Without Naam nothing can be understood. Guru ji always say Naam Jaap, if your a mona or a Amritderhi.

Guru Granth Sahib is not a rule book. But Guru Ji trys to make you think by looking inside yourself. When you hear a Shabad/Bani from Guru Granth Sahib, you are listening to him talking to you.

Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!

It doesn't really contradict itself. The problem is, most people look at each quote in isolation: or just the one line, or the part of the one line that supports their thoughts.

If you look at the entire paragraph (pauree), or sometimes the entire page, then you can make more sense of what is being said. Sometimes the meat quotes are not being said in reference to the meat issue, they are being said in relation to other things like people who claim that they are holy because they do this or that.

Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa!

Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!

Please Read Guru Granth Sahib ji yourself and decide. Guru Ji is personal to all of us, so dont depend on *someone's* interpretation of gurbani - ie: translations. Contemplate on them yourself and find out what Guru ji is saying to YOU.

As Rupz very rightly said, Guru ji isnt a book of rules. We got Rehitnamas for that :D

it is very hard to understand Gurbani and many people interpretate it differently.

the Guru is the truth and there is not even an ioto of a mistake in it. it is just 'perfect' , the Shabad is the word of God so you asking that question shows that your faith is not all with the Guru or the people who make the statement.

we are told not to argue over it, but there is so much said before that in the Guru Granth sahib Ji which has to be taken into account.

we shouldnt argue but one important thing to note is that you will find the true sikh wont eat meat, it isnt good for the body. actually alot of things we eat arent good for us but we dont realise it because havent followed what the guru says, we pick out the bits we want and all that but until we practice and then receive the kirpa we will find it difficult, a simple diet is the ideal one, as you will find many Gursikhs who reached higher spiritual levels ate very simple food, but you will get people saying what about protien, how did they manage to fight in battles on simple diets and all those questions, but they dont understand that if you have faith in the Guru and have the love for Akaal Purakh things beyond our imagination are possible. food is needed only for the body, the atma does not need anyfood except for the Naam.

the simple answer is that Gurbani does not contradict it self.

If you attempt to derive meaning in isolation, day contradicts night. If you consider it as a whole, day compliments night.
