UK's 1st gidha competition winners were Addi Tappa from Derby, with Councillor Amrik Jhowar during the trophy presentation

Teams from all over the UK descended on the Telford Cultural and Leisure Centre in Hadley for the first ever UK-wide Gidda contest. A team from Derby, “Addi Tappa”, emerged victorious.

Councillor Amrik Jhawar, the mayor of Telford and Wrekin, was the chief guest and handed the prizes to the winning team and to all those who participated in the competition.

One member of each team was also selected as the gidhna de Rani (folk dancing Queen).

The event was covered by three UK Indian TV stations and national Indian newspapers.

In a joint statement, they said, “It was unbelievable. The atmosphere was electric. All the ladies had come dressed in traditional Punjabi dresses oozing in bright rainbow colours and they were just full of life. Every ticket was sold out and because they were all so good, picking the ultimate winner was the hardest job.”

Mokesh and Sunita said they wanted to thank all those who attended the event and in particular the two hostesses and five judges, and their other team members Taro Kaur and Hardeep Baglee.

Trophies were sponsored by Julies Conveniences Store in Hadley.

Sikh NHS worker loses race discrimination claim after she was compared to Karate Kid’s ‘Mr Miyagi’ by a colleague when she killed a fly

    • Narinderjeet Kaur Dhillon was compared to the character at her NHS Trust job
    • She initially laughed off the comment then later brought the claim to court
    • Ms Dhillon, who is Sikh, had her claim rejected by the court who said the links to racism were 'very tenuous' and was submitted too late

An NHS worker who sued her bosses for race discrimination after a colleague compared her to the Karate Kid character 'Mr Miyagi' when she killed a fly has lost her claim.

Narinderjeet Kaur Dhillon initially laughed off the comparison to the martial art master from the hit 1984 film, an employment tribunal heard.

Mr Miyagi, a fictional master of the martial art played by award-winning actor Pat Morita, has such quick reflexes he can catch and squash a fly in his fingers.

t was not until Ms Dhillon, who is Sikh, later saw the film on TV that she felt the comment was discriminatory because it compared her to an 'old Chinese man'.

She then attempted to sue the NHS Trust at the tribunal for racism.

However, the panel rejected her claim after ruling she had made it too late and that it not discriminatory.

The hearing, held in Leeds, heard the comment was made by trainer Karl Ward during a session at Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, Yorkshire, in October 2017.

The panel heard that the remark was humorous and that everyone present, including herself, had treated it as a joke, and that she had only found it discriminative later on.

Ms Dhillon told the panel she officially complained about the comment in April 2018 saying 'the other trainer said I was Mr Miyagi after I had squashed a fly'.

The hearing was told: 'Ms Dhillon said that at a training session of 5th October 2017 one of the trainers, Karl Ward, had said to her 'who do you think you are, the Karate Kid?' '

She claimed the comment was discriminatory because 'it compares her to an old Chinese man, and because there is a separate and distinct martial arts culture within her own Sikh tradition'.

The tribunal heard that at the time however, Ms Dhillon thought that the incident was 'humorous' and she had 'treated it as a joke'.

The hearing was told that in the same year the NHS worker made an informal grievance about her manager complaining she had been 'patronised and shouted' at.

Her complaint was not upheld and the following month, in October, she was suspended due to an allegation of misconduct and poor performance.

Amongst other things, the tribunal was told she had turned up to late on 13 out of the 14 days in September.

The tribunal heard she was then investigated and sacked in November 2018 before going to the tribunal claiming her dismissal was linked to her grievance.

Idrissa Gueye refuses to wear PSG shirt featuring rainbow symbol

By John BennettBBC World Service Sport

Last updated on18 May 202218 May 2022.From the sectionFootball

Cheikhou Kouyate Kouyate (right) and Gueye were both part of the Senegal side that won the country's first African Cup of Nations title in February

Paris St-Germain's Idrissa Gueye refused to play in a match to avoid wearing a rainbow symbol in support of LGBTQ+ rights, BBC Sport understands.

The 32-year-old former Aston Villa and Everton midfielder was absent from Saturday's 4-0 win over Montpellier.

