Present brother...present...but don't re-present....speak from your own heart and kamai..that will stick to a person like flies on a fresh pile of you know what...the saints spent there whole life telling us to search....but all we do is search there katha...no.no...he is saying search your soul...don't just search the bowl.......ole bowl search your soul.............then you won't have to pay the toll......and you can roll................

Bowl = someone else's kamai/understanding, don't make this your understanding without searching first.Bani says search your soul, make your bibek budhi come alive.

Toll = paying the dues of one deed's/jamdoot/re birth

Roll = liberation and contentment/complete surrender

Singh, first what i have learned from Saints is that i need to know how to search my soul. Satguru Sri Guru Gobind SIngh Sahib ji Maharaj gave the teachings of Gurbani to the Saints like Baba Deep Singh ji, and Bhai Mani SIngh ji and they learned how to search the soul. Such Saints taught the Guru's katha of Shabad Guru to other Singhs, so they can start searching the soul and continued the school that taught others how to search. Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj has told us Sikhs to go to the Saints and learn how to search. Sant Baba Gurbachan Singh ji Maharaj is that Saint and listening to him do katha clears up many questions I have about shabads. If i didn't listen to the Katha that Sant ji did, then i would be lost today just like Dr. I.J. Singh. I bring up Dr. I.J. Singh up here because if you read his articles, he has completely missed the mark on what Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj teaches us. But look how he seems to be educated on many topics. I have no hate for him, but many Sikhs look up to him and are influenced in the same way. Hence, we have the new generation of Sikhs with atheist beliefs. Dr. I.J. Singh is not the only one who writes in an atheist way, there are many other like him with phd's. Dr. I.J. Singh read Gurbani without a proper teacher or no teacher to teach him the meanings of the Shabads. So he uses his intellect to intrepret the shabad and he fails miserably to understand it. I look at the state of such people and know i need a proper teacher to teach me the proper intrepretation of Gurbani.

The mind is foolish and makes the person foolish. Ask yourself why has there been many new groups created today among Sikhs. No one took the time to listen to the Saints and everyone said i am the Saint. In Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji Maharaj has told us such thing will take place; Kalki Avatar. With Satguru's kirpa, I have been made aware of such tricks of Yama (Lord of death) and focus on listening to the Brahmin (Saint (person who knows what Satguru is saying) of Satguru Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj) to learn how to search the soul.

FOUL LANGUAGE - READ ON - AND ABSORB - in your life:

It is Guru Sahib’s Hukam to stay quiet if speaking would result in a defeat.

A very funny Punjabi folk tale has come to mind. There was once a traveller who arrived at a village on his way. He was very hungry and knocked at a door. An old woman opened the door and he requested her, “O Mayee, I am a traveller and very hungry; could you please cook these rice for me?

The good old lady without hesitation welcomed him in and placed his rice in a pateela with water to boil. The traveller had a bad habit of talking too much and when he did not have anything meaningful to say, he talked nonsense. He sat quietly for a short while but the silence was killing him. He started the conversation as follows:

“Mayee, I notice that the main door of your house is kind of narrow and your buffalo is quite big. I am wondering, how would you get the dead body of the buffalo out, in case she died.”

People who have rural background know that cows and buffaloes are the most prized possessions of people from villages. The old lady was naturally very perturbed and irritatingly replied, “Son say good and don’t speak evil. Why should my buffalo die?”

There was some silence for some time and now again the traveller could no longer restrain himself. He asked the old lady, “Mayee, where is your husband? I don’t see him anywhere.”

The old lady sadly replied, “son he died a short while ago.”

The stupid traveller jokingly said, “it is good that the old man died; otherwise he would have given you hard time” (ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਮਰ ਗਿਆ। This traveller said so because he had always seen his father and mother fighting and thought that all couples fought like that.

Naturally, the old lady was very disturbed but she kept quiet. With difficulty she controlled her anger. Because of anger, she started stirring rice vigorously but the stupid traveller still did not get the message.

After a short while he again asked the old lady, “Mayee, don’t you have any children?”

“Of course I do. My son has gone to a far off land on a business trip. He will be coming soon.”

``Mayee, what would happen if your son died in foreign land? What would become of you?”

This was too much for the old lady to take. She took hold of the utensil with half cooked rice and poured it in his palla (a piece of cloth like hazooria, around the neck) and ordered him to get out of her house.

While he was walking on the street, water from half-cooked rice was dripping down. Someone asked him what was it that was dripping down his palla. The traveller replied saying that it was the Rass of his tongue that he failed to control, that was dripping down.

The moral of the story is to speak good and speak after thinking.

Gurbani has several references about thinking before speaking. It is Gurbani Hukam to speak good as opposed to speaking bad.

Where ever a Gursikh goes, he says only good and by effort he japps Naam and drinks Amrit.

