MADURAI: Nearly 2,000 Tamil civilians were killed in the attacks, including aerial bombings, carried out by the Sri Lankan army during the last 15 hours in places like Mullaivaikkal, Otraipanaiyadi, Valaiyargund and Irattaivaikkal, alleged P Nedumaran, president, Tamil Nationalist Movement, here on Sunday. There were bodies everywhere, he said, and added that 1.5 lakh Tamil civilians were trapped in the war zone without food or medicine. He wanted the United Nations to intervene to feed those people and see to it that their medical needs were met.Nedumaran said: "Though Union Home Minister P Chidambaram keeps on saying that ceasefire is in place in Lanka, according to the Lankan military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, the war had not ended but only heavy weapons were restrained from being used." On India's arms aid, he charged that Lanka had acknowledged receiving weapons and training from India, Pakistan and China and it gave them a winning edge over the LTTE. He said that Nanayakkara had lauded the efforts of India in sharing crucial information about LTTE.According to Nedumaran, AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa might be right as Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had not refuted the charge of holding secret dialogues with Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, before staging a fast, recently. He said that LTTE chief Prabhakaran would not flee the country at any cost, but the war will get intensified soon with guerilla warfare in which LTTE would have an upper hand. Flaying DMK's atrocities, Nedumaran said the government was acting in favour of CM's son M K Azhagiri, DMK candidate for Madurai. He condemned the attack on the cadre of opposition alliance by the DMK functionaries and alleged that DMK had been bribing voters and threatening the public to vote for Azhagiri.

'Jaya's call for Eelam a poll gimmick'Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President K V Thangkabalu on Sunday described AIADMK chief Jayalalitha's call for a separate Eelam as an election gimmick. He told reporters here that only a month ago Jayalalitha had said that deaths of innocent civilians were inevitable in the war between the Sri Lankan army and the LTTE. Her new stand on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue was apparently with an eye on the Lok Saba elections. Her separate Eelam call was purely politically motivated, Thangkabalu asserted. He said the Congress on the other hand was a party that had made the highest sacrifice for the Sri Lankan Tamils - the price was paid with Rajiv Gandhi's life.

i wonder where our activist friend and all the other professional protesters are who were so prominent when the Gaza was being bombed? It looks like the Tamils are being massacred is much larger number than the number of Palestinians and yet apart from the Tamils themselves no one else has taken much notice.

Heh, I was wondering the same.

I suppose the truth of the matter is that defending Tamils is not fashionable, probably because they are not being "oppressed" by Evil White Capitalists or Jews.

K.

palestinians, tamils, chechans, tibetans, whatever. we cant help our own lot and if the shoe was on the other foot these people are just as bad as the people who oppress them. who helped or sympathised with us in our first war of independence in the 80s and 90s? no one. maybe if we had oil some might have come. let them get on with it and dont be so easily distracted. they only help those who have something that benefits them. and god only helps those who help themselves.

we should think like that bro, guru tegh bahadur ji stood up and gave his life for the freedom of the brahmins. the least we can do is make some noise about the oppressions, otherwise whats the point of calling ourselves sons and daughters of guru gobind singh ji.

My comment was aimed that those who use the Shaheedi of Guru Tegh Bahadur for the Tilak and Janau of the Hindus in order to join pro-Palestinians protests and cry loudly against Israel but yet do not seem bothered about what happens to the Tamils. I was just noting the hypocrisy of some.

Its all about power. Anyone in power these days in kaljug will be an oppressor. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or whoever it is, power freaks will wreck havoc on whoever they deem as a "problem".

some people here are so blinded by hate that finding a way out not going to be an easy task

i know, but dont worry, those terrible tamils are being taught a lesson that will hopefully make it easier for them to find a way to stop hating the sinhalese in their country.

guru tegh bahadur ji sacrificed his life to stop people being converted. the muslim rulers were forcing the non-muslims into islam. it wasnt about hating one religion in particular, it was about allowing kasmiri hindus to practice their religion. the hindu kashmiris were doing nothing to fight back - it was not a war.

in sri lanka are people being killed for not becoming buddhists..........are palestinians being killed for not converting to judaism (actually there are many muslims who live peaceful lives in israel)..............are chechens killed for not converting to christianity.............................? NO! wake up man! its a war...... an uneven one, yes but we sikhs have fought on both sides in these types of war too. read a little history - do you know of the plight of chechens under stalin or buddhists in india etc etc? if you want to moan about what happens in order to satisfy your soul and conscience that you are doing something then go ahead. just dont start saying 'your bad if you dont care/agree with what i believe in'.