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino said only that Senagalese Gueye missed the game for "personal reasons".

The French Football Federation (FFF) has reportedly written to Gueye to clarify why he was absent.

BBC Sport has approached Gueye's representatives for comment.

Crystal Palace's Cheikhou Kouyate and Watford's Ismaila Sarr have posted on social media in apparent support of their Senegal team-mate's stance.

Kouyate posted a picture of himself alongside Gueye on Instagram, with a caption calling Gueye "a real man". Watford winger Sarr posted a picture of him and Gueye accompanied by three heart emojis and the caption "100%".

In response to Sarr's post, Watford reiterated their commitment to equality and diversity, adding "this includes the willingness to offer further education and support to any of its employees".

At a news conference on Wednesday, Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira said if his player had posted in relation to Gueye, he would speak to them. "It's going to be an in-house conversation," he added.

Homosexuality is illegal in Senegal and punishable by prison sentences of up to five years. It is also illegal in Qatar, where PSG's owners hail from and where the men's 2022 World Cup will be staged later this year.

The top Twitter trend in the world on Wednesday was #WeareallIdrissa with tweets sent to support Gueye's stance.

Gueye's stance is in contrast to the overwhelmingly positive response from football towards Blackpool's 17-year-old forward Jake Daniels coming out as gay on Monday - the first openly gay men's professional footballer in Britain since Justin Fashanu 30 years ago.

Angel di Maria and Lionel Messi French top-flight clubs wore rainbow-designed shirt numbers to show their solidarity with LGBTQ+ rights

In addition to missing Saturday's win over Montpellier, Gueye, who arrived at PSG for £30m in July 2019, missed last year's show of solidarity citing gastroenteritis, according to Le Parisien newspaper, who first reported the reason for his absence.

PSG said on Wednesday that they were "very proud to wear this shirt".

"The biggest stars of world football were on the field on Saturday and expressed the club's commitment to the fight against homophobia and all forms of discrimination," it added.

Gueye's stance has been supported by prominent politicians in Senegal.

Congress Veteran Sunil Jakhar Joins BJP Days After Quitting Party

Congress Veteran Sunil Jakhar Joins BJP Days After Quitting Party

Mr Jakhar is in Delhi and has already met BJP chief JP Nadda.

Sunil Jakhar, senior Congress leader and former chief of its Punjab unit, is set to join rival BJP days after quitting the grand old party. Mr Jakhar is in Delhi and has already met BJP chief JP Nadda. The former Congress leader was recently issued a show-cause notice by the Congress leadership over his criticism of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Expressing sorrow over breaking ties with Congress, which he called "family", he said he was sidelined because he pointed out that the party can't treat Punjab in percentages and divide people over caste.

"I had a 50-year-old relationship with congress, my family has been with the party for three generations since 1972. I considered it family," he said, claiming that he quit Congress, not because of any personal dispute, but "fundamental issues" with the party.

Mr Jakhar is a prominent non-Sikh face of Punjab and is respected across party lines. He holds sway over many disgruntled Congress leaders. Mr Jakhar is the BJP's second big catch after Captain Amarinder Singh allied with BJP. He is likely to help the party in the upcoming assembly polls in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

In a dramatic public resignation, while the party was holding a three-day brainstorming session in Rajasthan, Mr Jakhar had said "Goodbye and good luck, Congress" in a Facebook live video after scathing criticism of former party colleagues who led the action against him.

Last month, the Congress' disciplinary panel had recommended that Mr Jakhar be suspended from the party for two years and removed from all posts.

The five-member Committee is chaired by senior party leader AK Antony. The meeting on what action should be taken against Mr Jakhar was attended by members Tariq Anwar, JP Aggarwal and G Parameswar, besides Mr Antony.

A 12-year-old boy was driven almost 200 miles and housed with a sex offender by a social worker at an under-fire council, the BBC has learned.

The child was taken from his home in Herefordshire to stay with a relative in Bradford whose partner had admitted touching a young girl in 1991.

The boy, now an adult, said he had been told he would be there a week but ended up staying almost four months.