Dont create a conflict by calling anyone bad. In Siri Asa ki Vaar too there is a Hukam that instructs us to not call anyone bad.

Where ever a Gursikh goes, he says only good and in his Surthee he only writes Shabad i.e. his Surthee stays merged in Shabad.

These Hukams instruct us to not indulge ourselves in unnecessary conflicts by speaking rudely or by speaking such words that instigate conflict. This does not mean that a Sikh should be unconcerned about injustice or atrocities and should be quiet about them. Of course a Khalsa would speak up against injustice and would act to stop injustice. The above Hukams are relevant to everyday personal situations that prompt us to become bitter about others and slander others. So long as we don’t stop getting into conflicts, we would not be able to concentrate on Naam.

Below is a beautiful Kabit of Bhai Gurdaas jee on this topic:

1. So long as the arrow is in the bow, it is under control but once it leaves the bow, it no longer stays under control .

2. So long as a tiger is in cage, it is under control but once it leaves the cage it does not stay under control and does not reside in a domestic setting.

3. So long as the lamp (deeva) is in the house, it is not even noticeable from the outside but once this Deepak (lamp) lights a forest and becomes a form of forest fire, it cannot be hidden even if one tries to hide it.

4. So long as our thoughts remain within our mind or mouth, they are fine but once our thoughts come out in form of words, they cant be controlled, so speak after thinking, speak according to Gurmat and speak only good qualities (of others).

Giving many examples, Bhai Sahib Gurdaas jee has concluded that a Gursikh should speak after thinking, speak according to Gurmat i.e. speak sweetly and speak such thoughts that bring happiness for the speaker and the listener. A very good verse from Bhagat Kabir jees baani that is not in Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee and this Daas learned in school, goes as follows:

ਐਸੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਬੋਲੀਏ, ਮਨ ਕਾ ਆਪਾ ਖੋਏ। ਔਰਨ ਕੋ ਸ਼ੀਤਲ ਕਰੇ, ਆਪੋਂ ਸ਼ੀਤਲ ਹੋਏ।

It basically says that we should speak such speech that gives us peace and others peace as well.

Does Gurbani promote talking Rudely

Some Gursikh advocate speaking rudely based on couple of Pankitis from Gurbani. Presented below are the two pankitis that many individuals quote when justifying their rude speech:

About first pankiti they say that it means that even if Gursikhs speak rudely, still they are acceptable to Vaheguru. Second pankiti is interpreted as ones who are like silk from inside and like rough cotton from outside, are good people in this world i.e. ones who are sweet from inside and are rude from outside are good.

Now let`s do Vichaar of these Pankitis in the light of Gurmat:

ਜੇ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਭੁਲਿ ਚੁਕਿ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਭੀ ਖਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਣੇ ॥

The idea behind this Pankiti is that only Vaheguru and Guru Sahib are perfect. The Gurmukhs who have love from Naam, are very wise individuals but even if they unwittingly make a mistake while speaking, they are still acceptable to Vaheguru. Speaking Bhul Chuk should not be interpreted as speaking rudely. To speak rudely, one has to have some Krodh or Haume and these are the Vikaars that Gursikhs of high level don`t possess.

Being silk from inside and rough cotton from outside does not mean to be sweet from inside and rude from outside. Silk represents riches and rough cotton represents simplicity. This Pankiti actually means that Gurmukhs are rich (kings) from inside but outwardly they stay simple. A Gursikh is wise from inside but acts Bhola from outside. A Gursikh is strong from inside but acts humble from outside. This is what this pankiti actually means as opposed to being rude from outside and sweet from inside.

Gursikhs are sweeter than honey and they follow the Guru`s Hukam of sweet and good talk.

May we always speak according to Gurmat.

I am posting this because I'm so disappointed at how our youth doesn't think twice before using bad language.

Some highly abusive words have become a necessary part of each and every sentence coming out of some people's mouths. It is so annoying :( specially when such filthy words are uttered by someone who looks like a gursikh. When confronted, some people say they don't litterally mean it. I mean, why even say something filthy when you don't mean it? just because you think it is cool? skipping out some filthy words from your regular vocab won't make you uncool!!!!! and... it breaks my heart when i see a sikh saying bad words to another sikh.

My humble request to my Gursikh brothers and sisters is to refrain from the use of foul language.

gurU kw isK gMd-vwkI nw hovY

guroo kaa sikh ga(n)dhaavaakee naa hovai

The Sikh of the Guru should never speak disgusting speech.

Rehatnama Bhai Chaupaa Singh Jee

Sorry if I offended anyone.

VJKK VJKF!

