PM Manmohan Singh and Parliament to hold vigil

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the first Sikh prime minister of India, the largest democracy in the world, has decided to take a bold step in reforming the young nation's attitude towards communal violence and hatred. After much criticism from the Sikh community in India as well as abroad, Manmohan Singh has silenced all critics by declaring November 1st a national day of respect and honor for the victims of the 1984 Delhi pogroms. The events of this period have long been termed as "the 1984 anti-Sikh riots." However, government officials have stated that riots involve violence by unruly mobs, and in this event the mobs were only on one side and the violence was one sided as well. A well orchestrated and planned murder of fellow Indian citizens has been accepted by the Indian Parliament as the 1984 Anti-Sikh Pogrom.

Remarkably, this bold step by PM Singh has received the support of all political parties and circles. It was a surprise to many that the Congress party in particular would encourage or endorse such a bold move by Singh. Speaking to reporters, Singh proclaimed, "The Sikhs have shed there blood for this country's freedom. The Sikhs of India deserve respect and honor. The events of 1984 were not only an insult to the great Sikhs of our nation, but to all human beings with a conscience." Singh went on to state that he was impressed by the strong backing of the majority Hindu community who have felt that such a step is necessary to heal the wounds of thousands of Sikhs who feel betrayed by the very nation they sacrificed for.

The national holiday is to be called "Sharam Din" or "Day of Shame." Parliament has already voted and approved the national holiday without any debate or controversy. On November 1st, all government buildings, offices, banks, and schools will be closed in honor of the 1984 victims. The PM has invited over 1000 relatives of the pogrom to participate in a candle light vigil at the Indian Parliament. Similar vigils are planned throughout India in an effort to heal the wounds of the past, which have never been addressed on a national level. PM Singh stated that this vigil would be an annual event, regardless of what party or government is in power.

Speaking with representatives of the Sikh community, they stated that finally after many years, they feel India is their homeland.
