, where He has kept Himself for each one of us. So in that way, no matter what the world says, they may slander you, due to your colour of skin, or your beliefs....but then we also know, that this will not make any diffrence now, because the objective of my search, is out of the reach of such people, and this can not alter anything from our aim, to find Him and merge in Him. The thing is, one has to be clear in one´s undertanding, then nothing can shake us. Because now I know myself, and I know the reality of the world and its people. What really counts is one´s belief, not what the majority believe. Because the day, I have to go from this world, no friends, no relatives, no culture, no customs, no politics shall go with me.... I shall be all alone, with my own karmas, my own faith, my own wealth of bhakti(Nam Simran) of Wahiguru, which I gathered during my lifetime on earth. This all is known and understood through Gurmat only, so the majesty, the infinte grace showered on us by our Guru Sahibans, Bhagats, Gurmukh janas, through the Bani, is most valued, if we follow it and work upon it, to acheive our goal, which otherwise, we may do what we want, but it is impossible. The key to sucess, is to remember Him at all times, then even bad times shall turn into good ones. But the condition for it, is to love Him and remember Him , through His Simran, at all times ....then there is nothing bad, but only His Grace, His Mauj.... The bani beautifully says: Je sukh de ta tujhe aradhi Dukh bhi tujhe dhiayi Je bhukh de ta it hì raja Dukh vich sukh Manayi This means, no matter what may happen, or in which ever conditions I may be, which are all due to my very own karmas, but, I shall never ever forget You, even for an instant. But we also know, Wahiguru is Nirankar, so how can one hold on to Him, in order to get that protection, love and bliss ? Here, Gurmat gives us the solution to it. Gurmat teaches us, to hold on the subtle form of Wahiguru, or His Shabad swaroop, through Nam Simran, otherwise there is no other way .... Gurmat is not path made by any man...it is the eternal path, designed by Akal Purukh Himself, made it known to us, through His Gurmukhs.... that is why it is the most highest Path, and the one which leads us sucesslfully towards our goal, Wahiguru Akal Purukh. And this Path did not start some centuries ago, but since He created the creation, or do we think, that the souls in in the other times or yugas, had no right to go back to Him? God can not be as unjust as we tend to be. He is an ocean of mercy and love at all times. If God is one, there can be only one path leading to Him, and this is not something private for a limited number of people of a particular place or land....but for all the beings, within them, irrespective of class, community, gender, or political inclination .... The path of Wahiguru is of purity, of faith, of devotion and love for His Lotus Feet, rest all can be well said, that all is maya or koor. Dear Palarmux, trust Him and love Him, He will not leave you, He will fill you with His blessings. Sat Sree Akal.

  11. PLEASE READ THE BELOW CAREFULLY AND WITH OPEN EYES AND MIND. Did Guru Gobind Singh worship Devi? One thing which needs to be cleared up is that fact that our Guru is Satguru Guru Granth Sahib ji. Sikhi Panth was started by Aad Guru Nanak Dev Sahib ji and all other Gurus preached and propagated words of Satguru Nanak. Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj, being tenth Master of Sikhs and Nanak Saroop said and did what Guru Nanak Dev ji said in His Baani. There is no way there can be a difference in Ideology of Ten Gurus as they are One Light, One Jot. Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj is Our Haazar Naazar Satguru and Dasam Granth Sahib is Baani of Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj. Anything written in ANY Historical Granth attributed to Gurus, which goes against principles of Ten Gurus and Guru Granth Sahib ji cannot be taken at Face value and should be seen as an attempt to pollute Pure Gursikhi Maarag of Guru Nanak Dev ji Maharaj. If there are certain incidents and words which have been ascribed to Gurus but are against Sikhi principles enshrined in Guru Granth Sahib ji, then those incidents and words need either deep vichaar in vidwaans or need to be ignored as ‘mix-up’ by Anti-Gursikhi forces. This is the only way