Bhangra At Nagar Kirtan

Actually even the best kirtan at our nagar kirtan uses dhol which makes u feel like dancing just like bhangra grin.gif

Bhainji the dhol is used at nagar kirtans to inspire Bir Rus in the people doing kirtan and Gatka. The Nagar Kirtan itself has no relation with Bhangra, or culture. The season of Vaaisakh is obviously celebrated in Punjab for cultural as well as religious reasons, but the Nagar Kirtan is a procession of Guru Ji's Khalsa, and Guru Granth Sahib Ji is leading the procession, at the front of the Nagar Kirtan. It is not appropriate to have songs and bhangra dancing in front of Guru Sahib Ji. In my humble opinion, the only type of "dancing" we should be doing in front of Guru Sahib Ji is dancing with shasters - doing Gatka and our penthra - we are a warrior kaum...

Bhangra is not acceptable at any Nagar Kirtan being held in memory of Guru Ji's Panj Pyare, and Guru Khalsa Panth. I'm not saying whether the act of Bhangra it self is right or wrong, but it's definitely not appropriate at any Nagar Kirtan, where Guru Ji themself are walking with their laadlee Fauj.

bhul chuk maaf.

what is bir ras?

i guess if theres bhangra it is inappropriate to call it nagar kirtan, "Vaisakhi Parade" is the more appropriate name if theres both religious and cultural features

just thought id mention that we had this problem in Scotland, where things generally arent as bad as in England. However, we were doing a gatka displayduring nagar kirtan, which was fine. But when we stopped at the last guru ghar, and started ardas, a small minority of "sikhs" started doing bhangra! with a dhol player.

Sangat ji we took great offence to this and four times they were told to stop, yet they kept going. Our teacher was so upset by this beadbi that he attempted to kick the dhol.

This started of a huge row, with the dhol player claiming he kicked him!! The secretary of t he gurudwara came running out , along with some others to try and get to our teacher - so weran over to defend him.

Now this may sound bad - but heres where it gets unbelieveable!

the persons trying to attack our teacher were shouting claiming - " you got to play your gatka, now let us have our fun", and also threatened us , using foul language as well! these persons included members of the gurudwara committee!

now we are banned from gatka demonstration at glasgow nagar kirtan!

bhul chuk maaf

ps id just like to most of the "sikhi" minded youth never bothered with the nagar kirtan last weekend, and thanks to guru jis kirpa there was alot less sangat, and no more bhangra!!

also a few people were saying that it wasnt good that there was no gatka!

first off all there have been bhangra dancers at the southall nagar kirtan for years, when it used to go down beaconsfield road and broadway. 1 year there were three bhangra groups, some walking and some on floats. the floats have to all go through the gurdwara.and on the first post with the nokia media link there are no dancers just the dhol players and the sangat dancing but yet you blame the dancers. bhangra is a folk dance which is linked with vaisakhi. the dhol is also linked with gatka. you dont see bhangra groups on floats with sound systems doing boliyan the just play the dhol and dance. WHAT ABOUT THE 10 DHOL PLAYERS AT THE NAGAR KIRTAN WITH THE SANGAT DANCING AROUND THEM??????? WHAT ABOUT ALL THESE SINGHS WITH THE JACKETS WITH HALF A KHANDA AND THE OTHER HALF MADE UP OF AK47S???????

I wonder if these Bhangra fans would have danced in 1699 in Anandpur Sahib whilst the rest of the Sangat sat and listened to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj's Bachans!

While Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj was preparing Amrit, reciting JapJi Sahib Bani followed by Jap Sahib, Tav Parsaad Swayie Sahib, Benti Chaupi Sahib and Anand Sahib do you really think there were Bhangra dancers present, Dhols Banging, ladies doing Gidha?!

Guru Maharaj is still present today, still speaking to us, just as Guru Ji did in 1699, yet today we'd rather dance to 10 mona playing the dhol!

Veerji,

Same goes for the advertising. I can't comment on the t-shirts as I didn't see them, but I do know that more thought needs to go into what is being put on t-shirts and what message is being portrayed. Certainly does not sound very responsible to produce something as described above!!

I saw the t-shirts described too - the Khanda with rifles instead of shastaars on the right hand side. I would like to know what they are trying to achieve and what message they want to put across in such a manner. The Khanda symbol means something and should not be fiddled with like that and then put on a t-shirt and paraded at Nagaar Kirtan, as if it is something that people can alter at their own will as if it is the Nike or Adidas symbol or something. This is 'Hip Hop Gangster Rap Sikhi' I suppose. Bana and dastaar is there for us to wear as our symbol and soul. These people who mess and put rifles on t-shirts need to think deeply about things.
