I watched the program, the first 10 mins anyway, had to put the kids to bed but it seems these are tumors all over his body. He is currently undergoing operations to remove these tumors and will need many more operations.

The growths on his legs and arms are like tree branches and if left untreated would have covered his whole body eventually killing him.