Purity and Sanctity of Puratan Maryada can be preserved. Neo-Vidwaans (Nangs who preach Worship of Hindu Gods and Goddesses) and Detractors of Puratan Maryada (missionaries etc.) need to do vichaar on contentious topics in light of Baani of Guru Granth Sahib Ji and Dasam Patshah Maharaj. Question :-Did Guru ji take blessings of Goddess Durga to create Khalsa Panth? Answer :- No Reason - Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj was sent on this Planet by Akaal Purakh Waheguru Himself to create Khalsa Panth , The Path of Pure (or Brotherhood of Pure). When Akaal Purakh blessed Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj with title of His Son and sent him to this Maat Lok ( Earth), Waheguru ji said – ਚੌਪਈ ॥ 29॥ Following Akal Purakh’s command, Guru Gobind Singh ji bowed before Waheguru and said - ਦੋਹਰਾ ਠਾਢ ਭਯੋ ਮੈ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰ ਬਚਨ ਕਹਾ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਆਇ ॥ 30॥ So the Hukam and Blessings for creating Khalsa Panth was already given by Akaal Purakh Waheguru, therefore there was no need for Maharaj to ask for any boon from anyone else. That is the reason Maharaj gave us the slogan ‘’Waheguru ji ka Khalsa , Waheguru ji ki Fateh ‘’ and not ‘Durga ji ka Khalsa’’! Question :- Did Guru Gobind Singh ji ever worship Durga Devi or any other Hindu God/Goddess? Answer:- No. Reason :- Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj, in his pavittar Baani of Sri Dasam Guru Granth Sahib has time and again explained and declared that – ਦੋਹਿਰਾ ॥ May I not forsake You and may I not meditate on anyone else except You. May I obtain from You, whatever gifts I want. 33॥ Whatever I heard from the Lord of the world, I speak the same words. I shall not suppress the divine truth for fear of mortal men.(33) ਨਰਾਜ ਛੰਦ ॥ 40॥ ji These words of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj clearly define Faith and Loyalty of Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj, which is for ONE Akaal Purakh Waheguru and NO one else. Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj was Tenth Nanak and there is NO way Dasam Nanak would go against Sidhant of ‘Ik Oankaar’ and worship false Devis and Devtas whose worship has been clearly denounced in Baani of Guru Granth Sahib ji and Sri Dasam Granth Sahib. Saakhi of Havan and Devi Pargat – Guru Gobind Singh ji maharaj, before creation of Khalsa Panth tested Brahmins, Jogis and Masands at Sri Anandpur Sahib. In Itihaas, it is stated that Maharaj tested Brahmins twice and Masands thrice. Jogis were tested once and rejected as fake. First test was done at Parbat of Naina Devi where a Havan was held by Pandits (led by Kesho Daas or Devi Daas or Kaalka Daas, as names are different in all texts). Pandits had asked Maharaj to hold a Havan as that would make Devi Durga appear and bless Maharaj with Shakti from to destroy Mughals from this planet. Guru ji understood the slave mentality of Pandits and to expose them, agreed to hold the Havan. Nine Months passed but NO Devi appeared. At last Guru ji asked the Mukhi Pandit the reason for Devi not appearing, to which pandit replied that Devi needs blood of a Holy Being, probably your Eldest Son Baba Ajit Singh and then she would appear.( Pandit said these words thinking that Guruji would refuse giving his Son’s life and we will put the blame for Devi not appearing on Guruji) But Dasam Patshah smiled and replied, Pandit ji, tell me, who is more Holy and Pious than you? Lets give your Bali (sacrifice ) to Devi and when she appears, first thing I’ll ask her would be to revive you, give your life back. Pandit shivered with fear and started fumbling. Next minute he said to Maharaj ,’ I need to go for nature’s call and then I’ll return after Bath’’. Guruji let him go. Pandit ji and his Chele ran away from the Havan spot and never returned. When they didn’t return after some time, Guruji understood that Pandits have run away. Guruji ordered Singhs present to put all the Havan Samgari( Material used for Havan like Ghee, Woods, chandan kapoor etc.) into Havan Fire altogether. Singhs did this and a Large Flame of Fire rose from Havan Kund( due to all Samagri being thrown in fire at once). Guruji, in his Bir-Ras Form stood near the Fire and took out His Sword (which was called Sri Sahib) and rose it. People came running seeing the flame and asked Guruji, Maharaj, Has the Devi appeared? Guruji replied in Bir-Ras, Yes, and looking at his sword said ‘’ This is the Chandi , This is real Durga which vanquishes enemies in battlefield, this is the Kaalka which drinks blood of enemies and destroys them. This is the Bhagauti which protects Dharam and destroys evil’’. Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj understood the slave and weak mentality of Brahmins and Hindus as whole and knew that from last 800 years, Hindus have been waiting for some Devi-Devta to appear and fight for them. But Maharaj knew that to attain freedom, to get Justice, to create Raaj of Dharam, Warriors have to fight in battlefields, blood has to be shed and Warriors have to undergo Pain and suffering and only then can freedom be achieved. Until common man does not takes up arms and fights for his rights and freedom in battlefield, NO Freedom can be achieved. Therefore Guruji rejected Hindu idea of Devi Pargat and declared His Kirpaan, The Sword as Supreme Devi (Sri Sahib) which would bring Victory. This Saakhi has been given in this form in these Granths - Tawarikh Guru Khalsa- Giani Gian Singh ji Kalgidhar Chamatkaar –Bhai Vir Singh ji Mahaan Kosh – Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha ( In all other Historical texts, only thing which is common is the fact that havan was done, but later story of Durga appearing and giving some Boon to Maharaj is entirely different. Some writers have said that Guruji fainted seeing Chandi , others say He closed his eyes, some say they cannot confirm IF Devi appeared but have written it as they heard from someone. So this fact itself proves that Devi didn’t appear but Havan was organized. Second thing which has to be kept in Mind is that texts written 45 years within Guru Gobind Singh ji went to sachkhand like Sri Gur Sobha and Vaar Sri Bhagauti ki(Bhai Gurdas Singh) DO NOT mention Devi Pargat incident, but which were written after 1753AD start the trend, in different ways although. This led to Saakhi of Guru ji cutting Goats during Vaisakhi of 1699 which later turned into Nang tradition of Chatka, Chandi Pooja and Shastar Tilak, which is in itself a Shaktik Hindu concept and Ritual and has got nothing to do with Sikh Spiritualism). Gursikhs, taking inspiration from Baani of Aad Gurus and Dasam Guruji took up arms and fought a bloody war of 70 years and at last, freed Punjab and whole of North India from clutches of foreign invaders. If they also had waited for Chandi or Durga to appear like Hindus were waiting, India would have still been a Slave of Muslims. Some quotes from Aad Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj regarding worship of Devis and Devtas. 2॥ The source, the root, of the gods and goddesses is Maya. For them, the Simritees and the Shaastras were composed. Sexual desire and anger are diffused throughout the universe. Coming and going, people suffer in pain. 5॥2॥6॥ Gond: One who chases after the god Bhairau, evil spirits and the goddess of smallpox, is riding on a donkey, kicking up the dust. ||1|| I take only the Name of the One Lord. I have given away all other gods in exchange for Him. ||1||Pause|| That man who chants ""Shiva, Shiva"", and meditates on him, is riding on a bull, shaking a tambourine. ||2|| One who worships the Great Goddess Maya will be reincarnated as a woman, and not a man. ||3|| You are called the Primal Goddess. At the time of liberation, where will you hide then? ||4|| Follow the Guru's Teachings, and hold tight to the Lord's Name, O friend. Thus prays Naam Dayv, and so says the Gita as well. 4॥25॥36॥ Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl: The Vedas do not know His greatness. Brahma does not know His mystery. Incarnated beings do not know His limit. The Transcendent Lord, the Supreme Lord God, is infinite. ||1|| Only He Himself knows His own state. Others speak of Him only by hearsay. ||1||Pause|| Shiva does not know His mystery. The gods gave grown weary of searching for Him. The goddesses do not know His mystery. Above all is the unseen, Supreme Lord God. ||2|| The Creator Lord plays His own plays. He Himself separates, and He Himself unites. Some wander around, while others are linked to His devotional worship. By His actions, He makes Himself known. ||3|| Listen to the true story of the Saints. They speak only of what they see with their eyes. He is not involved with virtue or vice. Nanak's God is Himself all-in-all. ||4||25||36|| Sri Akaal ji Sahai Posted by Kamaljeet Singh Shaheedsar on Tuesday, May 24. 2011 in History http://www.jathashaheedan.com/blog/index.php?/archives/48-Did-Guru-Gobind-Singh-worship-Devi.html