This is totally true but it's just been a month since i've started progressing towards Sikhi with Vahegurus Kirpa and the first thing is no swearing or gossiping at all! Bad language is not needed there should be pyaar within Sikhs and everyone else. So glad to see this topic :)

my post under the Punjab elections was erased I take becaue I used the word B*astard and <banned word filter activated>. I would suggest you read gurbani and dasam bani very closely - there are many places where the right words to describe a person who is doing the wrong thing are used and some of those words are foul. Not a big deal - reality bites. The Guru's nor post Gursikhs were never politically correct, they said what it was...............maybe you need to re-look at your views...............

Great post- the reality is that we are all a bunch of bleeping bleeps that need to get off our lazy bleeps and discover what he wants us to discover instead of talking about it and reading the teachings over and over(gurbani) without applying it...

We are the worst of the worst, the <banned word filter activated> of the <banned word filter activated>-only the gurus and brahmgyanis are exempt from this(although even they were humble enough to call themselves the lowest types of creatures and the lowest of the low) if anyone doesn't agree that this is what we are, it's their ego disagreeing...

    • I was searching igurbani.com which gives correct pronunciation of Gurbani. I can’t remember all of it at once. I guess it relies on more practice, like more Sehaj Paths. The meaning becomes clearer. I have noticed slight variants in it. This could be because it’s written in old Punjabi.
    • Veer Manpreet Singh, a lay preacher, claims that -Sikhs aren't supposed to worship Guru Granth Sahib ji. -We are only supposed to worship God as is written in Guru Granth Sahib ji. -We only "revere" Guru Granth Sahib ji.     He says a lot of other things in this video, some are good refutations of Hindu superstitions, but the reformers often go too far. Anyways, what he is saying about not worshipping Guru Granth Sahib ji is totally wrong. The reason is Guru Granth Sahib ji is Guru. Guru is Satguru. Satguru is God. We worship God. Therefore, we also worship Satguru (Guru Granth Sahib ji).   There are innumerable verses in Gurbani equating God and Guru. The Guru is the Supreme Lord and the Transcendent Master. The Guru floats (saves) the drowning one. p49   ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ Know the Guru and God as One. p864   ਗੁਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਖੋਜਿ ਡਿਠਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੁ ॥ There is no one at par with the Guru. I have searched and seen the whole universe. p49 (If the Guru is the greatest in the whole universe, shouldn't we worship the Guru?)   I'd like to ask Manpreet Singh what is worship? Any reasonable definition would include obeisance, remembrance, and praise. Those are exactly the same things Gurbani says to do regarding Guru! Ever, ever, I think of the True Guru, and the Guru's feet I brush with my head's hair. p387   Praise: ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਆਪਿ ॥ The Guru himself is the transcendent Lord and the supreme master. Throughout the eight watches of the day, O Nanak meditate thou on the Guru. p387   In fact, Gurbani says the way to find God is to worship (puja) of Guru: ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਧੋਇ ਧੋਇ ਪੂਜਹੁ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਹੁ ਰੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Washing and bathing the True Guru's feet, worship thou them. In this way thou shall obtain my Lord Master. Pause. p1118   Could it be any clearer that we are to worship Guru ji?
    • Bro, reciting a shorter Chaupai Sahib is hardly "anti-Dasam". It's fine to argue that the longer Chaupai is more traditional, but the short one isn't anti-Dasam. That's like claiming shorter Rehras is anti-Guru Granth Sahib ji just because there are fewer selections from Guru Granth Sahib. It might not be traditional, but it's not anti-Guru Granth Sahib. I prefer the longer versions, but let's not exaggerate. Every tradition has a slightly different Rehras version. Nanaksar vs Taksal vs Nihangs and so on. The basic template for Rehras is at the beginning of Guru Granth Sahib ji. Later, Chaupai Sahib was added and Anand Sahib always follows as the end of a process. Then some sangats added more saloks to start Rehras and others were added at the end. Some additional selections from Dasam Bani were also added, but it wasn't the same ones for every sangat. The important thing is to not hate on each other for these variations.
    • Umm, so you're upset that this jatha did Chaupai the same way it's being done at Harimandar Sahib for 100 years? Shouldn't you be upset at the manager of Darbar Sahib? I'm not saying that Sikhs who are aware of certain issues shouldn't do the longer Chaupai, but there are only so many battles you can fight. Instead of calling some jatha traitors because they're doing the (for better or worse) "standard" Chauapai published by the SGPC, it would be better to change things from the central point. You can't fault the average Sikh for picking up the average Gutka and doing paath.
    • It's the same here in Toronto. Alot of the gudwaras here are political orientated and get tons of funding from the government-probably want them stay hush hush with all the BS that has been happening with India.  These guys are skewing gurbani. A complaint was sent to a ragi singh a couple of days ago in regards to a hukamnama.
