Protests for Paramjit Singh Dhaddi's Release

The family of Paramjit Singh Dhaddi spoke to SikhSangat News about their reaction to the events unfolding in Punjab.

'My mother came back from India and I was very saddened to hear of how my father explained how the Police stripped him naked, took away his five Kakaars (articles of the Sikh faith) from him, leaving him to sit in the cold. Then they began torturing him.

My father was tortured all through the night on Saturday before he was presented in court. He was told by the police that if he mentioned the torture he would get more. However, my father still told the media that he was being tortured and that he was being forced to sign the confession statement.'

Amolak Singh, too stated to the media that he had been tortured during interrogation. He stated the police told him to sign the confession statement and that Paramjit Singh had admitted his crime and that he should too.

UK citizen Paramjit Singh Dhaddi, Amolak Singh and Jaswinder Singh were produced in a city court late on Thursday which decided to extend their remand. The police claimed that another alleged 'accomplice' by the name of Balbir Singh Tahli was still at large.

The trio had been handcuffed — against the Supreme Court’s guidelines on the matter. Supporters of the three around the court premises protested and shouted slogans of 'Raj Karega Khalsa' when they were brought to the court.

Meanwhile protests also occurred in the Gakhal village where the village protested against Wednesday's police visit to a spot near Paramjit Singh Dhaddi’s tubewell which has been on contract for the last eight years with a resident, Mandip Singh. The villagers state that the police created a hole in a small mound of hay near the tubewell.

Notably, it was another tubewell that the police had told earlier as where 11-kg RDX allegedly hidden by the arrested men had been recovered from.

Villagers in Gakhal said that the police visited the village on Wednesday 27th December and went to the tubewell (given on contract by Dhaddi) where a small mound of hay stood. Kuldip Singh, a villager, informed that he saw that around 7:30 pm two policemen on a two-wheeler went to the village and to the tubewell which Mandip Singh looked after.

Paras, a migrant labourer who was present near the tubewell, informed that the two policemen brought out some fodder from the mound of hay from one side and made a small hole in it.

When the local media and journalists visited the place, they found that a small mound stood in the position it had been before and at one corner a small hole had been made which appeared too small to keep 11-kg RDX, two hand grenades, six detonators, seven timer devices, a pistol, fifty cartridges, two magazines, 10 metres of wire, one battery and one walkie-talkie set which the police had claimed to have recovered from a kupp (mound of hay) near Dhaddi’s tubewell in his native village, Gakhal. Even if the police had recovered the arms from the mound, how did they know that they were lying exactly at the spot where the hole was — even if it had been created earlier — is just one of the several major unanswered questions in the entire episode.

The Police conducted no tests on the substance and immediately declared it as RDX. Also, the fodder taken out of the mound looked fresh and not six days old.

As protests occurred outside the court and in the village, Lawyers For Human Rights International, Khalsa Human Rights and other Human Rights Organisations are stating basic human rights of the trio have been contravened.

Akali Dal (1920) president Ravinder Singh demanded a judicial probe into the matter by a High Court judge. Meanwhile, the Dal Khalsa said there was more to it than met the eye. Dal Khalsa leaders H S Dhami and Kanwarpal Singh said the police theory seemed to be concocted and unconvincing. They said a high-level judicial probe was needed to bring out the truth.

Not too sure whether this decision was appealed although I seem to recall his daughter, a Birmingham based solicitor, was attempting to lobby political support in the U.K at the time.

These Singh all have DDT links, so why has the DDT done nothing for them. I remember the 1980s when Singh used to be arrested on false charges, Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji used to give ultimatum to the corrupt police to release them. Now the DDT Mukhi has meetings with Sukhbir BAdal yet fails to get these Singh released. I can see why people do not accept the current Jathdar of the DDT now.

It's coming up to 2 years, are we gonna have to wait 5 years like we did for Balbir Singh Bains's case?

What are we supposed to do from the UK. The Indians donot care two monkeys about letters from MP in the UK.

The current mukhi of the DDT could do a lot especially when he holds those closed door meetings with Sukhbir Badal. So please can our DDT friends ask the Jathedar what he is doing to free these Singh. Again I would like to remind the sangat what Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji used to do when Gurmukhs were wrongly arrested.

You can't compare this case with Balbir Singh's...totally different circumstances. The only way is through appeal or to prove to the British Govt that Dhadi has been framed after which they can put on political pressure for his release.

Dhumma is a joke, you can't expect anything from him nor compare him to the likes of Sant Jarnail Singh.
