Mr Ambani is one of India's most powerful businessmen

Police in India have registered a criminal case against a leading businessman for allegedly circulating a joke insulting the Sikh community.

Anil Ambani was charged by the police in northern Uttar Pradesh state with "insulting a religion or faith".

Mr Ambani is one of India's most powerful businessmen.

A local Sikh leader had filed a complaint against Mr Ambani after his mobile telephone network allegedly circulated a joke about Sikhs.

Mr Rajendra Singh Bagga said in his complaint that the joke was being circulated by text on Mr Ambani's mobile telephone network, Reliance Communications.

"We are a martial race. We fought for defending Hinduism and this joke is very insulting," Mr Bagga said.

'Disgusting'

A police official told the BBC that insulting a religion or faith could carry a punishment of three years in prison or a fine, if proved.

Earlier, members of the Sikh community in the city of Meerut held protests against the network allegedly circulating the joke.

Reports said that the joke had been sourced from a website well known for its collection of jokes around the Sikh community.

Community leaders say that Mr Ambani should apologise for circulating a "disgusting" joke.

But many others say that the registration of a criminal case against the businessman could have a political dimension.

Anil Ambani is known to be close to the opposition Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, while the complainant Mr Bagga is known to be close to the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief minister, Ms Mayawati.

After coming to power this summer, Ms Mayawati's government swiftly cast doubt over the future of a special economic zone Anil Ambani is planning in the state.

Mr Ambani's Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group is among India's top three private business houses with interests in communications, financial services, electricity, infrastructure and entertainment.

Dont know what political motive there is .

But it's good to know that the whole Sikh community including SGPC and DSGMC are united on this issue against anti Sikh jokes.

Just now both Makkar and Sarna have criticised Reliance and given full support to R.S.Bagga on zee punjabi news .

Soon a movie called "Singh is King" is to be released. This movie again shows Sikhs and Sikhi swaroop in bad light .

Sikhs should protest against this movie unitedly from day one itself so that a strong and clear message is sent out to the film and news media that we will not allow them to mess with us.

^In regards to that film - it's disgraceful - Boycott and Protest - that's the only way to do it

But then to be fair - Sikhs these days arent exactly giving people a different message are they?

Half the people that know anything about Sikhs in my area; put us all in the 'get drunk, eat loads, balle balle' banner - Sikhi and Punjabi has no line to them.

What is the difference between a Sardar (Sikh) and a donkey? Answer: a tail.

^^hmm.. That is not even funny and they call it a joke?? blink.gif Didn't know people had such weak sense of humor.

Anyways, after reading it the only thing that came to my mind was the story posted by LotLS. Here >> http://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?showtopic=32619

I say we set these santabanta.com guys straight. How can that be done??

Even though you're just joking Babbar Shere, it's a very bad and inappropriate joke. Violence is NOT the solution to this problem. Even joking about it is inappropriate and reflects badly on you, this site and potentially the entire community.

You are right paji, but sometimes that option works best.

fighting solves nothing, but its when you have to fight in order to get the job done, thats where the "sipahi" aspect comes into play, but all the other times, yea , we should stay true to the "sant" side.

Sardarji jokes are as commonplace in India as blonde jokes in Britain, playing on the Sikh stereotype for dimwittedness because of their burly physique and reputation for making good soldiers and poor intellectuals.

The Prime Minister of India, a Sikh, is the most educated head of state in the world right now. Poor intellectuals?

    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