  15. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Guru Roop Sangat Jeo, A few singhs have asked me to explain the method I use to scan Gurbani books. It is a fairly straightforward process; all you need is a digital camera with 5 megapixels or above resolution and a combination of freely available software. I do not use flatbed scanners to import pictures; somehow I do not find appropriate to turn Gurbani books upside down and then press them from top as one would normally do when scanning generic books. Digital camera, on the other hand, prevents this beadbi. It is just my opinion of course; the main thing is to give respect to Gurbani as much as we can. Ok, so the first part is to take pictures of the book you want to digitise. There is nothing technical about the simple process I follow but, following steps can be helpful in taking good, crisp pictures: First of all, make sure you have a nice Rumaalla or clean white cloth spread on the table/surface where the book is going to be when you take pictures. Your digital camera should be able to take pictures of about 3072 x 1728 resolution. I find this resolution quite appropriate for my work. Set your camera to Macro Mode; just look for an icon similar to this on your camera. This setting is important as it will help us to take crisp, sharp pictures of the text which otherwise will not be possible. If your camera has a 'grid' option on the LCD screen, turn that on. The idea is to focus center of the page right in the middle of the reference grid. It is always best to use natural lighting when taking pictures. But since that is not always possible, we can use a table lamp, but make sure that the light is not too powerful for the book and that it spreads out evenly on the whole page. I normally cover my table lamp with a thin piece of white paper to diffuse the light since the light is bit too bright otherwise. Avoid the use of camera flash. This is especially important for glossy, shiny pages as we are going to physically place the camera quite close to the page and it will end up flooding the center of the page with bright light which will ruin the output. Place the book on the table in a direction you are comfortable with, and make sure you do not change it whilst flipping the pages. I normally use a ruler parallel to the book as a reference point so that the book can be place back to its original position in case it has to be moved for some reason. We have to make sure our hands are steady when we click pictures otherwise output text will be blurry and difficult to read. So, hold the camera firmly with both hands and take your time to compose the shot. Also, do not forget to use the reference grid. These are simple things but sometimes hard to follow as patience starts running thin when digitising huge volumes of text! Do a quick review after clicking a picture. If the text is blurry, underexposed, or the orientation is not right, then delete and retake the picture straightway. It will be very painful to redo the images after having transferred them onto the computer. Most of the above tips are fairly simple but it is still good to keep them in mind when taking pictures! Software: I use Scan Tailor for post processing. It is a great little piece of software that helps to fix orientation, deskewing, trimming contents, etc. in batch mode and is farily easy to use as well. Still, follow the walkthrough below if you have any difficulties. 1. Click New project.. 2. Import the images.. 3. Set DPI to 300x300 4. Fix the orientation.. 5. If you capture two pages in one image, use the split pages option although I find capturing one page at a time more accurate. 6. Keep following the other options, till you reach the Output option. Use 400x400 DPI for output resolution, colour for the cover page, black and white for the rest: That's it really. Once you are satisfied with the output, use Primo PDF to join all the TIFF images into one PDF! Sorry if this post hasn't been of any help but whatever method you use please take some time out to digitise Gurbani books so that whole panth can benefit! Bhull Chukk Di Maafi Jeo
