Opposition asks PM to quit over anti-Sikh riots report (LEAD)

Indo-Asian News Service

New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led opposition Tuesday blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the lack of action against those named in an official probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and called for his resignation.

"Those who have been named by the Nanavati Commission, those who have been accused by it should resign from the council of ministers," former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee told reporters.

Vajpayee said Manmohan Singh was responsible for the government's virtual clean chit to Congress leaders indicted in the commission's report.

"As prime minister, (Manmohan Singh) is also responsible," Vajpayee said.

A furious opposition blocked parliament a day after the government tabled an action-taken report explaining it would not take action against Congress leaders named in the G.T. Nanavati panel's report on the riots that followed then prime minister Indira Gandhi's assassination by her Sikh bodyguards.

As the opposition shouted slogans, demanding the resignation of Manmohan Singh and central minister Jagdish Tytler, both houses were forced to adjourn without transacting any business.

A determined opposition demanded punitive action against Tytler, the minister of state for overseas Indian affairs, and Sajjan Kumar, an MP against whom the commission said there was "credible evidence".

The BJP has announced that it would block parliament to demand Tytler's removal.

"We have decided to block both houses and ask for the resignations of Manmohan Singh and Tytler," said BJP spokesperson Sushma Swaraj after a morning meeting of party MPs presided over by Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani.

"We will not let the (ruling) Congress get away with murder."

According to Swaraj, Advani remarked in the meeting that the 1984 killings following Indira Gandhi's assassination could not be described as riots, but as genocide or massacre.

"The Nanavati report said there was credible evidence against Tytler and there was a high probability of his involvement - how can he be absolved by the government?" Swaraj questioned, noting that these were the strongest words any commission could use to indict a person.

True to their word, the BJP-led opposition National Democratic Alliance was up and shouting soon after the two houses assembled for the day's business.

The opposition shouted demands for the resignation of Manmohan Singh and Tytler as soon as the house met. Members of the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal refused to heed the speaker's assurance that he would invite everyone to speak.

The treasury benches too started shouting: "Discuss the (2002) Gujarat riots (the sectarian violence allegedly abetted by the state's BJP regime)."

When three Akali Dal MPs rushed to the speaker's chair shouting slogans and waving copies of the Nanavati report, some BJP MPs joined them at the centre of the house.

An unrelenting din continued for a few more minutes until Speaker Somnath Chatterjee adjourned the house for the day.

Amid similar scenes, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for an hour and later, for the day.

The BJP even wants the PM of India to quit and I think rightly so....the man is corrupt in the eyes of all right thinking people now. Manmohan Singh is gulity as those leaders of the anti-sikh mobs if he continues to give them support.

The BJP and the Badal Dal were in power for 5 years and they did not punish anybody, they are just making noise for political gains. The BJP feel tainted over what they did in Gujarat and Badal has lost support due to his RSS policies.

If they got into power again you would not hear a word from them in support of Sikhs.

All the Indian parties are as bad as each other when it comes to Sikhs.
