Sikhs Protesting over Racist Attack

The Sikh community from across Great Britain is set to take part in a large 'Prayer Vigil for Peace, Respect and Tolerance' on Sunday 19th November from 2-4pm. This will take part in Pilrig Park, off Leith Walk, Edinburgh.

The Sikh community will first congregate at the meeting point of Guru Nanak Gurdwara, 1 Sheriff Brae Leith, Edinburgh, EH6 6TJ at 12-1pm before proceeding to gather at Pilrig Park for 2pm.

Everybody will be welcome to join in the vigil to send a message out that we cannot let intolerance win when there is so much positive good to bring society together.

A police text message service and e-mail address has also been launched in a bid to catch youths who hacked a Sikh teenager's hair off in Edinburgh.

Prayers will be performed for the betterment and welfare of the whole of society.

The racial attack on a 15-year-old by four white youths on Tuesday evening was described by police as a sustained and unprovoked assault.

The youngster was subjected to a tirade of racial abuse in the city's Pilrig Park before being kicked to the ground.

When the victim's turban came loose, the youths cut his hair off.

Hair is a religious symbol for Sikhs, and it is strictly against the religion to have it cut.

Bhai Amrik Singh, chair of the Sikh Federation, said: "This is an insulting action which is deeply offensive to Sikhs because of the religious importance of their hair and is being treated with the utmost seriousness."

Nina Giles, director of the Edinburgh and Lothians Racial Equality Council, said: "This was a mindless attack. It's appalling; knowing how sensitive Sikhs are about their hair."

The apex body of Sikh politico-religious affairs condemned the shearing of hair of an Edinburgh-based Sikh teenager by a group of white youths and called upon the British government to take urgent steps to prevent such incidents. Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar said the assault was "nothing less than an act of terrorism which must be universally condemned".

In a statement here, Makkar said the incident was "part of a disturbing rise in crimes against the Sikh people in Europe and other western nations".

Dal Khalsa International, have also condemned the incident. The organisation's general secretary Kanwarpal Singh Bittoo said this was "yet another in a series of outrages targeting Sikhs after 9/11".

Both Makkar and Bittoo called on Britain to ensure "exemplary punishments for the culprits to discourage future incidents".

A police spokeswoman said: "The youths responsible for the attack were all believed to be aged 16 so it is possible they attend one of the high schools in the Pilrig area.

"Someone knows who these people are, and we would urge anyone who recognises them, to come forward."