Herefordshire Council apologised for its "serious failings".

It comes after a string of failings in the authority's children's services department were highlighted by BBC Panorama, including twins who were wrongly split up for adoption after a social worker deleted expert advice from a report warning against separating them.

The department is currently under review after being told by a judge it "wasn't fit for purpose" and had "utterly failed" children in its care.

The boy in the latest failing to emerge is now a young adult and spoke to BBC Hereford & Worcester about his ordeal...

"My whole time up there was torture, every day was a struggle, not having my parents there," he said, adding he had suffered physical and verbal abuse while living there, but not sexual.

  7. Hopefully it's not more mangling of Sikhi with " Sikh" (Punjabi) and 'South Asian' culture

Birmingham 2022 unites with Sikh community for South Asian culture festival at Walsall Stadium

United Colours, a South Asian festival celebrating the Sikh community, will take place at the end of this month at Walsall's Bescot Stadium

    • 05:30, 15 MAY 2022

A huge South Asian festival celebrating Sikh culture and faith will be held on the pitch at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium at the end of the month. 'United Colours' has been organised by Sikh charity Global Sikh Union in association with Birmingham 2022 and will take place between May 28-29.

The South Asian festival of culture will include over 400 musicians and will also host the Commonwealth Games Community Roadshow. A number of sports will be available for people to try including a mobile squash court.

Aside from sport and music, the two day festival is an opportunity to celebrate Sikh history. Global Sikh Vision's head of operations Ashveen Kaur Kohli spoke about what historical elements attendees can expect at the end of the month.

“The main thing we want to bring to the events is that we have a historical exhibition. We’ll have an exhibition on the Sikh Empire and an art gallery.

“It’s about coming and embracing history. Learning different things including the different rulings of India and bringing up a timeline of history.

“Let’s not be afraid and scared of history. Let’s see the entire timeline for what it was, engage with it and be proud of the history.

“Birmingham 2022 has been amazing and heavily involved in this event. 'United Colours' is an event for community cohesion and for the entire South Asian community - but we recognise it’s from Global Sikh Vision, a Sikh charity.

“We’ve had meetings back and forth every week for the last couple of months. They’ve been incredible and we’re grateful that they’re joining us.”

The involvement with the Sikh community comes after Birmingham 2022 was criticised by Sikh faith leaders last month. Cllr Gurdial Singh Atwal had said: "Since the Games arrived, we have had little or no contact from the Games Organising Committee, we are literally missing from the Games Cultural programme, just like other South Asian communities like the Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities."

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street met with both the Sikh community and Birmingham 2022 on April 28 to address the diversity concerns that were raised. Mr Street tweeted: “It was great to hear the clear commitment from Games organisers to practical action in the next 90 days that will make a real difference for communities.”

The upcoming festival will feature Birmingham 2022 Hometown Hero and wrestling coach Ranjit Singh who will give a talk on Sikh communities links to wrestling with Games mascot Perry the Bull also in attendance All of the fundraising on the day will be given to the British Heart Foundation with funds used for lifesaving treatment as well as to raise awareness to the South Asian community.

Birmingham 2022 has been working with both Global Sikh Vision and Walsall Football Club for a number of months on the festival to ensure the event runs as smoothly as possible. Birmingham 2022 lead community engagement manager Abigail Shervington views 'United Colours' as a chance for people to get involved with the Commonwealth Games if they are unable to attend the event this summer.

    Peshawar:

Two people belonging to the Sikh community were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Sarband area in Peshawar on Sunday, a suburban locality situated in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, authorities said.

The two men killed were shopkeepers who sold spices in Bata Tal bazaar in Sarband, police said.

The victims, identified as Saljeet Singh (42) and Ranjeet Singh (38), died on the spot.

Police rushed to the spot and have encircled the area to arrest the culprits. No one has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

About 15,000 Sikhs live in Peshawar, mostly in the Jogan Shah neighbourhood of the provincial capital.

Most of the members of the Sikh community in Peshawar are involved in business, while some also run pharmacies.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan has strongly condemned the attack and directed the police to take immediate steps arrest the culprits.

