Will curb anti-India protests, UK assures Krishna

In the backdrop of recent instances of pro-Khalistan demonstrations in the UK, British Foreign Secretary William Hague is learnt to have assured India that they will curb “anti-India demonstrations”.

Sources said Hague assured External Affairs Minister S M Krishna in a bilateral meeting in London on Thursday that “UK is sensitive to India’s core concerns and it will look into anti-India activities in the country and anti-India demonstrations will be curbed”.

With Somalian piracy bothering the UK and India alike, sources said Britain has proposed “delegation-level consultations on increasing presence of naval forces and anti-piracy issues”. New Delhi has said it will discuss the proposal separately. Krishna has reiterated that India has committed its full support to international anti-piracy efforts.

During the talks at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office on Thursday, Hague pitched for Britain’s partnership with India in the 0education sector in a big way. Britain, sources said, is keen to establish universities in India and wants to collaborate in this regard. Hague informed the Indian delegation, led by Krishna, who is accompanied by Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, that major changes in the student visa system are in the offing, which will come into effect from August this year.

Indian officials said the new system will help students, as entry will be allowed only to students who can speak in English. The UK border agency will refuse entry to students who cannot speak English and need an interpreter. This rule will be effective from August onwards. This is expected to put India — with a large population of youth well-versed in English — at an advantageous position, ahead of other Asian countries.

The delegations spoke about substantial progress made in the year since PM David Cameron’s visit to India and looked forward to the tasks for the year ahead. The delegations discussed a wide range of foreign policy matters, including UN Security Council reforms.

Well this is a worrying development. It shows the Hindustani government keep their noses firmly in the business of the Sikhs in the UK. It also means Sikhs need to be aware of a what sounds like a crackdown on Never Forget 1984 Rallies. Time to build up pressure on the Government. JagtarSinghKhalsa Ji, do you have any more information on what Hague said?

We are challenging Hague - either they need to say Indian Express is lying or if any truth in the report we will be challenging Hague in UK Parliament through Parliamentary Questions.

If true, the UK Government will never admit it. This is why it is important we expose what happens behind closed doors. The Indian govt banned Sikh organisations 10 years ago in the UK (then Canada 2 years later), but we have grown stronger (and better) in the way we operate. The Indian authorities find it easier to counter an armed struggle, but have no answer to a political freedom movement that is growing in strength with the support of the Sikh media and like-minded Sikhs across the globe are working closer together.

Dear _____________________

Recently 50,000 Sikhs from all over the UK gathered in Hyde Park London to express their democratic right to protest against the injustices and genocide committed by the Government of India for the indiscriminate murders of thousands of innocent Sikhs during 1984. This act of genocide clearly endorsed by Congress hired mobs, murdered and raped Sikh civilians, to the extent of torture via means of placing tyres around the necks/arms of Sikh men and youths, dousing them with petrol and setting them alight. Punjab police during the period indiscriminately picked up thousands upon thousands of innocent Sikh men and youths on the pretence of them being “terrorists” and killed them in fake encounters. To this day not a single politician, policeman or individual has been brought to justice. Yet India still kids itself to believe it is the world’s biggest democracy.

This past Thursday British Foreign Secretary Rt Hon. William Hague held a bilateral meeting in London with Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna. According to the Indian Express (Indian News website) it is reported that Mr Hague has assured S M Krishna that “the UK is sensitive to India’s core concerns and it will look into anti-India activities in the country and anti-India demonstrations will be curbed”.

It is most woeful that the UK has given assurance to stop democratic protests which the Sikh Diaspora holds on various occasions. It is the universally recognised right of people to raise their concern via peaceful means. Does the UK, by giving such assurance, want to snatch this right of the British Sikh people?

Britain is seen as a world leader in setting the precedent for democracy and freedom of speech. Let us not look much further than our involvement in the Libyan crisis, where our forces set out to free the Libyan people of a tyrant and establish democracy. By silencing the voice of the Sikhs, and taking away our democratic right to protest, will our efforts in Libya and across the world in other countries in political turmoil not seem hypocritical?

The Sikhs have been asking for justice from the Government of India for over 27 years, and it falls of deaf ears. If Britain cannot help the Sikhs in this matter then the least Britain can do is not rub salt into wounds, which Mr Hague has openly done.

Mr Hague has truly demonstrated that he is indeed a son of Thatcher as giving reckless assurances for the silencing of political protest can only arise from deep rooted Thatcherism.

I would be most grateful if you could raise this issue with Mr Hague and ask him to give clarity. His assurances have deeply harmed the sentiments of British Sikhs and most importantly the very principles of this country, democracy, fighting injustice and free speech.

Yours Sincerely,
