Sikh Day of Protest on Friday 8 July 2005 LONDON

Recommended Posts

This protest needs to be very well attended, particularly by the Sikh youth.

Many Sikh students should have finished exams by Friday 8 July.

Every Gurdwara should make announcements this weekend.

Encourage Gurdwaras to arrange transport.

Media publicity is guaranteed.

The BBC and NDTV have already been in touch.

NDTV are accompanying Manmohan Singh on this trip and have learnt of this protest. Who are NDTV?

The following is from their web site:

About NDTV

New Delhi Television Ltd. (NDTV Ltd.), founded in 1988, is India's first and largest private producer of news, current affairs and entertainment television. NDTV is home to the country's best and brightest reporters, anchors and producers; 23 offices and studios across the country host India's most modern and sophisticated production and newsgathering facilities.

As an organization, NDTV is totally committed to one cause: to use its extensive expertise, experience, technology and reach to create unparalleled coverage of the latest in domestic and international news and entertainment for viewers at home and around the world.

On April 14th, 2003, NDTV simultaneously launched two 24-hour news channels, NDTV 24x7 in English, and NDTV India in Hindi, which targets the Indian diaspora across the world.

NDTV 24x7 in English and NDTV India in Hindi have confirmed they will be interviewing and televising in advance about the Dastaar and human rights ISSUES we will all be protesting about. They then hope to cover the protest itself.

Hopefully, Indian television cameras will not put Sikhs off from attending, but encourage them to attend in much bigger numbers. We sense the Sikh youth are more up for this protest, whereas some of the elders are INCORRECTLY assuming we are protesting against Manmohan Singh himself.

The answer is we are protesting against the INDIAN GOVERNMENT on their lack of real action on the DASTAAR ISSUE and on the continued ABUSE OF SIKH HUMAN RIGHTS. The fact that the Indian Prime Minister is a Sikh and will be inside the Indian High Commission at the same time as the protest provides an interesting angle and twist to the media that SIKHS must capitalise on to highlight the ISSUES.

If there are Sikhs that believe Manmohan Singh may be sympathetic - PROTESTS will help him argue his case.

If Sikhs believe Manmohan Singh is a waste of time - PROTESTS are helpful to highlight the issues so external pressure is brought on the Indian Government.

Let's be professional and disciplined in getting our message across the media.

We should have ideas for placards and banners for EACH part of the protest:

PART I - DASTAAR

PART II - ABUSE OF SIKH HUMAN RIGHTS

Please post ideas for placards and banners using this thread.

The following image must be a MUST for several placards for Part II.

There will be one general banner from Young Sikhs (UK) to cover BOTH parts of the protest, which will read:

STOP ABUSE OF SIKH HUMAN RIGHTS