He termed the incident a conspiracy against disrupting the inter-faith harmony and said that justice will be provided to the families of the dead. In September last year, a well-known Sikh ‘hakeem' (Unani medicine practitioner) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen inside his clinic in Peshawar.

A teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting several schoolgirls, police said.

Muhammad Taimoor, of Richmond Road, Birmingham, is charged with causing or inciting child sexual exploitation.

He is also charged with sexual activity while in a position of trust and two counts of trafficking within the UK.

It is alleged some assaults happened while he was at work, West Midlands Police said.

The trafficking charge is in connection with an accusation Mr Taimoor drove girls around in his car with the intention of sexually assaulting them, the force added.

The 28-year-old was initially arrested on 9 May on suspicion of sexual assault and released on conditional police bail.

Police then re-arrested him in the early hours of Saturday at his home.

A spokesman added: "Our trained officers are supporting pupils at the school and we are working with partners to ensure safeguarding is in place while the investigation continues".

Relatives of a 35-year-old man from Mallan village in Gidderbaha, who faces beheading in Saudi Arabia, are seeking financial assistance from public to save his life.

Notably, Balwinder Singh would be executed if he fails to pay Rs 2 crore blood money to a family there by May 15. Balwinder was held guilty of killing a Saudi Arabian national in 2013. He had gone to the Middle East in 2008.

Hardeep Singh, cousin of Balwinder, said, “There was a dispute between a Punjabi youth and Saudi Arabian national. Balwinder just intervened. As the Saudi resident tried to kill him with a knife, Balwinder hit him with a stick in self-defence. The man lost his life after four days of hospitalisation. Balwinder was first awarded imprisonment for seven years. Thereafter, the court told him to pay blood money of Rs 2 crore by November 8, 2021, to the deceased’s family or face beheading.”

Another cousin, Joginder Singh, said, “After Balwinder pleaded for some time to arrange money, he was given a deadline till May 15. We have collected around Rs 1.3 crore. Balwinder has also arranged Rs 40 lakh. Now, we are short of Rs 30 lakh.”

Hardeep said, “We appeal to the philanthropists and the state government to help us. Balwinder is lodged in Riyadh jail.”

Gurpreet Kaur, sarpanch, Dadu Mohalla Mallan, said, “The family is speaking truth. They do not have money or land to save the life of Balwinder. We will go to meet the Deputy Commissioner tomorrow in this regard.”

"I am unable to sleep properly at night and I cry"

Jawwad Akram, aged 54, of Edgware, was jailed for 11 years after he got a 15-year-old girl pregnant.

Harrow Crown Court heard that the married man groomed the victim between August and October 2021, even offering her parents £50,000 to marry her.

Akram bought the teenager expensive gifts and treated her parents “with contempt” by calling them, Gypsies.

Akram knew about the girl’s difficult upbringing and that she was 15 years old.

At one point, he offered her parents £50,000 to marry her, but they refused....

After the refusal, the girl went missing and her mother was unaware of her whereabouts for a month.

Akram arranged for them to go to a flat in Dundee where he engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse with the girl “six or seven times”.

Police believe that the girl became pregnant during the first week of September, shortly before they were discovered by the police.

The two then travelled to a hotel in Notting Hill, where Akram pretended that they were related.

The hotel manager became suspicious due to their age difference and called the police....

Akram was arrested and after being confronted by officers about the girl’s young age, he reacted with a “so what” attitude.

He was released on bail on the condition that he made no contact with the victim, conditions that he broke within a matter of days.

He video-called the girl, who had been placed into the care of social services, and organised for her to return to Dundee.

In October 2021, the girl was reported missing by her foster family and Akram refused to assist the police with their investigations.

She was later found at a property in Dundee, having travelled there under provisions organised by Akram.

Akram repeatedly denied having sexual intercourse with the girl and claimed that he thought she was 19.

He changed his defence after a DNA test proved he was the father of her unborn child. She later had an abortion.

The girl is now in the full-time care of social services.

In a victim impact statement, her mother said:

“This case has had and still has a massive psychological impact on me.

“I am unable to sleep properly at night and I cry all the time.

