Euro MP Pledges Support For Sikh Freedom Rally

Euro MP Jean Lambert has today pledged her support for the UK's Sikh Community and the Freedom Rally taking place in Trafalgar Square on Sunday (4th June) in remembrance of the devastating events of June 1984 in Amritsar.

Jean Lambert, London's Green MEP, recently met with a group of Sikhs from the UK who were invited to the European Parliament to discuss their concerns over the ban of turbans in France and the ongoing human rights issues in India. Today Jean, who was named as the top MEP for Justice and Human Rights at the end of last year said; "The right to freedom of religion is stated in both Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion making the regulations imposed in France unwise and misguided. Such actions can only fuel divisive and racist views.

"I hope that the rally on Sunday will not only be a time of reflection for the Sikh community but also demonstrate to others that we all have the right to express our religious beliefs without being victimised."

The Freedom Rally will take place in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 4th June from 2.30pm - 4.30pm.
