Dubai, September 2: Al Qaeda called on US President George W. Bush and non-Muslims especially in the United States to convert to Islam and abandon their 'misguided' ways or else suffer the consequences, according to a video posted on a Web site on Saturday.

The speaker was identified as Azzam the American, also known as Adam Yahiye Gadahn -- an Islamic convert from California wanted for questioning by the FBI and who US authorities believe to be involved in a ‘propaganda’ campaign for al Qaeda.

"If the Zionist crusader missionaries of hate and counter-Islam consultants like ... the crusader and chief George W. Bush were to abandon their unbelief and repent and enter into the light of Islam and turn their swords against the enemies of God, it would be accepted of them and they would be our brothers in Islam," Gadahn said in English.

"To Americans and the rest of Christendom we say, either repent (your) misguided ways and enter into the light of truth or keep your poison to yourself and suffer the consequences in this world and the next."

Al Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri made a brief statement at the start of the tape urging viewers to listen carefully to the message, entitled: ‘An Invitation to Islam’.

"Our brother Azzam the American is speaking to you out of pity for the fate that awaits (unbelievers) and as someone who wants to lift his people out of darkness and into the light," Zawahri said.

Zawahri, like Osama bin Laden and other leaders of al Qaeda -- the group that masterminded the September 11 attacks on the United States -- is thought to be hiding in Pakistan or Afghanistan.

Zawahri and Gadahn appeared to be speaking from different places, as Zawahri spoke in front of a black background.

The tape was dated September 2006 and appeared to have been recorded recently as Gadahn referred to Israel's war on Lebanon.

Gadahn appeared in the video dressed in a white turban and seated in front of a computer and books.

"But whatever you do don't attempt to spread your misery and misguidance to our lands," he said. The video carried Arabic subtitles of his English message.

FAITH AND JIHAD

Gadahn recited verses from the Muslim holy book the Koran in Arabic, then translated them into English and said Muslims needed to boost their faith to expel their countries' rulers.

"Muslims don't need democracy to rid themselves of their home grown despots and tyrants. What they do need is their Islamic faith, the sprit of jihad and the lifting of foreign troops and interference from their necks," he said, adding that God did not recognise a separation of religion and state.

"Those who think that democracy is synonymous with freedom are either people who haven't experienced life in America or Americans who haven't lived abroad."

Zawahri last appeared in a video in August in which he said that some leaders of Egypt's Gama'a Islamiya have joined al Qaeda. Gama'a Islamiya later denied his statement.

This is going to be very bad news for Sikhs living in America, not only will this confuse and draw more ire and anger towards sikhs, but this will only escalate the situation even more.

Nevertheless, I think the Mainstream Islamic community should take more of a proactive role to distinguish that Islam doesn't fight for this.

Just my two cents.

You know I think its quite serious. I know this singh post 9/11 who was filling up his car at a petrol station and was killed cos some other person thought he was Osama Bin Laden!

Also our local gurdwara aswell were told by the police to remove Guru Jis pic from the window ledge cos it looked 'terrorist'.

I think its completely unfair that sikhs get targetted and face the consequences for something we are completely unrelated to..and I don't understand why the religious leaders don't educate the general public that sikhs wearing dastaar and beard are not muslims.

Instead they are like oh right yea i suppose Guru ji does look terrorist so we shall remove it from the window. Also anyone else think its all quite ironic considering the vast arrays of muslims abroad don't have beards or wear turbans...

which gurdwara was this??

as for educating others theirs a problem their u wil lget some that are truely intrested but theirs always going to be people that think they no it all already init

It was a local gurdwara. I reckon as Sikhs we should let the public know about how we are being victims of things we are not responsible for and mere man jap I don't think their is any sort of problem there. Educating people has the same flaws as for example trying to raise awareness that smoking will kill you. Likewise this is not any different as it should be about raising awareness about discrimation and unfairness.

Like pre all this terrorist talk nobody had a problem with Guru Jis pic there in the window and it had been there ever since the gurdwara had opened.....the reason it all happened as far as I can see is due to the influence media has had on the general public.

Talk to loada people and they are like oh yeah person with beard and turban makes me feel 'uncomfortable', 'uneasy' etc I believe there are various underlying reasons for this but the most prominent being that the media continues to play tapes of muslim people like osama bin laden/al-queda type and the public are linking them to singhs. You see alot of coverage on that has lead to people having biased views and i'm gonna be honest here if i wasn't sikh I too probably would have been a victim of the media.

The fact is there is so much coverage of some random muslim person who owns a local business and does not like the 'atmosphere' whilst the real people being affected are sikhs. Why cannot someone ask for coverage about how sikhs are being mistaken for muslims. How they are being targetted and viewed by many as being terrorists. The muslims might think they are recieving the blow of this terrorist stuff but you know what the real people suffering it all are the sikh singhs. I reckon there should be a panorama or news slot about it. Media made it happened and it should be via media that the same people are targetted again to change it..I don't know how to do this but the leaders of our faith obviously have the ability to make this change.

good idea penj thing is will panorama or sumink wna cover something like this just yet?? usually it takes a cupla lives b4 they even start realising it

if something like this is done soon it is of great benefit 2 sikhs

    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
    • Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi Kalan uses simple Punjabi.
    • Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.