“With regards to the relationship between my daughter and Mr Jawwad Akram, when I first heard the news that they had run away together my first thought was to jump in front of a car and commit suicide.”

Five people smugglers who locked desperate migrants inside 'coffin-like hides' have been jailed for a combined total of 24 years and two months, the Home Office said. The gang members were sentenced following a trial at Reading Crown Court on May 9.

Paramjeet Singh Baweja, 50, and Viljit Singh Khurana, 45, organised the illegal passage of 35 Afghan refugees, including children as young as two and one person with physical disabilities, into the UK. The refugees were concealed within purpose-built wooden hides which were screwed into place.

The hides were fitted into vans, which were then driven through French, Belgian, and UK ports. Some migrants were only discovered after they were heard shouting for help.

The hides, which were surrounded by furniture loaded into the back of the vans, were used to conceal up to seven people each journey. One group of refugees were discovered "while shouting for their lives" at the point of being unloaded, the Home Office said.

Baweja and Khurana pleaded guilty to charges relating to the purchase of the vans and co-ordinating between drivers and minders. Baweja was jailed for six years and nine months, while Khurana was given a six-year sentence.

Harmohan Singh, 41, and Manmohan Singh Wadhwa, 57, were also sentenced in connection with the case. They were found to be the "minders" who escorted the vans and drivers, and were both jailed for three years and four months.

Romanian national Dumitru Bacelan, 29, pleaded guilty to charges relating to the recruitment and organising of drivers. His role also included booking hotels and travel around the UK and Europe

According to the college, the professor, 34-year-old Allyn Walker, will start work as a postdoctoral fellow for the Baltimore school on May 24 - at a center aimed at preventing child sexual abuse.

'We are excited to share that Allyn Walker, PhD, will be joining the Moore Center as a postdoctoral fellow on May 25,' the Moore Center for Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse said Thursday. The center, created in 2012, describes itself on its website as 'a research center that  creates, through rigorous science, a public health approach to preventing child sexual abuse.'

Walker, who uses they/them pronouns, was forced out of Virginia's Old Dominion last November, after more than 15,000 outraged onlookers signed a petition to have them removed for the contentious remarks made by the professor that were expanded on in the 2021 book 'Long Dark Shadow: Minor Attracted People.'

KHALSA AIR CADET UNIT OPENS IN WOLVERHAMPTON

The UK’s first Air Cadet unit at a Sikh Faith school has opened in Wolverhampton, with a special parade marking the turning out of its first recruits.

The Khalsa Cadets Wolverhampton RAF (CCF), held its official turning out ceremony on Saturday (April 30) for students who are part of the programme. The unit is part of the city’s Khalsa Academy – an inclusive school, which welcomes learners from all socio-economic, cultural and religious backgrounds.

The Khalsa Air Cadet contingent, which has strong links with Sikhism, currently has 70 cadets and three members of staff, who took part in a special turning out parade on the day.

Flight Lieutenant Manveet Dhaliwal, said she was proud to support the opening of the new squadron, which is the first of its kind and is supported by the Khalsa Academy Trust.

“It’s good to support the launch of a new air cadet squadron, and specifically one that’s got really close ties to Sikhism”, she said.

“Sikhism and cadets actually have a lot of parallel values, which I think is important to capture and promote as well”.

Wing commander Manjeet Singh Ghataora, said that he hoped opening more Khalsa cadet units will help to break down barriers and encourage more ethnic minorities to join the organisation.

“There’s always the barrier. We’re trying to recruit more BAME people into the Royal Air Force and the other services”, he said.

“Hopefully cadet organisations like this will look to increase that representation. Here they can see that by looking at the serving personnel that have come to support the event, and also the many young Sikh cadets joining up, that there’s opportunities for them here as well”.

The Air Cadets is an organisation, which is designed for young people aged 13 and upwards, boasting numerous opportunities including UK and overseas camps, leadership courses, air experience flights and pilot training.

Speaking of the benefits of joining up, Mr Ghataora pointed to “amazing opportunities”, where youngsters can learn a variety of skills, including discipline, organisation, communication and leadership.

