Change In Maryada?!?!?

Recommended Posts

The amendment in the Sikh 60-year-old Rehat Maryada by the SGPC has evoked a strong reaction from Sikh intellectuals.

Why change it?

The original Rehat Maryada clearly mentions that no Sikh could remarry when his wife was alive. However, the amended Maryada has added the word ‘generally’ that reads, “Generally, no Sikh should marry a second wife if the first wife is alive.”

This is to allow bigamy/polygamy. Which is WRONG!!!

...the original Maryada gives the definition of a Sikh as “Any human being who believes in all Sikh Gurus in One Immortal Being, (ii.) Ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak Sahib to Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, (iii.) Guru Granth Sahib, and the utterances and teachings of the 10 Gurus and baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru, and who does not owe allegiance to any other religion, is a Sikh.

...the amended Punjabi version has deleted ‘Dassan’ (meaning all 10 from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh)

So this means that Naamdharis are accepted back now? They who rejected The Guru Granth Maharaj as their one and only Guru?

...the deletion of ‘plucking of gray hair’ from the new version of Maryada...

<admin-profanity filter activated>?!?! again, this is wrong. I swear there's a story where a Singh plucked a grey hair from his beard and was chastised by Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj for it.

I am in such a state of mind that if it were possible, and I was in front of the committee, I would punch all of their lights out. At least until they saw sense

Change in Maryada draws criticism

Amritsar, March 5

The amendment in the Sikh 60-year-old Rehat Maryada by the SGPC has evoked a strong reaction from Sikh intellectuals.

Mr Gurcharnjit Singh Lamba, a Sikh intellectual and Editor of monthly ‘Sant Sipahi’, has said the Sikh Maryada was formulated after marathon discussions and hence any amendment without taking the Sikh Panth into confidence was unacceptable to the sangat. He was here today to pay his obeisance at Harmandar Sahib.

A comparative study of two versions of the ‘Sikh Rehat Maryada’ - one of 1945 and the recent one published by the SGPC - shows glaring discrepancies.

Questioning the wisdom of changing the Article on re-marriage, Mr Lamba alleged the amendment was aimed to benefit certain influential persons who had indulged in bigamy. The original Rehat Maryada clearly mentions that no Sikh could remarry when his wife was alive. However, the amended Maryada has added the word ‘generally’ that reads, “Generally, no Sikh should marry a second wife if the first wife is alive.”

Another glaring amendment in the new version is on the definition of a Sikh. The Punjabi version of the original Maryada gives the definition of a Sikh as “Any human being who believes in all Sikh Gurus in One Immortal Being, (ii.) Ten Gurus, from Guru Nanak Sahib to Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, (iii.) Guru Granth Sahib, and the utterances and teachings of the 10 Gurus and baptism bequeathed by the tenth Guru, and who does not owe allegiance to any other religion, is a Sikh.

However, the amended Punjabi version has deleted ‘Dassan’ (meaning all 10 from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh).

Mr Lamba further alleges that the deletion of ‘plucking of gray hair’ from the new version of Maryada was a blunder on the part of the SGPC.

He also criticised a section of the Sant Samaj for pursuing its own Maryada which was in sharp contrast to the original version, passed with the consent of the Sikh sangat.

Don't worry no-one has heard of this guy, I doubt SGPC will change maryada just because one guy says so, and singhs in india will deal with it.

HMm they did that with the "nanakshahi" calender... only couple of years ago.

They seem to cahnge their maryada every 50/60 years!? @

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa!! Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

This is totally wrong, the amendments they are doing to the Rehit Maryada, but SGPC and political leaders like Parkash Badal will amend the Maryada to how they please. This is why Taksals, Samparda's and Panthic Jathebandi's are not ALL accepting it.

Under no cost will we accept thoses sects who do not accept Satguru Sache Patshah Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj as there Guru Sahib.

SGPC are not carrying out the tasks they should be doing, and Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and its Jathedar should be AZAAD not under the SGPC or Badal group.

The SGPC definatly need to start doing something about Pakhandi Dera's of ashutosh, bhaniarawala, radha soami's, sache sauda wala, darshan dassia's etc etc...

Sri Akal Takhat Sahib Ji is SUPREME but not its Jathedar, We Truly Stand with Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, but not Sri Akal Takhat Sahib's Jathedar, the Jathedar's in the last few years have had no stand whatsoever, even on Khalistan they are totally scared of the word!

The Nanakshahi calendar, who made it? was it discussed with the Khalsa Panth? Who was consulted? is this the same Akal Takhat Sahib Jathedar issuing the Nanakshahi Calendar who turns a blind eye to Khalistan? and Shaheed Families?

We believe there should be a Sikh Calendar, 100% but before it is issued it must be discussed with the Panth, changes like moving a date from the 4th of June to the 16th? Some moves like this have been created, so that when Sikh Sangats go to pay homage to Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj's Shaheedi, it was on the 4th, and with that there would be an image that on this same day the indian government sent in the indian army to attack Sri Darbar Sahib and destroy Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, and that same image of the 6th June 1984 how innocent Sikh Sangat like themselves were killed, raped, and the Sri Harmandir Sahib itself peppered with bullets.

Beware of this moves by the indian government, remember dont trust SGPC or BADAL or Sri Akal Takhat Sahib's Sarkari Jathedar!!

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa!! Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!!

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
