Londonjatt, because it's simple, easier and quicker.

Once you feel you're developing and feel that you're ready to take the next step you can pick up the Taus if that's what you want to do.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with starting with the vaja. Especially considering only a few of the Gurbani raags need to be understood and contemplated at "shrutti-level" :)

Though your goal should, ideally, be beyond the vaja :)

would it be acceptable then to pick up guitar instead, I don't understand why I should start with an austrian instrument?

Why not? By all means, if you feel that you would be more comfortable with the guitar, why not start with it?

The Astruain instrument happens to be quite common, since more Punjabis (ironic isn't it? Punjabis playing Austrian instruments...) know the vaja, and can teach the saregama on the vaja, it's a lot easier, practicly...But if your next Punjabi plays good Violin (which there are) who is ready to teach you, or guitar, I don't see why not.

Anyway, We just ruined this thread.....

lol hahaa

nah but seriously, from my limited knowledge I gained from Raj Academy, string instrument is more suitable for learning raag and just helping your voice. So violin I guess would be ok, duno about guitar, but vaja, vaja is juist tapping the keys which is not very flowing, not flowing at all....