“I know it makes a difference for people’s careers when they go for jobs, if you turn round and say ‘I was a flight sergeant in a cadet organisation”, he told Pukaar News.

“They get to try flying and do lots of adventurous training, so it’s a great opportunity, especially for people in the inner cities, to get out and about and have a look at the military opportunities”, he added.

New recruit Jasmeet Kaur, said that Air Cadets had helped with her confidence by taking her out of her comfort zone.

“It introduces you to new things. Normally I’m always inside the house and I never do anything and, joining up and participating in this, it’s just helped me to feel better about myself”, she said.

Lance Corporal Jushan Preet Kaur, said that joining the Air Cadets, had helped her to consider a career in the Armed Forces.

“The uniform – I love it. It gives me a confidence, and I know my parents are proud of me as well, and that’s a key thing for me”, she added.

Civil suit filed against county, SCSO officers in possible hate crime incident

May 10—Nearly a year after a Sutter County resident and first-generation Sikh American was involved in an incident in which he was allegedly threatened with a racial slur and violence and later subjected to more slurs and hateful graffiti at his residence, a civil suit is being filed against the county, officers with the Sutter County Sheriff's Office and the individual who threatened him.

According to Graham West, media and communications director for the Sikh Coalition, the Sikh civil rights organization also is urging the Sutter County District Attorney's Office to bring criminal charges.

"Almost one year ago, Mr. Rouble Paul Claire, a first generation Sikh American and father whose family has called Sutter home since 1973, was threatened with a racial slur and vehicular violence at a local store and then, in a second separate but related incident hours later, subjected to more racial slurs and hateful graffiti at his home," West said in a statement. "Mr. Claire, age 66, immediately notified the Sutter County Sheriff's Office (SCSO); but after months of delay and inconsistent responses, he retained the Sikh Coalition for free legal help in October of 2021.”

According to West and the Sikh Coalition, Claire was allegedly "accosted by a woman in his neighborhood while at South Butte Market" on May 11, 2021. The woman allegedly yelled and cursed at Claire. She allegedly called Claire a "f***ing Hindu" and threatened to "ram" him with her car. She then got back into her car and allegedly sped toward Claire in the parking lot, before swerving away at the last moment.

Later that day, a separate woman that was allegedly connected to the "assailant," wrote "sand n****r," a racist slur used against people of Middle Eastern descent, in chalk outside of Claire's house and in his driveway. She also allegedly called him a "n****r," an ethnic slur typically used against Black people.

"I have been subject to threats, harassment, and racial slurs — yet almost a full year later, no one has been held accountable," Claire said in a statement. "For months after immediately reporting these hateful acts, I sat in silence waiting for action that never came. I did not want to have to take legal action against anyone, but I believe that this failure of justice is unacceptable: No one in our community should have to face this kind of hate and bigotry."

The Sikh Coalition said Claire received "little aid," despite multiple appeals to the SCSO. The group alleged that a deputy who responded to the incident outside Claire's home "used his own water bottle in an attempt to wash away the evidence before taking photos for the office."

A man has been jailed for a string of historic sexual offences. Ilyas Akhtar carried out the abuse in the 1980s and 90s, when his victim was a young girl.

Akhtar, of Meade Hill Road, Prestwich, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment at Bolton Crown Court, after being found guilty of six counts of indecent assault. Prosecution barrister Charlotte Rimmer told the court that Akhtar, now 48, was a teenager at the time of the offences and that he abused the child ‘regularly’ over a five-year-period.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said that the first incident happened when she was a little girl. Akhtar asked her to expose her lower half, the court heard, before rubbing himself against her.

Ms Rimmer said that the victim believed there had been a ‘code word’ that Akhtar used before carrying out the abuse but that she could not remember what it was.

Akhtar gave a no comment interview to police but he admitted two instances of abuse to his brother. In a text message, Akhtar described the incidents as “nothing serious” and “just a bit of fiddling”.

Akhtar later accused people of ‘trying to stitch him up’ and during a trial, he denied any instances of touching but admitted exposing himself twice. A jury found him guilty of all six charges that he faced.
