*Yawns* Hindu scriptures say that the ShivaLinga was the divine pillar of light (or fire) to which Shiva initially appeared as to his devotees (and Brahma and Vishnu in Shaivaite texts), not a phallus. Like I mentioned earlier, the earliest lingas found, were pillar shaped, and only remotely phallus like in appearance.

Edit: Now then, on the subject of bearded depictions of Shiva- http://img480.imageshack.us/img480/9613/shivabeardzz6.jpg

Shivlingem is Shivas private part, and Shiva can't deny that, just go read your 'holy texts',they are full of sexual acts with animals and so on,look at your temples homo=erotic statues, and so on.Singhavelli you being form Canada probably come across the likes of me everyday,so don't know why your crying.Your on about Bhindranwale, yes he was for peace,we all was for peace, but then the Hindus attacked!

And Bhindranwale said that no Chali Ram should be left in Panjab after the day an attack happens,Guru Gobind Singh Ji,denounced the Hindu texts, rejected them.Hinduism or its values, culture, have no place in Sikhism, Socially they can't as they have the caste system, If your not a Brahmin you can't worship god even,Hinduism is in favour of the brahmin and no other - just remember that, scheming gangu brahmins, chandus,Pahari Rajeh,Dogras,Gandhis, list is endless....................

For those who doubt me on Hindu Texts search this on youtube 'Hindu Bagwan (god)'

is there any more information on the first image with what seems to bee a primative khanda behind the statue

Dear Kam

Ooh that's a tricky one !

There is some debate as to whether the symbol is a trident or a Shivling and Chand - but in essence I believe they are the same thing

The trident has a deep significance

"The trident, Shiva's prime attribute, serves his as a weapon in feats of cosmic destruction, but, in addition, it is invested with deep philosophical meaning. It is this layer of meaning that led to the production of tridents and to the ritual of ayudha puja or weapon worship that is a regular feature of temple rites. A variety of Shaiva texts instruct worshipers to think of the trident and other ayudhas not as everyday tools of violence but rather as weapons of grace, whereby, Shiva destroys the bonds that ensnare the human soul. For instance, the text of the eleventh century Kamika Agama states that the trident's three prongs stand for the three gunas, or qualities, of purity (sattva), activity (rajas) and lethargy (tamas)."

*from the Sensuous and the Sacred, Chola bronzes of South India

If we take Nihang oral traditon they argue that the Chand they wear on their Dumala is the chand and shivling - as they are -'Shiv-Swaroop' (the very form of Shiva) and the Farla represents the 'ganga' - in their words they are the image of Maha kaal (Death) - having conquered Death itself - as they are protected by that which is greater than Maha Kaal

I am not very well versed in Nihang Oral History - SS member 'Gurbar Akal' is probably the best man to ask

This does upset some people - but as Nihangs tend to be the only ones who wear the Chand - they have their traditions and history which should be respected.

It is argued by some that the Chand on dumalla came into vogue after Nihangs went/were forced to South India - and somehow picked up on local customs and 'Devi worship' and the 'Real' symbol is the Chakar bhagauti - which then became the modern day 'Khanda'

All that can be said with some certainty is that the Chand is an ancient symbol - used by many warriors

hope that is of some help

This is not HinduSangat.Com, you want to discuss Hindu gods you can do that somewhere else,

Just type shivlingam in google and you will see what it is

The name Sikhsangat.com doesnt mean that Sikhi is the only philosophy that must be discussed here. One can talk about other religions on the forum providing the rules about such discussions are followed and the theme of the forum is not effected by the discussion. By the theme i mean, if a new user was to come to the forum they will not think, jeez these guys discuss islam/hinduism more than sikhi. So sikhi first and any other religions.

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
